Towns and Cities:
    Amesbury
Just north of the Merrimack River , in Essex County , at the far north of Massachusetts.
      Amhurst
In Hampshire County, about 7 miles northeast of Northhampton . Birthplace of Silas Wright , prominent member of the Albany Regency in NY from the 1820s to the 1840s. Amhurst College was founded there in 1821 and incorporated in 1825.
      Andover
Small town around 25 miles north of Boston, in western Essex County , where a religiously conservative school was established in reaction against the liberalization of Harvard (which became a Unitarian institution early in the 19th century).
      Attleborough
      Beverly
      Boston
It it difficult, and will take quite some time, to do justice to Boston, of course. In the early 1800s, it was the intellectual capital of the U.S. It has one of the finest harbors on the east coast. Originally, it was almost an island, connected to the mainland by "Boston neck", a strip just wide enough for one road (one of the reasons it could hold out so long in its rebellion against the English). Over the years, the neck was widened until it became wider than the "head" attached to it. Part of this filling-in process created the Back Bay. See Whitehill, Boston, A Topographical History

high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Some of his ideas of what to include are listed below. Please add to it. What we are looking for is both student lessons and teacher resources to teach Mass geography. Before this idea was completed, Dick Aieta tragically died. But the work of sharing ideas goes on, as he would have wanted. Send back your ideas online to the Mass. Studies Project
