http://www.wsc.mass.edu/garp/history/history.htm
HISTORY OF THE GEOGRAPHY AND REGIONAL PLANNING DEPARTMENT AT WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE The Geography and Regional Planning Department (GARP) started out as a Geography Department when Westfield State was incorporated as a normal school, or teachers’ training school, in 1839. Geography, during that period, was part of the social science curriculum, which played a role in training future teachers for elementary and secondary education programs. Particularly notable among the geography professors during this era was Dr. Will Seymour Monroe, who taught both geography and psychology at WSC from 1896 to 1904. Professor Monroe expanded the geography curriculum and later, after leaving WSC, became a noted author. After WWII, the number of students in geography courses increased along with the expansion of the number of education majors at WSC. Geography was still primarily a Social Science course supporting the education major, and the geography staff consisted of one or two faculty. However, with the addition of Professor J. E. O’Shea to the WSC staff in 1957, the geography department began to expand over the next few years. In the 1960s several professors joined the Geography Department and added their particular strengths to the curriculum.

high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. Kids on trial: 'justice by geography' Kris Axtman Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor - An 11-year-old is charged with stabbing a boy to death in Massachusetts and, if convicted, could serve a total of seven years in a juvenile jail. A 12-year-old is convicted of beating a girl to death in Florida and faces life without parole in an adult prison. These recent cases - and the states' high-contrast prosecution of them - illustrate just how splintered America's juvenile-justice system has become in recent years. While state-by-state variations have existed ever since the first court for young offenders was created in 1899, the discrepancies today are so wide that they are raising concerns about fairness. "One of the concerns we have is justice by geo-graphy - that young people accused of similar offenses are treated quite differently," says Mark Soler, president of the Youth Law Center, a public-interest law firm in Washington. "We expect some differences among the 50 states,... but the concern is that there are very large differences in sentencing, in racial disparity, in arrests, prosecutions, and incarcerations."
