The following report summarizes this data at the state level for the Class of 1998 and includes analyses by racial/ethnic groups and gender. Comparison data from past years are also provided, as well as individual school and district data . It is important to note that the data represent the intentions of high school graduates and may not reflect what students actually do after graduating from high school. In 1998, a total of 50,452 students graduated from Massachusetts public high schools. Of these graduates, nearly 74 percent planned on attending college or some other post-secondary institution, almost 16 percent planned on working, and nearly three percent intended to enter the military (Figure 1 and Table 1). Of the graduates planning to attend college, nearly three times as many planned to attend a four-year college than planned to attend a two-year college (53 versus 19 percent of all graduates).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Massachusetts Military Reservation Master Plan Final Report Prepared in Conjunction with the Community Working Group by the Cape Cod Commission Fall 1998 Development of a New Master Plan Background A glance at almost any map of Cape Cod reveals a massive wooded area on the Upper Cape that is largely undeveloped, but fringed with highways, homes and other development. This area, known formally as the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), consists of approximately 20,000 acres, located in the upper Cape towns of Sandwich, Bourne, Mashpee and Falmouth. Home to the Army and Air National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, and a number of other agencies, the MMR has been used for over a half century for a variety of military training activities. In recent years the MMR has become widely known for its groundwater contamination problems. It was declared a Superfund site in 1989. Perhaps less well known is its recognition by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage Program as one of the most ecologically significant areas in the northeastern United States. Future uses of the MMR both military and civilian are of great interest to Cape Codders. Decisions about the fate of this area will have a tremendous impact not only on the four communities in which the MMR lies, but on Cape Cod as a whole.

Schools that refuse to comply face losing federal education funding under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. We opposed it primarily on privacy grounds, that students or parents should be able to control access to directory information, such as names, addresses, ages. That information shouldn't be sent out to military recruiters unless parents want it sent out. Rather, her daughter and other pupils are filed into an auditorium to hear a speaker liken the U.S. military to terrorists. For years the Newton, Mass., public schools have blithely violated a Massachusetts law that the flag be on display in every classroom. On the other hand, there are many flags on display if you count rainbow flags that symbolize a "gay-friendly" environment. When Clossey enrolled her son in Newton North High School's reading program little did she know that the teacher had bragged in the Boston Globe (July 8, 2001) of quietly introducing homosexual and transsexual subjects into his classes. The teacher, Michael Kozuch, handed out The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky with instructions to write an essay on it. What literary "treats" did Kozuch consider mandatory for other people's children? Sex between a boy and a dog, man-boy sex, anal sex between boys, male masturbation and female masturbation with a hot dog. By chance Clossey opened the book her son brought home. But what came after that shock was worse: She encountered public officials who saw protective parents as obstacles. Clossey called her mayor. He never called back. Calling school officials, she says she encountered "arrogant disrespect for parents." So she filed a criminal complaint against the teacher for corrupting a minor. Even Boston's hard-line pro-homosexuality newspapers and TV stations couldn't sit on this. But the complaint went nowhere. It emerged that Kozuch was not acting alone. The book was on a reading list given to every student. Urged by other furious parents, Clossey went to the local prosecutor. But the receptionist had been warned to expect her, according to Clossey. She waited and waited, but was not allowed to speak to her district attorney.

Report No. 12 of the Massachusetts School Board (1848) Horace Mann The European tradition of education centered in the family rather than in schools did not take root in the United States, because the pattern of the extended familyseveral generations living under one roofdisappeared on the frontier. As families moved to take advantage of free land, the old educational patterns broke down, and new forms were generated. As a result, Americans began to delegate more and more educational responsibility to the schools. The basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic were just the start; over the decades society has assigned many other skills previously learned in the homes to be taught in schools. But aside from teaching knowledge and skills, reformers saw the schools as the logical place to inculcate democratic idealism. In the 1820s universal education was an idea held by only a few visionaries; within a generation, a majority of the states had bought into this idea. Aside from abolition, no other reform movement of the Jacksonian era had such success, and the key figure was Horace Mann. Born in Massachusetts in a Calvinist small town, Mann (1796-1859) had little formal education as a youth, but read a lot at the town library, where he learned enough to be admitted to Brown University. After graduation in 1819 he taught for a while, studied law and then entered politics, where he soon became a rising star in the state assembly. Then in 1835, he shocked family and friends by taking the job of secretary to the Massachusetts Commission to Improve Education (later the State Board of Education), an agency with no money or control over local schools.
