CHAMPS
after-school programs are held throughout Eastern Massachusetts for children, many of whom area challenged physically, developmentally, and emotionally. These music, movement, drama and art groups are led by qualified arts therapists who know how to "draw out the best" in children. Programs address life skills needed for: communicating thoughts and feelings; realizing one's strengths; increasing attention; building peer relationships. Classes include 4 to 8 children, small enough to provide an intensive, fun-filled learning experience for all. Scholarships are available and all children are welcome to participate. If there is not a CHAMPS program in existence near you, we will work with interested parents and organizations to start one. Creative Arts Therapists for Adults of All Abilities
Creative Arts Therapy programs are specifically tailored to meet the needs of adults who are challenged physically, developmentally, and emotionally. An initial interview session with the adult and care provider allows the clinical director to assess the client's particular needs and goals. A particular arts form is then chosen in order to meet the levels which will best engage and challenge participants. Through intense learning in an art form, the adult will often: increase their range of communication; reach new personal goals; and enhance their ability to relate with others. Small group, individual, or family therapy is available and we work in group homes, day programs and treatment centers.

AMHERST The inclusive-style classroom may be denying elementary school special needs students the attention they require and the education they deserve, according to some local teachers. But an analysis of available data gives a different picture. Now only one question remains: which method of grouping is most effective in helping students, with and without disabilities, to achieve their expected goals? IDEA requires that disabled students be placed in a setting that constitutes the "least restrictive environment." In other words, the government calls for disabled students to be educated with those who are nondisabled, to the maximum extent appropriate. However, teachers such as Mary Donovan, a fourth-grade instructor at Crocker Farm Elementary School in Amherst, say the law is often misinterpreted. The "least restrictive environment" isn’t always the regular classroom for special needs students, Donovan said.

June 15, 2003 By Jay P. Greene and Greg Forster Since Massachusetts has special education enrollment rates well above the national average, the state's schools labor under both the high cost of special education services and the burden of lawsuits brought by dissatisfied parents.
No one is happy with the current system and it is time to consider alternatives to how we ensure services for disabled students.
Under the current model, public schools and families agree on a document that outlines what services schools will provide. This document, an Individual Education Plan, is essentially a contract between schools and families. If schools fail to deliver on the services promised in the IEP, families can take their schools to court and force them to comply.
Though it might seem like an IEP backed up by the threat of legal action would be an excellent way to guarantee appropriate services for disabled students, in practice this formal, legalistic process is highly inefficient and often fails to protect special education students while causing excessive paperwork and legal fees for public schools.

As the Parent of a Child With Special Education Needs, Are You Entitled to Damages? Ordinarily, a prevailing parent in an Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) court action is only entitled to a compensatory education for his/her child and is not entitled to damages, which is money awarded in order to compensate for a loss. It is important for parents to understand from the outset that damages are not recoverable, so that they have realistic expectations when filing for due process or seeking the aid of an attorney. Eight of eleven Circuit Courts have held that damages cannot be recovered for IDEA violations. Only the Second and Third Circuits allow for the recovery of damages under IDEA. The Ninth Circuit has still yet to decide the issue; however, a California District Court, which is in the Ninth Circuit, has recently ruled that parents can recover damages in IDEA actions. In Goleta Union v. Ordway, 166 F.Supp.2d 1287 (C.D. Cal., 2002), the District Court held that the mother of a child transferred to high school without having his special education or behavioral needs met or his placement checked, was entitled to damages.

At home, children with disabilities get individualized education
by Gail Felker W here there's a will, there's a way. That's the motto of a growing number of homeschooling families with special-needs kids. Gone are the days of the single choice of putting those children into the hands of "experts" in the public schools. Families are discovering that they can educate their special-needs kids at home. The resources are out there. Consultants, support groups, and online assistance are available now. The only hurdle is overcoming one's feelings of inadequacy. When Barbara Schoenly, of Salisbury, Connecticut, chose to homeschool her son, Conant, little did she know that learning problems would surface. Conant struggled with phonics. Frustration hit, and the tears would come. Was it just willfulness, Barbara wondered, or maybe a lack of motivation? She persevered. By second grade, Conant still was not reading. Blending words was a chore. He would try to guess but usually guessed wrong. His handwriting was atrocious. Finally Barbara had him tested and discovered that Conant suffers from dyslexia, the condition in which the brain reverses letters and jumbles words, making reading and writing difficult.

Changing Attitudes Toward the Disabled Overview
MS Means Must Succeed is a five-month program that provides students with an opportunity to become sensitive to the needs and abilities of physically disabled adults. The project teaches the philosophy that people can excel despite their circumstances by demonstrating how science and technology enable disabled people to live useful lives. Students conduct bi-weekly visits to The Boston Home, a residential center serving adults with multiple sclerosis and related neurological diseases. They develop interview skills by talking with residents about their backgrounds and favorite celebrations. Improving writing and computer skills through weekly e-mail correspondence with their pals, students also learn about careers related to working with the disabled.
