Geography People Government ... Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] One of the original 13 states to join the Union (in 1788), Maryland is in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard. It's believed that Lord Baltimore, who received a charter for the land in 1632, named the state after Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I. The Mason and Dixon line was drawn in the 1760s to settle a dispute between the Penn and Calvert families. In addition to marking the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland, it is the traditional boundary between the North and the South. Maryland is known as the "Free State"; its flower is the black-eyed susan; and its capital is Annapolis, home of the U.S. Naval Academy. February 1997 GBC REPORT ON GAMING: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Background
During the last 18 months, the Greater Baltimore Committee has been examining the issues related to gaming. We began before there were any specific proposals before the Maryland General Assembly. We thought that it was important to have a factual basis for any position that we might take. Toward that end, the GBC commissioned two separate studies to assist the work of the GBC's Policy Study Group that was charged with giving advice to our Board of Directors. One study, conducted by Hunter Associates, Inc., examined the economic impact of various gaming options that might be considered in Maryland. The second study, conducted by Dr. Peter Reuter of the University of Maryland, looked at the potential social costs associated with gaming. When we began our review of gaming, the GBC did not intend to make a proposal for or against new forms of gaming in Maryland. Our intention, instead, was to be prepared to enter the debate, should there be a specific and serious effort to expand gaming. Our primary motivation in studying gaming was to be sure that, in any consideration, the best interests of the Baltimore region were taken into account. There have been indications that legislation to authorize slots at racetracks will be introduced and seriously considered this year in the General Assembly. In light of this, and the substantial study that the GBC has given the gaming issue, we offer the results of our study and an alternative approach to gaming.

The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

is one of the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast. Its entire Western border is in the Appalachian mountians, which run from Southwest to Northeast. Approaching from the ocean, one would enter the great port city of Norfolk , first passing its even more populous suburb, Virginia Beach. Neighboring cities include Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth and Chesapeake . This area is generally called Hampton Roads. It is also known as the Tidewater, together with everything east of Washington and Richmond.
(Bear in mind that lawyers in Virginia typically practice in several counties and cities.)
Two hours West of Norfolk is Richmond , the capital. Two hours Northwest of Richmond is Charlottesville , just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Thomas Jefferson lived near there. Beyond these mountains lies the great Shennandoah Valley , and then the Allegheny mountains and desolateWest Virginia, a completely separate State which is not affiliated in any way with Virginia.
Two hours North of Richmond, Washington, D.C., the U.S.'s capital, lies in an independent district between Virginia and Maryland.

Research Assistant (ESRC), University of Bristol, England. Research Interests and current projects My research focuses on new theoretical directions in Human Geography, drawn from the sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. Over the past decade I have been attempting to construct a new way of doing Human Geography, which I have come to call Poststructuralist Geography. My main sources of inspiration have been recent developments in critical human geography-such as structural Marxism, actor-network theory, and post-positivist spatial science-, twentieth-century continental philosophy, and social and cultural theory. I have been especially inspired by the innovative spatial practices of writers such as Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, and Jean-François Lyotard. Their reconceptualization of spatiality, temporality, and the taking place of events has enabled me to develop a theoretical practice that permits new kinds of geography which I hope are interesting, important, and effective.

    Geography Of Welfare Is Changing
Big Cities' Rising Burden Shows Limits of Reform
By Amy Goldstein Washington Post Staff Writer
    Welfare Burdens Shifting to Cities
As welfare rolls have plummeted in recent years, families that still rely on government assistance are increasingly concentrated in big cities, according to a new study, which cautions that welfare reform is failing to ease the burden of poverty on urban America. Nearly three in five people on welfare can be found in the 100 largest U.S. citieseven though they contain just one-third of the nation's populationbecause people there are being weaned from assistance more slowly than in most suburban and rural communities. The findings, to be released tomorrow by the Brookings Institution, are the latest signs of how the face of welfare has changed in the four years since the federal government replaced the traditional welfare safety net with a state-run system that pays temporary benefits and steers people toward jobs. The evidence that welfare recipients are becoming clustered in big cities follows other recent findings that the program is becoming racially isolated, with African Americans and Hispanics accounting for a growing share of the families who remain on the rolls. These trends have significant implications. In two years, Congress must decide what to do when the bill that overhauled the welfare system is due to expire. Already, there is political pressure to curtail the amount of money the government allots to states to help welfare recipients prepare forand keepjobs.
