District of Columbia (geography)
Apart from its role as capital of the US, the District of Columbia , or Washington , can also be described by its own historical, municipal, and physical geographic characteristics, many of which aren't well documented. The term "Washington" is often used for the city including the parts in Maryland and Virginia , while there is still the notion of the District being a distinct entity within that city, as most residents refer to the area simply as " D.C. ". The area is 159 sq. km (98.5 sq. miles).
History
The district has several distinct historic neighborhoods, which include Georgetown Tenleytown Capitol Hill Anacostia , and Congress Heights . Out of these neighborhoods, Georgetown was originally an incorporated city of the State of Maryland The District of Columbia originally also included land from the State of Virginia , but this land was returned in . This land in Virginia makes up the modern cities of Arlington and the old part of Alexandria, Virginia

History
Baltimore was founded on July 30 . Baltimore grew swiftly in the mid-late 18th century as the granary for sugar producing colonies in the Caribbean . The value of sugar encouraged the maximum possible cultivation of cane and the importation of food. The relatively shorter distance between Baltimore and the Caribbean colonies allowed swift transport and minimized the spoilage of flour Baltimore's harbor is the location of Fort McHenry , which came under attack by British forces in the War of 1812 and whose defense inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem, "

Maryland. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Maryland, the "Free State" "Old Line State"
    Abbreviation:
MD It's believed that Lord Baltimore, who received a charter for the land in 1632, named the state after Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I. One of the original 13 states to join the Union (in 1788), Maryland is in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard. The Mason and Dixon line - marking the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland - was drawn in the 1760s to settle a dispute between the Penn and Calvert families. In addition it is the traditional boundary between the North and the South. Chesapeake Bay, which cuts deep into Maryland, provides the state with several excellent harbors including Baltimore and Annapolis, the home of the United States Naval Academy. The long Chesapeake Bay shoreline offers opportunities for boating, fishing and swimming. Old mansions and historic sites throughout the state appeal to visitors. One of Maryland's most famous annual events is the Preakness Stakes, a horse race run each May at the Pimlico race track in Baltimore.
