Lesson 17: "A Map of Things to Come" National Geographic Map Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to:
  • Analyze and interpret mapped information Analyze the effects of urban sprawl on Maryland Describe state government’s efforts to address urban sprawl in the last decade
Core Learning Goals: Geography - The student will demonstrate an understanding of geographic concepts and processes to examine the role of culture, technology, and the environment in the location and distribution of human activities throughout history.
  • The student will evaluate the role of government in addressing land use and other environmental issues.
Materials/Resources: Background: In the 1990s, Maryland government passed legislation to implement a series of programs intended to help control urban sprawl. Collectively these programs, known as the Smart Growth initiative, are aimed at helping to revitalize older communities, redirect growth to already developed areas, and protect Maryland’s natural resources, open spaces and farmland. State funds are used to support projects in Priority Funding Areas (PFAs), which are those areas in the state approved for growth and redevelopment.

Shorelines Calvert Cliffs Tidewater Maryland Assateague Island Maryland's diverse landscape is an expression of her geology. The mountains, valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and dunes, islands and cliffs you see are produced by erosion. Bedrock, soil and sand are sculpted by water, ice and wind over thousands or millions of years to present us with breathtaking vistas throughout the state. Mountains, cliffs and highlands are formed of hard rocks where erosion removes softer surrounding rocks and sediments. Gorges, valley and caves are the result of water grinding or dissolving away softer types of bedrock and sediments. Here we present a virtual tour of some of Maryland's most notable landscapes and geologic features. The feature map shows the approximate location of these features. Mapping and Geographic Information System:
A Bird's Eye View to Our City What is a GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool that combines the visual appeal of conventional maps with database operations and statistical analysis. It is used for mapping and analyzing things that exist and happen on the surface of the Earth by classifying the information into "layers", making it easy for users to distinguish each element separately. The speed and accuracy of a GIS provide an invaluable service to organizations, such as the City of Rockville, by explaining events, predicting outcomes and planning future strategies.
What's a GIS layer?
A layer is a collection of specific elements, such as trees, roads, buildings that can be viewed together with other layers for a complete overview of the area, or separately to give a more specific indication of the presence of that particular element. GIS stores information about the world as a collection of layers that are linked together by geography. As these layers combine with each other, a picture of the real world emerges. This simple but extremely versatile concept is invaluable for solving many real-world problems such as the tracking navigation, managing governmental services, as well as modeling global atmospheric circulation.

Tell the students that the first two items listed would be different for each of us in this room, but the city and state would be the same. Have a student name the city in which they live and have another student name the state in which they live. Write Baltimore and Maryland next to City and State on the board.
