With this I hand to each of you a copy of a map, compiled from the best sources, and which in the main is correct. . . . You all now have the same map, so that no mistakes or confusion need result from different names of localities. MAJ.-GEN. WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN TO DIVISION COMMANDERS, DECEMBER 23, 1862. The geography and map division maintains more than one hundred individual collections that have been acquired through gifts, government transfers, and purchases or assembled by division specialists according to common themes. In addition, the Vault Map Collection includes some three thousand manuscript and rare printed maps that have been filed together for their intrinsic, specially designed vault equipped with temperature and humidity controls. This large manuscript map of the Kingdom of Ethiopia once hung in the palace of His Royal Highness Ras Tafari, later known as Emperor Haile Selassie I. Presented to the Library in 1924 by Homer L. Shantz, who received it personally from Ras Tafari along with "some spears, shields, and coins" while on an official U.S. mission to map African vegetation, it was prepared by the court geographer in Addis Ababa "by order of the Regent" in 1923. His Imperial Majesty was reunited with the map when he viewed it during a visit to the Library of Congress on May 28, 1954, and recalled its presentation to Dr. Shantz thirty years earlier. (Vault Map Collection)
A number of individual rare maps and collections are noteworthy for their association with presidents of the United States, several of whom began their careers as surveyors or displayed some skill as cartographers, such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Millard Fillmore. The collections of two twentieth-century presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, reflect the expanding role of the presidency on the international scene. Other presidents associated with maps in the special collections include John Quincy Adams, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley, James Monroe, and Franklin Roosevelt.

    Geography of Maryland
    Brief Overview
Maryland Geography Maryland is often called "America in Miniature." Why do you think this is true? The state of Maryland is on the east coast of the United States. It's global address is: latitude 39 degrees north, longitude 77 degrees west. There are beaches, mountains, plains, rivers and the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay for Marylanders to enjoy. The mountains in the western part of the state rise to more than 3000 feet above sea level while Eastern Shore Marylanders splash in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some facts about Maryland:
    • Maryland has 9,874 square miles of land area.
    • Maryland's Chesapeake Bay has 1,726 square miles of water.
    • There are 703 square miles of inland water in Maryland.
Maryland is bordered by four other states in the USA. Can you name them? There are only eight other states in the USA that are smaller than Maryland. Maryland has a very unusual shape. The northern boundary of Maryland was in dispute in 1763 and two astronomer- mathematicians were given the job of surveying the dividing line between Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. This boundary line is straight. We call it the "Mason-Dixon Line" and a marker in Delmar is shown in the picture on the left. The other boudary line of Maryland is quite crooked and that's because it follows a river - the Potomac River. In one place the width of the state is so narrow that a person could walk across it and not need to stop and rest. The distance across the state, between West Virginia and Pennsylvania is not much more than a mile. No other state has a width that is so narrow.

State Library Resource Center / Central The Enoch Pratt Library map collection contains over 100,000 maps of various types. It can be reached through the Social Science and History Department. The two most frequently used parts of the collection are the assorted materials stored in the vertical file and the series of topographic map sheets produced by the U.S. Geological Survey. The vertical file is composed of road maps, physical and political maps, historical and thematic maps, and Appalacian Trail maps. Some of these maps do not circulate, but many do circulate particularly road maps. In the topographic map series, Maryland maps receive the heaviest use by far, but patrons commonly request map sheets covering states adjacent to Maryland such as Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Most topographic quadrants do not circulate except for older topographic maps of Maryland and some adjoining states which have been superseded by new editions. Anyone interested in seeing a more detailed explanation of the collection may look at a copy of the Pratt Library Map Guide in the Social Science and History Department of the Central Library.

During this period, the French-Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812 all played a critical role in the development of improved roads in America. The roads identified begin with the King's highway of 1735 from boston to charleton and end with the roads resulting from the War of 1812 in the Old Southwest. the historical events that led to the opening of the Old Northwest and southwest for settlement are discussed to demonstate the importance of the time periods and historical factors that preceded the migrations of Americans. These events are important to understand why and when certain wagon roads became available for the first time. The routes illustrated in thirteen unique maps are important to important to family researchers., Dollarhide, 1997, 41pp $10.00 Atlas of American Indian Affairs, Prucha, 1990, 191pp $50.00

OMB's I-Team initiative pulls together federal, state and local mapping efforts

Despite the widespread use of GIS at the local level, for example, many city and county employees must still submit their census information on paper. "What we're trying to do is provide a mechanism or a means for local and state, and even private-sector, institutions to provide geographic information using common data content standards and effective and efficient business practices," said Ron Matzner, coordinator of the I-Team Initiative. "The ultimate goal is for everybody to develop spatial data so that geographic information can be integrated and shared in a nationally consistent way."
