Consumers need better help to navigate the rapidly growing amount of health care information available on the World Wide Web, even though at least two dozen sets of guidelines and criteria for improving health Web site quality have been published. At the same time, newspapers, trade journals and other media should do more to call attention to those attributes that make a health Web site relevant and useful, according to two studies published today by Consumer WebWatch. The first study, which evaluated existing criteria sets for health sites put forth by medical institutions, professional groups, government organizations and others, is a joint project of the Health Information Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, and Consumer WebWatch, and was authored by Peter Goldschmidt, M.D., PhD., and the institute's founder and president. The second study, analyzing discussions of health Web sites in the medical and popular media, was commissioned by Consumer WebWatch from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. It was directed and edited by

C. Betty Long, WHCLIST member from Roswell, New Mexico and Chair of the Awards Committee, presented the award. Ms. Mary Lou Dewey, member of the Maryland Library Advisory Board and honorary trustee of CCPL, encouraged the library community to write in support of Governor Glendening's nomination. There are many examples of Glendening's outstanding service to librariesAn early one was the "Ready to Learn" project with Maryland Public Television. Books and materials to promote reading were donated to Maryland public libraries and the Governor himself was featured in the promotional ads. During the beginning of his first term, Governor Glendening and First Lady Frances Anne Glendening were advocates for the Maryland Center for the Book. In September, 1998, he announced "Reading Across Maryland," a project to train reading tutors.

Maryland: Forum on Teen-Age Sexuality Sounds a Warning
    Baltimore Sun
Students and parents filled Centennial High School's media center in Ellicot City, Md., on a recent Thursday for the forum "Teenage Dating and Sexuality." Sponsored by HC DrugFree a coalition of parents, schools and county agencies the discussion delivered a warning: Howard County kids are having unprotected sex and are getting pregnant and many are contracting STDs, said Kathy Siltanen, charge nurse at the Howard County Health Department's Teen Clinics. Siltanen told attendees that a cross-section of Howard County kids from every high school and socioeconomic group are seen at her clinic. "Everybody has this attitude of 'not my kid, not my county,'" said Laura Smit, coordinator for HC DrugFree and the Coalition for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. "I think that kids also feel powerless going against the mainstream media, which is sexualizing everything. And that's where the silence of the parents [comes in] if you don't say anything, then you're letting the media teach your kids," said Smit. Parents seeking advice on what they should say to their children were told to be clear about values, talk early and often with children, and be an active presence in their lives. Do not be afraid to say what you feel, said Anne Anderson Sawyer, instructor in Human Sexuality and Women's Health at Howard Community College and a CAPP volunteer. Scariest to some parents was the idea that some kids divorce the act of sex from love and relationship. "Oral sex is so big [now]. They don't consider it sex, they really don't," Smit said.

Advancements In Health Care Honoree More than 2,100 lives have been saved in the last decade. The waiting time for African Americans in need of a kidney transplant was halved from a national average of 1,335 days to 681 days. The cost of transplanting a kidney has been reduced so dramatically that it is now less expensive for even the sickest patients to have a transplant than to stay on dialysis for more than two-and-a-half years. Dr. Stephen T. Bartlett The University of Maryland Medical Center has an outstanding record for advancing health care that spans from the Baltimore community across the world. It performed Maryland’s first simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplant in 1991, the state’s first successful pancreas-alone transplant in 1993 and the state’s first single lung transplant in 1992. Imagine donating a kidney to a loved one and returning to work two weeks later. That is now possible with the transplant division’s improvements on a minimally invasive technique that uses a smaller incision and the development of the first comprehensive program to offer this procedure to relatives and friends of those who need a transplant. Since 1996, the University of Maryland Medical Center has made easier kidney transplants possible for nearly 800 people — believed to be the most performed by a medical institution anywhere in the world.
