HHS PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES FOR AN AGING AMERICA
Overview: Older Americans compose a larger proportion of the United States' population than ever before. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, since 1900 the percentage of Americans aged 65 and older has tripled, and the older population itself is getting older. The number of older Americans will continue to grow as the baby boom generation grows older and Americans continue to enjoy longer, healthier lives. Older Americans also are healthier than ever before. However, there are still millions of older adults who live with chronic illnesses and must rely upon family, friends and public support systems to help them manage their everyday lives. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Social Security Administration are the leading federal agencies serving the needs of older individuals. Through medical insurance offered by Medicare, public support for long-term care options such as home health care and nursing homes through Medicaid, assistance for family caregivers, nutrition services, grant programs and research into the causes and effects of aging, HHS agencies are striving to support older Americans and to help them lead healthy, active lives. BACKGROUND Today, one in every six Americans, or 45 million people, is 60 years of age or older. In 30 years, more than 89 million Americans will be at least 60 years old, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Many baby boomers, who are now in their late 30s, 40s, and 50s, can expect to live well into their 80s and 90s. Statistics about older Americans are available at

HHS AWARDS $13.7 MILLION TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO PREVENT DIABETES, ASTHMA AND OBESITY
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 12 grants totaling $13.7 million to promote community initiatives to promote better health and prevent disease. The grants are funded under HHS' new Steps to a HealthierUS program, which aims to help Americans live longer, better, and healthier lives by reducing the burden of diabetes, overweight, obesity and asthma and addressing three related risk factors physical inactivity, poor nutrition and tobacco use. The grants will help to implement community action plans targeting border populations, Hispanics and Latinos, Native Americans, African-Americans, Asians, immigrants, low-income populations, the disabled, youth, senior citizens, uninsured and underinsured people and people at high risk. Recipients of the grants reach 23 communities, including one tribal consortium, 15 small cities or rural communities and seven large cities. "To successfully achieve better health, we need to reach Americans in the places they live, work and go to school," Secretary Thompson said. "These twelve Steps grant programs are innovative and exciting. From the Michigan tribe increasing its knowledge of traditional foods like fish, berries and wild rice to the expanded walking program in a New York community, each grantee is using creative approaches tailored to achieve success in their individual community."

Welcome!
The Maryland WIC Program is a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children under 5. About WIC WIC is a federally funded program that provides healthy supplemental foods and nutrition counseling for pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children under age five. The program has an extraordinary 25 year record of preventing children's health problems and improving their long-term health, growth and development. WIC scored second highest in customer satisfaction among 30 high impact government programs in a recent survey. WIC serves over 7.6 million women, infants and children through over 10,000 clinics nationwide. In 2003, Maryland WIC served over 103,000 women, infants and children each month. Effects of WIC Participation on Pregnant Women Numerous studies have shown that pregnant women who participate in WIC have longer pregnancies leading to fewer premature births; have fewer low birth-weight babies; experience fewer fetal and infant deaths; seek prenatal care earlier in pregnancy and consume more of such key nutrients as iron, protein, calcium and vitamin C.
