In Maryland, executive commissions, committees, task forces, and advisory boards are created or authorized by action of the Governor or General Assembly. Often, these boards are assigned a specific responsibility or area of inquiry. Through special study boards, the Governor draws upon the expertise of private citizens and public servants to help solve problems of government. Many of these boards must complete their work by a prescribed date. Others are ongoing. They may receive staff or other administrative support from an executive department or agency. Interagency committees and councils often are formed to coordinate the work of government agencies in a particular field. Maryland has over 40 miles of shoreline from its border with Virginia near the southern end of Assateague Island to the Delaware border. Building density along the shoreline ranges from the heavy development of Ocean City to the undeveloped beaches on Assateague Island. Although Ocean City is by far the largest tourist attraction on the Maryland shore, Assateague Island State and Federal Parks also bring large numbers of visitors. Maintenance of beaches is a high priority with Maryland. Since 1988, over ten million cubic yards of sand has been placed on the beaches from Ocean City northward to the Delaware line. In addition, the U.S. Army Corps Engineers (USACE) and the National Park Service recently completed restoration work on Assateague Island beaches. The State estimates that there will not be enough sand inside the three-mile limit to supply future beach restoration projects.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the Baltimore Ecosystem Study 1. What is an ecosystem?
2. How is a city an ecosystem?

3. Why is this research so novel?

4. Why is research over long periods important to ecosystem ecology?
...
15. Why are Dr. Pickett and the Institute of Ecosystem Studies taking a leading role in this project?

What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is an area where living things interact with each other and their physical and chemical environment. How is a city an ecosystem? There are the same basic kinds of interactions in cities as in other ecosystems. But those interactions are greatly affected not only by the structures that people have built and the energy they import, but also by people’s cultures, behaviors, social organization and economy. So cities are just a somewhat more complicated kind of ecosystem, and new interactions among researchers will be required to understand cities as ecosystems. Ecologists, social scientists, economists, and engineers are all involved, along with city, county, state and national agencies. Interactions with the citizens and with community groups is also a big part of the success of an urban ecosystem study. Why is this research so novel?

48. The Story Of State-Mandated Mentoring In Maryland
a significant view into mentoring in the state because the school districts in Marylandare all countywide, with the exception of Baltimore City Schools.
http://www.teachermentors.com/MCenter Site/StateStories/Maryland.html
Maryland Updated on November 23, 1998 Maryland The only mentoring and new teacher support in Maryland during most of the 1980's was a series of individual program efforts carried out on a voluntary basis by local school districts. In the Maryland State Dept. of Education and the area's regional lab (Research for Better Schools) conducted a research study on existing approaches to support of new teachers being used in the state. See Meister, G. (1987). "Current Practices in New Teacher Development in Maryland". MSDE and Research for Better Schools. During that same year, in an effort to inform the practices of existing programs and to support development of new programs, the same partnership also conducted and published a review of the mentoring literature and existing program models. See Newcombe, E. (1987). "Perspectives on Teacher Induction: A Review of the Literature and Promising Program Models". Baltimore, MD. MSDE and Research for Better Schools. Also in the state funded a pilot induction program in 5 school districts called the "Exemplary Programs Project". This pilot used the state's "Maryland Teacher Competencies" and the "Maryland Competency Observation Instrument. See Maryland State Dept. of Education. 1087). "A Manual for Classroom Observers: Maryland Teaching". Baltimore, MD: Maryland State Dept. of Education, for details about the state's competencies and instrument. An excellent review of the extent of mentoring programs in Maryland was published in

The goal of the project is to develop a data base in which natural resources and biological information (including hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality); bibliographic references; contacts, programs and activity descriptions; and other data can coexist and be easily obtained for watershed management, planning, and natural resource conservation programs and projects. What types of information will be included?

Planning and Studies
As design professionals, we have an objective, unbiased, and creative way of looking at things, and are often called upon to perform specialized studies to evaluate needs. Often these go well beyond facilities alone and will look at larger management objectives. These may be economic, strategic growth planning, feasibility studies, and other unique evaluations.
The nature of these studies can range from a comprehensive look at the total operations of 33 volunteer fire company stations in Baltimore County, to an analysis of 1.8 million square feet of residential living space for the University of Maryland at College Park.
Another specialized area of expertise in the firm is the area of energy analysis and green architecture. The firm remains a pioneer in environmental planning, studies, and design.
