Massachusetts Says 'I Do'
As the SJC’s historic ruling takes effect, all America should be proud

Last night, the eyes of the world were upon Cambridge, the first city in America to legally grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. While the struggle is far from over, the time to celebrate this momentous victory has arrived. The November ruling from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) upholding same-sex marriage took effect at midnight last night, allowing couples across the state to take their vows. This historic occasion marks the culmination of a six-month struggle to fend off the political and legal attacks of gay marriage opponents like Gov. Mitt Romney, who have tried to circumvent the SJC’s ruling. On a larger scale, today also represent an enormous step forward for gay marriage advocates across the state and country. It is heartening to see that not even the manipulations and false rationalizations of the governor, or for that matter, President Bush, can suppress the efforts of same-sex couples to gain a right to which they are unquestionably entitled. The right to marry the person of one’s choosing—regardless of gender—is a fundamental right that all Americans are granted, and we hope that Massachusetts is the first of 50 states to recognize these rights. This day is historic because it marks the triumph of the principle of fairness and right over discrimination and fear.

Bernard Law
(AP) Cardinal Bernard Law
July 27, 2001 Cardinal Law’s denial of complicity in hiding evidence of priestly child abuse was published in the Boston Pilot , America’s oldest Catholic newspaper, as Law himself faced civil litigation from 70 parishioners in the Archdiocese of Boston. Their lawsuit charged that Law deliberately concealed the crimes of a pedophile priest—Rev. John Geoghan—and transferred Geoghan to a new parish in 1985, without notifying police or warning parishioners of Geoghan’s criminal activities. Cardinal Law has admitted, in court documents, that he knew Father Geoghan had molested seven boys in 1984, but approved Geoghan’s transfer after an “independent medical examination” suggested the move would be “appropriate and safe.” In fact, it was neither.

Stained Glass Equality
The Osgood File (CBS Radio Network): 9/11/01
Printer-friendly version E-mail this story to a friend Female saints get equal billing at a Massachusetts church in new stained glass windows. The priest at a little Catholic church in Massachusetts recently installed new stained glass windows in his church. But these windows are far from traditional because exactly half of the saints represented are female. Father John Jay Nichols says it's just a matter of fair play, as well as an opportunity to make a statement about the importance of women in Christian history. So the new windows of his church, St. Albert's, in East Weymouth, feature many new female saints, such as Elizabeth Ann Seton, the native New Yorker who became the first American saint. The church installed Saint Katherine Drexler's window the day after she was canonized, and Father Nichols says he has taken a gamble on Mother Theresa, who has not yet officially become a saint. Father Nichols also chose to represent Kateri Tekawitha, a Mohawk woman, who is the first Native American proposed for canonization. Several Massachusetts churches now portray female saints in equal numbers to male saints. And according to Virginia Raguin, an art history professor at College of the Holy Cross, and an expert in the field of stained glass, a growing number of churches all over the country are joining the effort to make a statement about the importance of female saints. She says that the current trend in stained glass is to intersperse more female and modern day saints along with the depiction of traditional saints like the four evangelists and St. Francis.

NE churches out ahead of gay debate
Local Episcopal congregations have been affirming gay members for years
By Ethan Jacobs Published: Thursday, August 14, 2003 Canon V. Gene Robinson's recent election to the post of Bishop of New Hampshire became the subject of much controversy within the Episcopal Church USA. Conservatives within the church predicted a schism, arguing that Robinson's confirmation by the national church leaders would force conservatives to split off and form a new branch of the Anglican Church within the United States. Yet in the aftermath of Robinson's August 5 confirmation in Minneapolis, Episcopal congregations in the Bay State have generally seen Robinson's election as a sign of progress within the church. Local GLBT Episcopalians in particular have seen both Robinson's election and the August 7 church resolution acknowledging churches that bless same-sex couples to be a validation of their own place within the church.
"The gay and lesbian members of our parish see this as a tremendous affirmation," said Reverend David Killian, rector of All Saints Parish in Brookline. Although church attendance is down overall due to the summer months, Killian expects that other gay and lesbian people inspired by Robinson's election and the resolution on same-sex unions could join the church come the Fall.
