VITAL RECORDS AND LOCAL HISTORIES
Massachusetts vital records are maintained by the town or city, not by the county. Vital records going back to the 17th century are extant for many towns. Many of these records, especially from towns in the eastern part of the state, were published in the early 20th century. Look in the Newberry's card catalog under the name of the town as a subject heading to determine if such a publication is available for the town in which you are interested. Many original town records were also filmed by the Holbrook Research Institute in recent years and are available on microfiche. To determine if the Newberry has such a set for a particular town, check the computer catalog under the name of the town as a subject heading. Town histories can also be important sources for genealogical research. Again, check under the name of the town as a subject heading in both the

59. Massachusetts Vital Records From 1635 - 1841
This page explains alternatives available to massachusetts genealogy researchersto locate, research and order birth, marriage and death records occurring
http://www.mass-doc.com/vitals_before_1841.htm
Massachusetts Vital Records.
Birth, Marriage and Death.
"Massachusetts law requires town and city clerks to record all vital events occurring in that town or city."
This system has been in place for the last 300 odd years. Beginning in 1841 however, the state government required copies of each vital record be forwarded to a central state office. This means that basically, two sets of records exist for almost every birth, marriage and death since 1841. Prior to 1841, there was only one set of records. These vital records were generally maintained by a town or city clerk. Each town clerk recorded varying degrees of information as there was no state set wide standard. The result is a haphazard collection of vital records that can sometimes be extremely frustrating to find, read and or copy.
