Maryland Hospitals Raising Rates For Treatment
POSTED: 2:32 pm EDT May 6, 2004
BALTIMORE It will soon cost more to be treated at Maryland hospitals. The Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission approved a 5 percent rate increase for inpatients. Outpatient rates will rise by nearly 4 percent. Representatives of hospitals and health centers said the increases aren't enough, but insurers say they go too far and would ultimately be passed to subscribers. Brochure (28KB) Master in Nutrition Science - Master the Science of Nutrition - Highlights Introduction Degree Requirements Job Outlook ... Contact Us Highlights There is no typical workday for Lisa Lachenmayr As an extension educator in nutrition and food safety with the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service, she's a teacher, a researcher, a grant writer, a Web site developer, an innovator, a staff manager, and a leader. "One day I'll be teaching fourth graders; the next, senior citizens. I provide updates to physicians on the latest research, and soon I'll be training public school teachers about new research in nutrition. I write peer-reviewed articles, and I speak at national conferences," says Lachenmayr, who earned her M.S. in nutrition science in 1997. Even though she finds herself juggling many roles, Lachenmayr doesn't lose sight of her focus: teaching people how to make healthy choices. "People think they're experts because of all the information on the Internet. They like to hear that a pill will help them lose weight, that they don't have to eat sensibly and exercise. I bring research-based information to the community and then I try to help them understand and practice it." Introduction Flexible and individualized, the master's program in nutrition science accommodates students with a variety of backgrounds and prepares those students to meet the demands of a nutrition-conscious

    By Lori Montgomery
    Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, April 3, 2004; Page B04 The Maryland House of Delegates voted yesterday to expand health care coverage for the uninsured, approving a $154 million plan to enlarge the state's network of community health centers and to increase Medicaid eligibility for poor adults for only the second time since the 1960s. On a vote of 86 to 54, the House gave final approval to a complex health care package and agreed to fund it by imposing a 1 percent tax on HMO premiums. Under the proposal, the state would use money from a national settlement with tobacco companies to increase payments to doctors who treat Medicaid patients, and it would seek additional funds from the federal government. The plan's author, Del. John A. Hurson (D-Montgomery), said the package would extend some Medicaid coverage to 75,000 uninsured parents who earn less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or about $30,500 for a family of three. Their children are already covered through another state program. But the parents are eligible for Medicaid only if they earn less than 45 percent of the poverty level, or less than $7,000 for a family of three.
