Mt. Tom Academy Alternative High School at Holyoke Community College
Mission
The mission of MT TOM ACADEMY is to serve the students of the participating high schools who might benefit from an alternative, high school environment. The program offers instruction in high school and college subjects to students who have been unsuccessful in the traditional high school setting. The program will identify the strengths, talents and unique abilities of its participating students. Support will be provided to each individual student in an effort to develop a clear pathway to the completion of a high school diploma or a General Educational Diploma (G.E.D.). Success will be measured by the individual student’s acceptance into a college program or placement into an appropriate job setting.
Philosophy
All students can learn and should be given an opportunity to learn in a setting that focuses on their strengths. Students can succeed when learning takes place in an open and diverse environment that challenges them in a nonthreatening and supportive manner. Learning should proceed at a pace which is appropriate for the individual learner. Modern technological tools and methods of education will provide opportunities for remediation and individualized enrichment. Academic learning will be reinforced by real life work-based experiences.
Factors for Selection of Students
  • Have had unsuccessful experience in traditional high school setting.

Does 92.111 fulfill the new mathematics General Education requirement? Can 92.111 be used as a free elective for all students? ... Do credits earned in 92.127 count towards graduation?
  • Do students who currently take 92.11 (Math Perspectives) need to take both 92.111 and 92.151? NO... Most students will take only one of them, depending on the circumstances. Who should take the new 92.111 (Quantitative Reasoning)? Some humanities/social science students may be required to take this course as a result of placement test scores.
For Spring, 2001 the only students who must take 92.111 are those who were placed in sections 221-232 of 92.111 in Fall, 2000 but did not pass. Other students who are weak in mathematics, particularly those having difficulty in 92.183 or 92.283, may elect to take this course. Massachusetts Teachers Test Background: According to the Department of Education, the test of communication and literacy skills assessed the proficiency of candidates at a level required for a bachelor's degree, and the subject tests for specific certificates assessed proficiency and depth of understanding of the subject required for a baccalaureate major. In January, 1998, The Department of Education released the Question and Answer booklet on the Massachusetts Teacher Tests, which included a statement that candidates taking the test on April 4 and July 11 "will satisfy the testing requirements automatically". At the time of the first test administration, however, the cut score had not been determined. Four days later (July 6) the results were mailed out, along with a free admission form to the July 11 test for students who failed all or part of the exam, and on July 11, approximately 3000 students took the second offering of the certification exam. The scores from this second administration are expected by mid-August. Concerns: Before any interpretation or explanation of the high failure rate on the Teachers Tests can be offered, a number of concerns must be addressed. Since we cannot evaluate the content of the tests (comment cannot be made regarding the content until the content is made available - and actual questions and data regarding test answers have not been released), we must focus on the test process. When focusing on the administration of the test a number of flaws in the process become apparent. Many education professors, schools of education, and students may have been under the impression that the first two administrations of the test would be for statistical or normative purposes (such a process is typical in test development) and the fact that the

If you instead refuse the test, the suspension is now increased to 180 days from 120, also only for a first offense. For those under 21, or those with a prior OUI conviction, the penalties for refusal of the breath test have also both increased from 180 days to 1 year.
You are in a better position to protect your license and freedom if you refuse the breathalyzer test, and it is now also typically easier to receive a hardship license with the help of an experienced attorney. It's also now possible to receive a hardship license after a second offense. A hardship license is valid for 12 hours a day (7am to 7pm) to be used only for traveling to and from work. Massachusetts, General Ed Quota News: Affirmative action backlash tests colleges [Boston Globe] "With an upcoming courtroom showdown and a presidential election raising the stakes, affirmative action at state universities across the nation has reached a turning point, as a growing number of colleges gut or abolish boosts given to minority applicants, particularly blacks and Hispanics. "For the first time since affirmative action became widespread, freshmen planning to attend the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the University of Virginia this fall were not admitted under policies that college officials acknowledge heavily benefited some minority students with mediocre grades or test scores. "This month, Florida's 10 public universities officially stopped using preferences in admissions. Instead, they are taking all applicants ranked in the top 20 percent of state high schools - a policy that relies on schools that are largely black or Hispanic to guarantee pools of minority students. For example, for a mainly Hispanic high school with 200 seniors, the top 20 percent policy would guarantee admission to 40 students, many of whom would probably be Hispanic.

These portfolios are based on "expanded" state standards that describe academic outcomes appropriate for students with significant disabilities. Teachers collect "evidence" of their students’ performance on the standards during targeted instructional activities or structured student observations to create portfolios that contain an array of work samples, instructional data sheets, audio- and videotapes, or other evidence organized into "portfolio strands" in each content area.

Malden, Massachusetts 02148-5023 Dear Commissioner Driscoll: This letter relates to the resolution of complaint number 01-99-1104, which was filed with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) against the Massachusetts Department of Education (MDE). Although I have not seen it, it is my understanding that the complaint involves the administration of the General Educational Development (GED) examination and was filed on behalf of a person with a learning disability. Neither the General Educational Development Testing Service (GEDTS) nor its parent organization, the American Council on Education, is named as a party in the complaint. Nevertheless, in order to promote the distribution of information that assists persons with disabilities who seek an accommodated administration of the GED Tests, and to facilitate the processing of such requests, GEDTS has agreed to take the following actions:
  • Assisting persons with disabilities and their advocates understand how to complete the GED Request for Accommodations forms in a timely manner.

Judge rules Massachusetts school funding formula insufficient for poor districts
    By Ken Maguire
ASSOCIATED PRESS 11:28 a.m. April 26, 2004 The 300-page advisory ruling by Judge Margot Botsford in a lawsuit filed by 19 school districts sets the stage for the Supreme Judicial Court to again dictate the future of education in Massachusetts. If the high court agrees with her findings, it could radically change the way the state spends money to educate its nearly 1 million public school students. A 1993 ruling by the Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court, found that the state hadn't met its constitutional duty to fund education. That led to the passage of a reform law that overhauled school funding in the state, establishing mandatory or "foundation" levels of funding. Since then, Massachusetts has spent nearly $31 billion on schools, much of it in lower-income districts. But the 1993 ruling left the case open for review, and the lawyers who won that case returned to court in June, arguing that the state Department of Education still shortchanges poor districts. They said those districts still suffer from crowded classrooms and unsafe facilities, and regularly lose top teachers to wealthy suburbs.

Massachusetts Department of Education Fails Basic Math Test
    Boston Herald, May 22, 1999
Parents have long been aware that the 17% special education figure that is touted by legislators and department administrators is false and misleading, but no one has been listening and no one wants to be contradicted. The special education fiasco or disaster that administrator types and legislators have been whining about for the last two years is all based on the central premise that our special education population is 17% and the "highest in the land". Because of that, we need major reform. We need to slash and hack a landmark piece of legislation that has lifted children out of darkness and despair into society and has given them a chance of having a life worth living and contributing to our society. Rather than funding the mandate, kids and their parents have been blamed for abusing and extorting the system. But that 17% number is only recognized and accepted by our own Massachusetts Dept of Ed. Everyone else in the country, including the US Department of Education reports Massachusetts to have a special education population of 11%.
