DEV: Ted [Edward D.] Harris [a rheumatologist, former medical staff president and former medicine chair] is interested in developing a tactile program that would allow physicians or students to "feel" various stages of damage and pathologies. The stiffness on a hand-held mouse device would change depending on the extent of the arthritis programmed into the system. This would be a wonderful tool to help practicing physicians understand the arthritic process. Ted Harris can feel a wrist and know exactly what is going on. A less-experienced physician could benefit from learning what Dr. Harris feels. HEINRICHS: Q: What else?

CSM Policy on Disclosure of Student Records
What is FERPA? FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. It is commonly known as the Buckley Amendment. The Act, and regulations implemented by the Department of Education, regulates the dissemination of student educational records at all colleges and universities that receive federal funds. What rights do students have under FERPA? What are the types of student records CSM keeps? What is Directory Information? How do I request that information not be disclosed?
What rights do students have under FERPA? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. They are:
  • The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of the day that the College of Southern Maryland receives a request for access. Students should submit to the Registrar written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect. The Registrar will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes is inaccurate or misleading. Students may ask the Registrar to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. The student should write the Registrar, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the Registrar decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the Registrar will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of his or her right to appeal the decision. Students wishing to appeal a decision should follow the General Student Complaint Procedure found in the Student Handbook. FERPA does not address issues involved with assigning grades for academic work. Students interested in appealing grades should follow the Reevaluation of Academic Work procedure found in the Student Handbook.

This plan is for all library staff to develop the skills needed to become members of teams and to improve the way the Libraries operate as an organization. The Learning Curriculum is unusual and innovative in its comprehensiveness and ongoing nature. It has ten components, which in turn include a number of modules, for a total of approximately 150 contact hours. Concepts included in the Learning Curriculum encompass: Development of the Organization, Defining Customer Service, Development of Self, Teams and Workgroups, Exploring Leadership and Followership, and Leadership Development. It is one of only three "coherent curricula" currently existing in research libraries nationwide, as identified by the Association of Research Libraries' Leadership Committee. The other curricula are found at the University of Minnesota Libraries and the University of Tennessee Libraries.

ATTENDANCE DURING STAFF DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS Administrative Procedure Staff development activities will continue to play an increasingly important role in keeping staff up to date on the most recent curricular and instructional developments. As such, attendance at these activities is considered mandatory unless attendance is waived by the building principal. In order to carry out this procedure, building principals are to utilize the following guidelines:
  • Requests for a waiver of attendance at a staff development activity must be made to the building principal prior to such activity.
  • In considering such a waiver request the building principal will have to determine whether an emergency condition exists.
  • Should the building principal grant such a waiver, the principal is to notify the Assistant Superintendent in Curriculum and Instruction and so note on the payroll record.
  • The building principal is to monitor staff attendance at staff development activities.
