UM Medical Center Chosen to Provide Team Doctors to Terrapin Athletes
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has selected the University of Maryland Medical Center's sports medicine program to provide medical services to all Terrapin teams. Orthopaedic surgeon Leigh Ann Curl, M.D. will serve as head physician, one of the few women in the country to hold such a position. Dr. Curl was a First-Team All-American as a basketball player for the University of Connecticut. Tom Terrell, M.D., who was a forward on Jacksonville University's 1986 NCAA basketball team, will provide primary care to the student athletes. The doctors are part of the growing University Sports Medicine program of the University of Maryland Medical Center, which also provides medical care for the Baltimore Ravens and athletes at UMBC, Coppin State and 14 high schools. "We are proud that the Terrapins have chosen us to provide the same expert medical and surgical care that we provide to all athletes, from the Ravens to the 'weekend warriors' with tennis elbow or tendinitis," said Morton I. Rapoport, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the University of Maryland Medical System. "I'm impressed with the stature of the University of Maryland Sports Medicine program and with the caliber of the physicians who now will attend to the health of our student athletes," said William E. Kirwan, Ph.D., president of the University of Maryland, College Park.

San Francisco, CA, November 9, 2002
- Former Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., is the third recipient of the Herbert W. Nickens, M.D. Award. Dr. Satcher will be honored at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) 113th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, where he will deliver an address on targeting health care disparities by increasing the diversity of medical school applicants. The Herbert W. Nickens, M.D. Award, named for the AAMC's former vice president of the Division of Community and Minority Programs, is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to promote justice in medical education and health care. As Surgeon General (1998-2002) and Assistant Secretary for Health, the second person in history to hold both positions simultaneously, Dr. Satcher led the federal government's effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health care. This initiative was incorporated into one of two major goals of "Healthy People 2010," the nation's public health agenda for the next several years.
