    Geography
A seaboard state, E Maryland is divided by Chesapeake Bay, which runs almost to the northern border; thus the region of Maryland called the Eastern Shore is separated from the main part of the state and is dominated by the bay. For the most part, the erratic course of the Potomac River separates the main part of Maryland from Virginia (to the south) and the long, narrow western handle from West Virginia (to the south and west). The District of Columbia cuts a rectangular indentation into the state just below the falls of the Potomac. The main part of the state is divided by the fall line, which runs between the upper end of Chesapeake Bay and Washington, D.C.; to the north and west is the rolling Piedmont, rising to the Blue Ridge and to the Pennsylvania hills. The heavily indented shores of Chesapeake Bay fringe the land with bays and estuaries, which helped in the development of a farm economy relying on water transport. Flourishing in the mild winters and hot summers of the coastal plains are typically southern trees, such as the loblolly pine and the magnolia, while the cooler uplands have woods of black and white oak and beech. Maryland has nearly 3 million acres (l.2 million hectares) of forest land.

Geography of Maryland
Brief Overview
Maryland Geography Maryland is often called "America in Miniature." Why do you think this is true? The state of Maryland is on the east coast of the United States. It's global address is: latitude 39 degrees north, longitude 77 degrees west. There are beaches, mountains, plains, rivers and the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay for Marylanders to enjoy. The mountains in the western part of the state rise to more than 3000 feet above sea level while Eastern Shore Marylanders splash in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some facts about Maryland:
  • Maryland has 9,874 square miles of land area.
  • Maryland's Chesapeake Bay has 1,726 square miles of water.
  • There are 703 square miles of inland water in Maryland.
Maryland is bordered by four other states in the USA. Can you name them? There are only eight other states in the USA that are smaller than Maryland. Maryland has a very unusual shape. The northern boundary of Maryland was in dispute in 1763 and two astronomer- mathematicians were given the job of surveying the dividing line between Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. This boundary line is straight. We call it the "Mason-Dixon Line" and a marker in Delmar is shown in the picture on the left. The other boudary line of Maryland is quite crooked and that's because it follows a river - the Potomac River. In one place the width of the state is so narrow that a person could walk across it and not need to stop and rest. The distance across the state, between West Virginia and Pennsylvania is not much more than a mile. No other state has a width that is so narrow.

Discussion of Maryland Geography
by: Leslie, Megan and Jeremy
From Leslie: Mrs. Weeg,
Yes, I have been very busy with my homework. Me and my dad have been working on these questions. I think that MD is called America in Miniture because it has everything that all the country has, in Geography that is. The four states that border MD are Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvaina, and West Virginia. Calvert Cliffs help Geologists study by the fossils and everything. It is called Delmarva because of the 3 states (Maryland, Delaware, and Virigina.). Man is changing the Cheasapeake bay by littering and it kills the fish. That is why they have a limit on Rock Fish and are thinking about putting one on the Blue Crab. Well I don't like high school a lot. Tonight it took me a couple of hours! Oh well. I'll see ya later!:) Leslie From Mrs Weeg: Leslie... thanks for your answers. You say that Maryland has a little bit of "everything that all the country has." Can you explain that a little more for Olya, Michael and David? They have never been to Maryland or to the United States. Jeremy, Elizabeth (Beth) and Megan, you can answer that too if you like. From Megan:
1. Man is changing the Chesapeake Bay by draining some parts of it to make more farmland. Man is also poluting the air and the water around and in the Chesapeake Bay which is killing plants and animals. Last of all man is also dropping the fish and crab population. 2. We can help save the bay by stop draining parts of the bay for farmland. We can stop poluting the air and water around and in the Chesapeake Bay. Last we can also limit the fishing and crabing.

Climate and Topography Studies Scientists studying climate and topography in the University of Maryland’s geography department are working in collaboration with NASA to provide maps of forest vegetation canopy. The Vegetation Canopy Lidar (VCL) spacecraft, uses a new type of laser technology that will provide researchers with maps of forest vegetation throughout the world. The VCL mission is a University of Maryland run program led by geographer Ralph Dubayah. This project has an immediate educational component in that University of Maryland students will control the satellite in orbit and evaluate the results. This new technology will provide researchers with information such as the height, weight and density of trees. This information will allow researchers to study the effects of deforestation on the earth’s atmosphere. Researchers will also be able to engage in climate modeling and to study global warming through assessing the amount of carbon stored in the world’s forests. Data from the mission will be stored in a database at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Eros Data Center where it will be accessible to scientists around the world utilizing high performance networks like the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX).
