THE MARYLAND PROVINCE COLLECTION
This collection was gathered from material that had been scattered inthe Georgetown archives, but that pertained to different aspects of theMaryland Province of Jesuits; particularly, there is emphasis on thegeographical locations of Jesuit activity in or near Maryland. Geography isthe general organizational principalby university, college, seminary, manor, mission, or novitiate location. Jesuits of the province operated anumber of parishes, some of which later were transferred to the secularclergy. These account for many of the geographical locations. In addition, certain locations of major Jesuit installations figure more frequently, andthose tend to include larger quantities of papers and archival material. In understanding the collection two difficulties intrude: the first isthat places are sometimes referred to by the geographical name (PortTobacco or Bel Alton), sometimes by the formal name (St. Thomas Manor); thesecond is that Jesuit organization in what is now the northeastern part ofthe United States was first a mission (1634-1833), then Maryland Province(1833-1880), then Maryland-New York Province (1880-ca. 1975), and thenreduced in geographical scope as New York was separated from it. Forconsistency through these administrative evolutions and varying titles, thecollection is called simply the Maryland Province Collection (MD PROVCOLL), and is divided into series which correspond to geographicallocations. Geographically-related smaller missions are grouped into aseries. For a map and brief organizational history, see "Atlas GeographicusSocietatis Jesu" (Paris, 1900), "Provincia Marylandiae-Neo Eboracensis."

Geography
Located midway along the eastern seaboard of the United States, south of Maryland, north of Virginia and 233 miles south of New York City, the Washington, DC metropolitan area refers to the District of Columbia, plus 7 Maryland counties (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's), 5 Virginia counties (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William and Stafford) and 5 Virginia cities (Alexandria, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park).
The District of Columbia is 67 square miles and divided into 4 quadrants: Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and Southeast. The U.S. Capitol building marks the center where the quadrants meet. Numbered streets run north-south. Lettered streets run east-west (there are no J, X, Y or Z streets), becoming 2-syllable names, then 3-syllable names as you travel farther out from the center. Avenues named for U.S. states run diagonally, often meeting at traffic circles and squares. Elevation in Washington DC highest is 420 feet; lowest is sea level.

Mapping and Geographic Information System:
A Bird's Eye View to Our City What is a GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool that combines the visual appeal of conventional maps with database operations and statistical analysis. It is used for mapping and analyzing things that exist and happen on the surface of the Earth by classifying the information into "layers", making it easy for users to distinguish each element separately. The speed and accuracy of a GIS provide an invaluable service to organizations, such as the City of Rockville, by explaining events, predicting outcomes and planning future strategies.
What's a GIS layer?
A layer is a collection of specific elements, such as trees, roads, buildings that can be viewed together with other layers for a complete overview of the area, or separately to give a more specific indication of the presence of that particular element. GIS stores information about the world as a collection of layers that are linked together by geography. As these layers combine with each other, a picture of the real world emerges. This simple but extremely versatile concept is invaluable for solving many real-world problems such as the tracking navigation, managing governmental services, as well as modeling global atmospheric circulation.

Maryland Department of Planning
Geographic Information System Products and Services
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are the computer hardware and software used to store, manipulate, analyze and display map-referenced geographic data. Within the Maryland Department of Planning, GIS has been an indispensable tool for the agency's work related to growth management, redistricting and the analysis of census data for government and business applications. The Geographic Information Systems Unit maintains the computer mapping software that combines socio-economic and land use data to enhance and assist growth management activities across the State. The Unit develops and disseminates specialized computer maps depicting a variety of planning and business related information. Map Prints Available: Maps of Census Geography
Maps of Political Geography

There are four map sets available. They are Congressional Districts - Street Map Base and Precinct Map Base, and Legislative Districts - Street Map Base and Precinct Map Base. The scale of the maps are 1:100,000 except Baltimore City which is 1:24,000 scale. Available Digital Data: Census Mapping Boundary Files
High resolution satellite imagery is being used to identify areas of landuse change. Changes are verified by local planning officials and then incorporated into the Department of Planning's Land Use/Land Cover Database for Maryland. From this database, maps, statistics and studies related to growth management and resource protection are being completed.
