Welcome to New Dominion - Let us take you on a tour.
Located in the mountains of western Maryland, New Dominion School of Maryland provides residential treatment care for boys 11-17 years of age. Established in 1980, New Dominion School assists teenagers in taking positive control of their lives, realizing their self-worth, developing self confidence and motivation to succeed both socially and academically. Operating on a year round basis, the program is structured around a natural environment that is well-disciplined, nurturing, optimistic, and conducive to bringing out the fullest potential of each youth. Treatment and education are interrelated. As a student builds self confidence and problem solving skills, he learns to take responsibility for himself and his education.
Program Description
Within the framework of New Dominion's outdoor treatment program, intervention is based on a group process problem-solving model. Students' difficulties in relating to others are not diagnosed and treated in isolation from their daily actions. Instead, problems are dealt with on the spot as they occur. Group meetings are held at any time during the day when a problem arises. In addition, there are regular evening group sessions. During group meetings, students receive the help and support of their group to learn more acceptable behavior, to express emotions appropriately, and to resolve problems productively. Motivation on the part of the student is high because he is meeting primary needs and is experiencing both the positive and negative results of his behavior immediately or soon after his actions.

What is Diabetes Self-Management Education? Diabetes self-management education (DSME) is learning the skills needed to manage your diabetes and control your blood sugar every day. When you keep your blood sugar in control, risk for getting complications of diabetes can be reduced. In DSME classes, the person with diabetes learns how what they eat, what medication they take, exercise, and emotions can affect the blood sugar. The skills learned allows the person with diabetes to achieve a balance of these factors and keep the blood sugar in control every day.
DSME is more than attending a class. It includes time with a diabetes educator and a dietitian. These diabetes professionals help the individual to devise a plan that meets his/her particular needs and preferences.

    By Lori Montgomery
    Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, January 22, 2004; Page B01 Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. proposed a $23.8 billion budget yesterday that would raise taxes on certain corporations, slash aid to local governments and slow spending on Medicaid while devoting substantial new resources to public schools, drug treatment and pay raises for state workers. Despite a projected $700 million revenue shortfall, Ehrlich (R) is proposing for the second year in a row to balance the budget without a general tax increase or a raid on the state's reserve fund. Instead, Ehrlich wants to borrow nearly $400 million from various state accounts, much of which would ordinarily go to Maryland counties for transportation projects and other uses. Ehrlich's budget also calls for more than $180 million in new revenue, including additional taxes on out-of-state residents who work in Maryland and on corporations that avoid Maryland taxes by transferring a portion of their income to Delaware subsidiaries. Last year, Ehrlich vetoed a bill that would have closed the so-called Delaware loophole. But courts have since ruled that Maryland is entitled to the cash, and Ehrlich is preparing legislation to close the loophole.

    SUPPORT MARYLAND HIGHER EDUCATION
Maryland Colleges and universities are in serious trouble and need our help. This year Maryland higher education institutions are in danger of receiving debilitating fiscal cuts from the Maryland General Assembly. Though higher education represents only 7.5% of the total state budget, it has already sustained one third of all the cuts from the general fund. Now there is a movement afoot to cut our budget even further. They need our help in Annapolis. Please click here: http://www.supporthighereducation.com/petitionfrm.html to sign a virtual petition telling Annapolis "NO MORE CUTS TO HIGHER EDUCATION!"

Here's another education rant but don't worry - this one's teensy-weensy compared to my page on Maryland's insane MSPAP test. I know Maryland state leaders and educators could not possibly discern the angry sarcasm and fathom the points I try to make in my "letter to the editor" below, but maybe it will give other states pause before going cuckoo like Maryland. My letter responds to an article which appeared in the Prince George's County Gazette newspapers: "[Governor] Glendening signs school board restructuring bill, 130 others" (May 9 2002). One section said: "The so-called Thornton Commission plan to increase [state] education spending by $1.3 billion a year after a six-year phase-in period is among the most expensive bills ever passed by the legislature. It includes a 34-cents-a-pack cigarette tax hike on June 1 [2002] that will generate about $100 million this year and $70 million a year in future years - not nearly enough to pay for the long-term costs of the plan. "The Thornton law will force local school boards to offer all-day kindergarten in all schools by the 2007-2008 school year and provide pre-school services for at-risk 4-year-olds."
