T his project is developing a Web-based system that includes hierarchical data indexing and organization and processing software modules to support regional and global land cover studies based on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat data sets. The data products generated by this system can be used for environmental studies such as global modeling of climate, the biosphere system, and the carbon cycle. In the future, the repository is expected to contain, in addition, MODIS and Landsat7 data. In 1999, a prototype will be completed and used to generate regional and global data products including a one-kilometer-resolution AVHRR land cover product. The prototype allows users to generate high-level Earth Systems Science data products from low-level satellite data by specifying the processing chain and the output image format. On-demand processing will allow applications to request specialized data products. In addition, the environment will store data on HPSS and use the Active Data Repository. A novel interface will allow multi-layered visualization of multi-sensor satellite data. Implementing HPSS and the University of Maryland's Earth Systems Science data repository and incorporating the SDSC Storage Resource Broker will integrate the repository with NPACI's other data repositories and digital libraries.

An understanding of the contemporary world requires an understanding of geography, that is, of the physical and human systems that drive world events. Geographic concepts also help us think clearly about alternative futures and make us wise decision-makers.
Chicago, Illinois - Sign: "Think globally, Act locally." We teach geography because we are interested in the future. We challenge students to expand their horizons and to "act locally." We believe that a good education in geography will prepare them to participate in the world of the 21st century.
Frederick County, Maryland - On a Maryland billboard appears the command: "Play Pigskin Geography." Geography helps sell newpapers and billboard space. It has become an element of popular culture in today's world. We see the signs of geography's promising future everywhere on the landscape.
Adaptations in the Activity and Residential Patterns of Metropolitian Communities - In "The Contemporary Metropolis" cheap energy encourages sprawl. In "The Future Metropolis" expensive energy encourages mixed use development and dependence on local resources. These maps portray the way the geographer might envision the transition in metropolitan settlement patterns to a more energy-efficient future.

It specifies what students in American schools should learn and be able to do with regard to geography. There are six essential elements of geography into which 18 standards are grouped. ELEMENT 1: THE WORLD IN SPATIAL TERMS Maps, photographs, and satellite images are principal tools for investigating the relationships between people, places, and environments. When information is shown using those tools, it is in a spatial context. The spatial context for geography is the Earth. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 1) How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. (Standard 2) How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context. (Standard 3) How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface.

Race, Geography Factors in Md. Death Penalty Decisions
Published: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 Race affects the way death penalty cases are handled in Maryland, mainly influencing prosecutors' decisions early in the process, says a study from a university criminologist and statistician. The study also finds substantial variations in the way Maryland jurisdictions deal with capital cases.
"Disparities in treatment start at the earliest stages of prosecution," says Raymond Paternoster, the study's principal investigator. "These differences are not exacerbated at trial or actual sentencing phases, but they also don't get corrected then. So disparities persist."
Conducted over two and a half years, this statistical analysis of thousands of public records is the most exhaustive study ever of Maryland's application of the death penalty. The researchers examined records of every homicide prosecution in which the death penalty might have been applied between 1978, when the law took effect, and 1999. They found:
    * By itself, the offender's race does not play a clear role in the way cases are handled, but the victim's race does make a difference. Defendants accused of killing white victims are significantly more likely to face the death penalty than cases with non-white victims.

Maryland - Geography One of the Middle Atlantic states of the United States. It is bounded by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean (E), the District of Columbia (S), Virginia and West Virginia (S, W), and Pennsylvania (N). A seaboard state, E Maryland is divided by Chesapeake Bay, which runs almost to the northern border; thus the region of Maryland called the Eastern Shore is separated from the main part of the state and is dominated by the bay. For the most part, the erratic course of the Potomac River separates the main part of Maryland from Virginia (to the south) and the long, narrow western handle from West Virginia (to the south and west). The District of Columbia cuts a rectangular indentation into the state just below the falls of the Potomac. The main part of the state is divided by the fall line, which runs between the upper end of Chesapeake Bay and Washington, D.C.; to the north and west is the rolling Piedmont, rising to the Blue Ridge and to the Pennsylvania hills. The heavily indented shores of Chesapeake Bay fringe the land with bays and estuaries, which helped in the development of a farm economy relying on water transport. Flourishing in the mild winters and hot summers of the coastal plains are typically southern trees, such as the loblolly pine and the magnolia, while the cooler uplands have woods of black and white oak and beech. Maryland has nearly 3 million acres (l.2 million hectares) of forest land.
