In comparison with most states, Vermont is small in total area. Still, Vermont is the second largest state in New England after Maine, just a few hundred square miles larger than New Hampshire. The Green Mountain State is bordered by Canada, New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. It is 157.4 miles in length, 90.3 miles wide at the Canadian border*, and 41.6 miles along the Massachusetts border. The Connecticut River forms the eastern boundary, while the western boundary runs down the middle of Lake Champlain for more than half of its length. The state has 223 mountains over 2,000 feet in elevation. The mountainous areas of the state are primarily forested. In fact, although Vermont was virtually clear-cut of timber during the late 19th century, more than 75 percent of the state's total area is now forested. Beneath the mountains and rolling hills are the fertile valleys that support an extensive dairy industry.

M assachusetts has been at the forefront of American history for well over 250 years. The Pilgrims came ashore in 1620, and Massachusetts became the site of the first Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. In the 1700's, as the economy of the area benefited from abundant fishing, trading, and shipbuilding, the residents became increasingly rebellious against Britain's persistent taxation. In 1773, history was made when Bostonians had their famous Tea Party, boarding a British tea ship, and tossing the tea into Boston Harbor in protest of unfair taxation. As skirmishes with the British became earnest battles of the Revolution, the spirit of the patriots swept the countryside, and when the British were forced out of Boston in 1776, the Americans knew the tides were turning in their favor. M assachusetts gained statehood in 1788, and has sent three of her own and one adopted son to become President of the United States: John F. Kennedy, John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Calvin Coolidge. Though born in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1919-1921 and went on to be elected President of the United States in 1924. THE NAME: This state was named after the Massachusetts Indians that lived in the Massachusetts Bay Region. Massachusetts means "large hill place."

A New Place Abbey L., Stephen S., Johnny M., Peter W., Andrew G Deer drawing by Ryan D. New England was orginally high mountains and coastal plain areas. It was reshaped by glaciers during the Ice Age. Ice moved loose soil and rocks to the sea, making underwater banks that later brought millions of fish to the coast. When the glaciers melted, they formed lakes, ponds and streams. The first settlers found a rocky, woody wilderness with lots of wildlife and animals for hunting. There were lots of trees so they had plenty of wood to build with, but since the land was rocky and moutnainous, it was hard to find a place to build. The soil was very thin, so it was hard for the Pilgrims to plant their crops. They had plenty of fish though, from the rivers and streams. The coast of New England was rough and stormy, which made their winters were long and cold. The largest farming region in the area is called the Connecticut River Valley, but they farmed less than some of the other colonies because of weather, and many New England settlers became hunters and fishermen to live in the harsh climate. They also relied on trade to help survive. When the Pilgrims first came to America, they expected life like England. They expected roads and shops and houses and food to be already made for them. But they were wrong! They soon found out that had to do everything for themselves.
