Maryland High School
Teaches JATC Curriculum
At the Local 307 training school in Cumberland, Maryland, some of the best first-year apprentices enter with two years of key wiring experience, thanks to a local technical high school curriculum that offers the best electrical construction instruction while steering them down the path of IBEW membership. "I’m giving back something to the community and I’m spreading the union word," said Taylor, a 34-year IBEW member and certified instructor at the Center for Career and Technology in Cumberland. "Whenever I start talking about what it takes to be successful, that’s what I push." The following year, those who pass enter advanced electric, or what has become known as the "union program," which uses the first-year apprenticeship curriculum. If they finish that year successfully, they win an interview at the Local 307 JATC. They enter as second-year apprentices—if they are ultimately accepted into the program—but still have to complete the school’s requirement of 8,000 hours on the job. Winning a slot as an apprentice is often difficult because of the increasingly competitive nature of the program and the limited number of openings.

There is a lot of competition for positions and, if the job market is slow, finding employment may not be easy. Start looking for a job well before you actually want to start working. Ask family or adult friends for tips like dressing neatly and being on time for interviews. If you can't locate a job, consider becoming a volunteer. Volunteer work is a way of establishing a work record which can be used later as a reference when applying for paid employment. Some places which accept volunteers are hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, libraries, and recreation centers.

INTEGRATION OF ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION MYTHS AND REALITIES
by Bettina A. Lankard, 1994 ERIC Clearinghouse on Adult, Career, and Vocational Education
Center on Education and Training for Employment
1900 Kenny Road
Columbus, OH 43210-1090 Although most educators support the concept of integrating academic and vocational education and recognize the benefits it affords students, implementation of integrated curriculum and instruction is seen as problematical. Disciplinary specialization, status differences among teachers, and lack of leadership are some of the stumbling blocks noted by Grubb and Kraskouskas (1993). This MYTHS AND REALITIES highlights some of the "tales" that discourage integration and discusses the "truths" about what is involved in the implementation process. Myth: Successful Integration Relies Solely on Teacher Commitment and Cooperation
Myth: Integration Will Result in the Loss of Teaching Positions

Myth: Integration Results in the Majority Imposing Their Will on the Minority

References
MYTH: SUCCESSFUL INTEGRATION RELIES SOLELY ON TEACHER COMMITMENT AND COOPERATION
Although teachers play a significant role in integrating academic and vocational education, they cannot effect significant change in the teaching and learning process without administrative, institutional, community, and state support. Traditionally, the academic curriculum and vocational curriculum have been offered in significantly different ways. To merge the two in an integrated approach to education requires new forms of organizational delivery. Integration involves restructuring, wherein the administrator becomes more of a facilitator than a director, providing teachers with opportunities that will empower them in their efforts. Some activities recommended to facilitate integration are the following (Finch et al. 1992):
