Related Research Jobs and Economy Research Suburbs now contain the majority of office space in many of the country's top metropolitan office markets, according to this survey. Before 1980, central cities dominated the office market, but over the last two decades, office space has become much more dispersed. A new urban form, an "edgeless city," is emerging. Key Findings An analysis of the location of office space in 13 of the nation?s largest metropolitan commercial real estate markets between 1979 and 1999 found that:
  • tween 1979 and 1999, cities' share of metropolitan office space significantly diminished. 1979, 74 percent of office space was found in central cities and only 26 percent was found in sub-urbs. By 1999, the central city share of office space dropped to 58 percent while the suburban share grew to 42 percent.
  • tribution of urban and suburban office space varies greatly among metropolitan areas.

The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery

Note: Subscriptions to the FAS Drug Policy Analysis Bulletin may be requested by sending email to fas@fas.org , please be sure to reference the publication title More than 20 states have enacted special penalties for drug violations near schools, parks and other areas where children congregate. This legislation resonates powerfully with the concerns all parents have for their children, and has enormous political appeal. Unfortunately, most legislatures have given little thought to the problem of how best to design this kind of legislation to protect children. Results from our study suggest that the Massachusetts version of such a statute has not been successful in moving drug-dealing away from schools. The common denominator of these statutes is the enhancement of penalties for drug dealing based on geography. The physical layout of cities and towns in the state and the geographic patterns of drug dealing thus become important factors in determining the impact of the statute. Legislators have made gut judgments about how far they would like to see drug dealing retreat from places frequented by young people, but have rarely, if ever, benefited from data about the physical layout or distribution of dealing in their communities. In our recent Massachusetts study, we used a combination of aerial photography, municipal geographic information systems, commercial street mapping data and hand-held geographic positioning system (GPS) measurements to plot schools, parks and drug dealing incidents in three cities in Massachusetts. The research team started with case files from the local District Attorneys' offices. Based on the police reports in those files, the research team visited more than 400 drug- dealing locations and walked school boundaries with a handheld GPS. We triangulated between that field data and the other available electronic data to derive accurate maps of school zones and drug dealing locations.

Exploring the Beginnings of the American Revolution in Lexington, Massachusetts Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework December 2001 The Learning Standards describe the knowledge of history, geography, economics for civics that students are expected to acquire at a particular grade level. Examples of such knowledge are the location of the New England states, the meaning of the Declaration of Independence, the economic factors that drove exploration in the fifteenth century, or the causes of World War II. The Skills describe what students at a particular grade level should be able to do, such as reading the components of a map, interpreting information in a char, or writing a summary of a primary document. The sections make explicit connections to the Learning Standards for reading, writing, and research in the Massachusetts English Language Arts Curriculum Framework. New England and Massachusetts
