Boarding School Fair Home School Registration List of Attendees List of Attendees
Below is a list of the boarding schools that have been present at the Town School Fair for the past several years. Generally, the number of schools in attendance corresponds to a varied cross section of students seeking a match to their own individual abilities, special talents, and athletic pursuits. Boarding schools across the United States, representing the East, Midwest, Western states and California have annually numbered between 90 to 100 participants. In addition, many Canadian schools and even some from Western Europe have presented at the fair. The large number of schools attending the Fair guarantees the presentation of a variety of curricula for all inquiring students. This list will be updated each September and will be sent with the invitations to Bay Area schools. The number of families visiting the Fair has consistently been in the 200+ range.

85. Boarding School
Famous boarding schools like the Carlisle School (pictured above) and the Hampton Institute engaged in a brutal program of forced incorporation.
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/INCORP/Native/school.html
Boarding School
Student body assembled on the Carlisle Indian School Grounds, 1892.
The Boarding School experience was, according to one of its harshest and most vocal critics, Zitkala Sa, a"miserable state of cultural dislocation," that created problems long after the children returned home. As the stories below reveal the boarding school experience not only alienated the children from their families but also from their culture as many of the children were removed to early to remember all but traces of their traditional life styles.
An Indian Boy's Story By Ah-nen-la-de-ni[Daniel La France]
In this autobiographical tale the author shares his experience as a young man in an American system of cultural imperialism so pervasive that the name applied to Ah-nen-la-de-ni's people, the "Mohawk," had an English, not a Native American origination. Ah-nen-la-de-ni's story poignantly demonstrates the emotional and physical burdens placed on young Native American children at these institutions of incorporation. Using the term "inmates" to describe the students, Ah-nen-la-de-ni reveals the physical and psychological fear felt by the young students and the state of cultural purgatory that this experience left its victims in as they were at once alienated from their own culture and denied access to the culture of the mainstream.

Boarding Schools and Summer Camps
NOTICE: The following posts are taken from the Christian ADHD List List of Boarding Schools and Summer Camps for ADD/ADHD Children These have not been personally evaluated by ADHD of the Christian Kind so it is up to each family to personally check out any schools you may consider for your child. Please do this in person. An account of one member's visit to Bunker Hill Military School/Camp and an update on that school. My first thought was "oh no, not for a 6 yo." But then I finished reading your post. I know that it sounds like the only way out. Just seek the Lord's face on this one and do what He gives you the peace to do. My heart goes out to you. I don't know how you'll do it; but if the Lord truly wants you to take this step, He will give you the peace, grace, and funds to accomplish it. I do not know anything about boarding schools for ADD/ADHD. But I have a friend who keeps her autistic son in a home with very good results. However, she has had to move him several times to find a suitable program. Her case is very like yours- her son is high IQ, but was dangerous to those around him and to himself. He is not the typical autistic- he is high functioning. He requires 24 hour supervision and a challenging educational program. He understands what is going on in his head now, so he comes home on weekends and extended visits but asks to go back when he feels funny again.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
If you feel you qualify for damages or remedies that might be awarded in this class action please fill out the form below.

BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT
Boarding House Park
Lowell, Massachusetts September 28, 1999
Thank you very much, Jan [Paschal] for that kind introduction, and for your efforts in coordinating these Back to School events all over New England. And I want to thank Mayor [Eileen] Donoghue and her staff for coordinating this wonderful event. Thanks as well to Superintendent [George] Tsapatsaris for arranging the involvement of the Lowell school system in today's celebration. I also want to thank Wilson Goode, the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, for being here. In addition, we have Ed Jerome, the Principal of Edgartown Elementary School with us - Edgartown Elementary is probably most famous for being the media center for President Clinton's vacations to Martha's Vineyard - no small task, I can assure you. Ed is also the Chair of the Massachusetts America Goes Back to School Committee, so thank you Ed for being here, and for all your hard work on these events. Lowell is a city with a long history of accomplishment, and - as this event demonstrates - clearly one that cares about its children and is dedicated to improving their education. Not only is this an All American city, Lowell was one of the leaders of America's Industrial Revolution, with its network of canals and textile mills helping to clothe our nation for over a century.
