THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC School choice is one of the hottest topics in education. Not only does it have the attention of educators, it has the endorsement of President Bush and a large following of parents. Books are being written, arguments waged, and bills drafted. There is a growing feeling that if parents can choose which schools their children attend, education will improve. However, there are groups urging caution. Some are concerned that issues of equity will be passed over in the push for school choice, causing at-risk students to fall further behind. Because of these concerns, choice plans that focus on equity have begun to receive national attention. Foremost among these is controlled choice, which attempts to create equitable education in a district by providing choice while simultaneously preserving racial and ethnic balance.

about the image

Like the School itself, this section remains a work in progress. It is intended to provide access to various materials relating to the School's history. Graham and Parks is the result of joining two schools in 1981 the Cambridge Alternative Public School (CAPS), which was a small, nationally acclaimed magnet school, and the Webster School, which was a small, traditional neighborhood school. The school was located on Upton Street from 1982 until 2003, when it moved to 44 Linnaean Street.
Saundra Graham Saundra Graham was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Septemer 5, 1941, one of eleven children of Roberta Betts Postell and Charles B. Postell. She attended public schools in Cambridge, the University of Massachusetts and Harvard University Extension. In 1978 she received a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard. Saundra first gained international attention in 1970 when she led a group of neighborhood residents and disrupted a Harvard University commencement. For over a year before the incident Cambridge citizens of the Riverside neighborhood had attempted to get a response from the university for its continued real estate expansion. Through her action, Harvard finally acknowledged publically its covert role in what was actual displacement of long-time residents from their homes. Harvard responded by constructing an elderly housing complex and ten years later, a family housing complex.

In 1986, the Medford Public Schools recognized the need to serve a specific population of special needs children with social/emotional and behavioral/academic disabilities. Medford successfully created its own therapeutic alternative, which incorporated all educational programming found in its schools, and added needed clinical services, extended programming, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Services. Each student was treated with needed services in an individualized manner prescribed on the Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) by the TEAM. Small group and individual attention were used most frequently with an eye toward returning students to the least restrictive environment. As a result of an increase in the number of students with significant behavior/emotional problems who were referred to this program, a new focus was developed. The Medford Public Schools understood the need for comprehensive quality services that focused on prevention as well as intervention strategies. The Fulton Heights Alternative School was established. It began its first full year of operation in September of 1998 for grades 1-8.

College is funded, in part, by the massachusetts Department of Education alternative Education Grant. News Release . New alternative High School at Holyoke
http://www.collaborative.org/MtTomAcademy.html
Mt. Tom Academy Alternative High School at Holyoke Community College
Mission
The mission of MT TOM ACADEMY is to serve the students of the participating high schools who might benefit from an alternative, high school environment. The program offers instruction in high school and college subjects to students who have been unsuccessful in the traditional high school setting. The program will identify the strengths, talents and unique abilities of its participating students. Support will be provided to each individual student in an effort to develop a clear pathway to the completion of a high school diploma or a General Educational Diploma (G.E.D.). Success will be measured by the individual student’s acceptance into a college program or placement into an appropriate job setting.
Philosophy
All students can learn and should be given an opportunity to learn in a setting that focuses on their strengths. Students can succeed when learning takes place in an open and diverse environment that challenges them in a nonthreatening and supportive manner. Learning should proceed at a pace which is appropriate for the individual learner. Modern technological tools and methods of education will provide opportunities for remediation and individualized enrichment. Academic learning will be reinforced by real life work-based experiences.
Factors for Selection of Students
  • Have had unsuccessful experience in traditional high school setting.

BOSTON
The grant will be used to establish 150 high quality educational alternatives for students being left behind at traditional large comprehensive high schools throughout the country. Other partners in this nationwide effort include the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Walter S. Johnson Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Charles S. Mott Foundation. Commonwealth Corporation (CommCorp), a Massachusetts quasi-public organization dedicated to empowering people and businesses to learn, earn and succeed, is one of eight organizations nationwide to receive the grant funding. CommCorp’s Center for Youth Development and Education (CYDE) has piloted many initiatives for youth to help them succeed in school and beyond. Its Diploma Plus program will administer the Gates Foundation grant. The program challenges students to meet high performance standards while providing support and guidance along the way, and targeting specific learning styles while still requiring students to take traditional core classes and pass the state mandated assessment exam. Students also participate in a transitional senior year in which they enroll in college courses and an internship. The $4.5M Gates Foundation grant will be used to expand four existing sites, assist in one school’s conversion to the Diploma Plus model, and establish 10 new schools. The following four schools will have their Diploma Plus programs expanded:

Alternative School Program Standards The Background: Tennessee Code Annotated Section 49-6-4017(f)(2) requires that "The State Board of Education shall provide a curriculum for alternative schools to ensure students receive specialized attention needed to effectively reform students to prevent them from being repeat offenders." The Alternative School Program Standards provide a framework for local school systems to use in developing curriculum to meet the needs of the students. The standards define an alternative school environment with curricula, counseling, and resources to enable the student to master life skills that are critical to social, emotional, and academic growth and success. The standards were developed by a broad-based committee that also developed the service learning curriculum standards. The draft was circulated statewide for comments. ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL PROGRAM STANDARDS The Alternative School Program Standards provide a framework for local school systems to use in developing curriculum to meet the needs of the students. MISSION The mission of the Alternative School is to intervene positively with students who currently are not succeeding in a traditional school environment.
