Giese: More info about cancer needed
NU researcher says he hopes to discover more facts about risk factors
By Michael Keegan
espite the current wealth of information unearthed by researchers, more facts about cancer's risk factors needs to be discovered to help prevent the often fatal disease, professor Roger Giese said during the 35th annual Klein Lecture last Thursday in the Egan Research Center's Raytheon Amphitheater. Giese, the Bradstreet professor of bioanalytical chemistry and director of the environmental cancer research program at the Barnett Institute, noted that while the prognosis for cancer survival is better than ever, there is rising concern over the incidence of cancer, especially regarding environmental factors as possible causes of cancer. "There is a disturbing report that the rate of childhood cancer is increasing by about 10 percent per year," he said. "One out of 330 children gets cancer before the age of 20 and the average age of children with cancer is 6 years old." Giese said that research has shown that about one-third of cancer cases are tobacco-related, one-third are related to diet and the other one-third are caused by other factors.

Posted 10/31/01: We are using this series as an opportunity to tell participants about
the work Bill Pabst of Missouri 4-H Youth Development Program has pulled together regarding after school computer labs. The labs use video
game-type software that is non-violent and educational and further enriched when community resources are infused into the program. After the older elementary/middle school students learn the software, they then work with younger students in the cross-age teaching model, which we know is effective. Joan Hickman
