REVISED
A Guide to Native American Studies Programs
in the United States and Canada
Robert M. Nelson, Editor
Ten years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites. Our dream was to provide a comprehensive survey of U.S. and Canadian Native American Studies programs being offered as majors, minors, and certifications at the baccalaureate level or above, using (with some slight modifications and additions) Professor Ballinger's earlier categories of information on each program. And although we have made a considerable effort to locate, contact, and acquire information about Native American Studies programs (by whatever title: Native American Studies and American Indian Studies are the most common designations, though there are others) at all North American baccalaureate-granting institutions, readers should keep in mind that the

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park HOME TRAVEL BASICS ACTIVITIES FACILITIES ... UNDERGROUND RAILROAD Special Resource Study Appendix B: Massachusetts Coastway Massachusetts has a beautiful and varied coastline rich in history and natural resources. The geographical configuration of the coast has been a catalyst for the development of commercial centers, coastal defenses, transportation networks, and rural settlements. A Massachusetts Coastway could preserve, protect, and interpret diverse historic and cultural sites, recreation areas, and natural areas by providing public access to the water along the full length of the coast via water and land transportation systems and a public information program. In addition, such an approach would make connections among important Massachusetts sites by emphasizing historical themes, providing environmental education, encouraging recreational opportunities, promoting tourism, guiding public development, and supporting preservation efforts. The North Atlantic Region of the National Park Service is involved with a number of special resource studies in cities located along the Massachusetts coast. Although there are nationally significant resources in most of these cities, not all merit National Park status or long term NPS assistance. However, when the cities are put in the larger context of the Massachusetts coast, the sites could work together with existing National Parks to tell the story of New England's rich maritime history. Each site could benefit by being part of a larger Coastway network through shared information materials, signage, educational programs, and a coordinated transportation system. The concept of "welcome centers" along the coastway could be developed as places for visitors to get information, find out about the specific sites, assess what transportation options are available and learn about featured programs. Possible welcome centers might be located in Fall River, Boston, and Gloucester. Other cities, like New Bedford, could be incorporated into the Coastway and as a result could attract more visitors because of the concept.

A Curriculum of United States Labor History for Teachers.
Sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society
    [Table of Contents]
    Introduction
The United States has the bloodiest history of labor of any industrialized nation on Earth. It is a story rich in human drama and tragedy. It is also one of progress and hope. This is a resource that teachers of United States history can use to incorporate our rich social and labor history into their courses. Using the ideas employed here teachers will increase student understanding of the American economic system and the important issues we all face as workers today. The concepts and lessons will build on each other so that at the end of the school year the student should have a working knowledge of the importance of labor in society. A guiding theme of this work is how laborers have earned a voice in the workplace and increased their share of the economic pie. Teachers should highlight the stark contrast between today's working environment and the relationship between workers and owners of the past. The scope of United States history has been divided into eleven basic periods. These will correspond with the unit divisions that many modern textbook companies use. In each period the main events and issues of US labor history are introduced. Concepts, ideas and resources are presented to aid the teacher. In several of the units specific lessons are available for immediate use.

Forbes 10 best places to get rich advertisement document.write(' Want to do business? Move to Madison, Wis. Want to get rich? Move to Palo Alto. By Betsy Schiffman, Forbes Madison has been anointed the Best Place For Business in the U.S. in 2004 by Forbes magazine. Its favorable ratings in among other things income and job growth, low cost of doing business, available labor pool, quality of life and a university that has spawned a lot of biotech companies make it a fine city in which to live and prosper. One of the truly great things about the United States is that, with enough intelligence and determination, people can get rich almost anywhere. Whether it's from owning chains of dry-cleaners in Queens, car dealerships in Chicago or oil wells in West Texas, for hundreds of years fortunes have been made in every state in the Union. There are some places, however, where the chances of creating wealth are much greater than others.
