By Aaron Gouveia / News Staff Writer Tuesday, November 18, 2003 MILLIS A group of special needs students from a Millis alternative school asked for selectmen's help so the new Plain Street Bridge could be renamed. The group of students and teachers from Strawberry Fields School, a school for children with learning challenges, told selectmen they want to rename the Plain Street Bridge "The Wishing Bridge," so whenever people travel across it, they can make a wish and raise their spirits. Cal Hottelet, 21, and Filly Mastrangelo, 18, are students at the school and said they came up with the idea on Veterans Day. The pair, along with peers and teachers, walked to the bridge on Nov. 11 and placed a pink carnation on the bridge to signify their "wish" that America's servicemen and women return home safely. Hottelet and Mastrangelo spoke at last night's meeting and tried to persuade selectmen to get behind their idea. "Wishing on a star and wishing wells is fun, like believing in magic," Hottelet said. "We all need reasons to have hope in our hearts and we believe making wishes can help make our dreams come true."

Alternative Routes to Public School Certification All states require teachers to have some form of certification before they are hired. In Massachusetts , as in an increasing number of states, this is called provisional certification because public school teachers are regularly required to renew their certification. In Massachusetts and many other states, graduates who have not completed a standard program may submit a portfolio to the Department of Education requesting provisional certification. Massachusetts Regulations provide for a Certification Review Panel which offers an alternative route to certification for candidates appearing to meet standards through experience and formal education, but not meeting all requirements specified in the Regulations. Other states have similar programs. Also, in many states there are serious teacher shortages which compel school districts to hire teachers who have not completed any of the usual certification requirements. Such teachers are generally given something called either "emergency" or "temporary" certification, and often they are required to take some courses to begin a program in teaching while they are teaching fulltime. Adopting Fair Elections for Student Governments February 2003 Big Wins! Interest in fair elections systems for student elections around the country has been gaining momentum. More and more schools are using Instant Runoff Voting for single winner elections like student body president. And some schools have also added the Choice Voting method of full representation for their legislative elections. This has been evidenced by two recent victories at major U.S. universities. University of California at Davis On February 20, students at UCD voted 67%-33% to use choice voting for Associated Student Senate elections and IRV for presidential elections. The California Aggie reports on the change. Duke University Duke Student Government will elect their six executive committee members through instant runoff voting. After approving the system for this spring's elections, officials have since decided the ballot counting proceedures will not be ready until spring 2004.
