http://www.finaid.org/otheraid/state.phtml
US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...

"The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions."
The Chronicle of Higher Education
Accrediting Groups Issue Recommendations for Distance-Education Programs
"Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Any Violence is Too Much Violence:
Safe Schools / Healthy Students Kicks Off in Hampshire County
NORTHAMPTON, MA: School violence can be prevented. Safe Schools/Healthy Students, a federal initiative to unite communities to ensure the safe and healthy development of our children, is one step in that direction. The Hampshire Educational Collaborative and the Hampshire County school districts of Amherst-Pelham, Easthampton, Northampton, Gateway Regional, and Ware are joining 77 other local educational agencies across the country that are actively participating in Safe Schools/Healthy Students partnerships. A federal grant recently awarded to the Collaborative—one of only 20 awarded nationwide this year—will provide $2,919,699 over three years for project implementation. The program is funded by the U.S. Departments of Justice, Education, and Human Services. Local project partners are set to gather on Thursday, January 31, at the Delaney House in Holyoke to begin work and look at the challenges ahead. The national Safe Schools/Healthy Students Comprehensive Plan targets six interrelated elements identified as key ingredients for a safe and healthy school community that must be addressed by participating districts. These include a safe school environment; violence, alcohol, and other drug prevention and early intervention; school and community mental health preventive and treatment intervention services; early childhood psychosocial and emotional development services, education reform; and safe school policies. Under each element, schools and partner agencies will be provided with resources to carry out goals through a collaborative framework, while evaluating progress to inform future program strategies and funding.
