Collected Thoughts of a Priest Headmaster D. Stuart Dunnan
About the Author

Appointed Headmaster of Saint James School in June of 1992 when he was only 33 years old, the Revd. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan has presided over a remarkable revival of this historic Episcopal boarding school in Western Maryland. A teacher and chaplain at both the school and university levels before he came to Saint James, he is one of the few Episcopal priests still serving as the head of a secondary school in the United States. He is also one of a decreasing number of independent school heads to serve the same school for more than five years, in his case, ten and counting.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Father Dunnan holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in history from Harvard University and a masters and a doctoral degree in theology from Oxford University in England. As an educator and preacher, he is particularly interested in the moral and spiritual formation of teenagers, and thus eager to "encourage their goodness" and to "challenge their selfishness" within the context of their actual lives.
At a time when many Episcopal schools have developed away from their church identities, some boarding schools have become day schools, and most secondary schools have grown larger, Father Dunnan has strengthened the church identity of Saint James, restored its boarding program, and preserved its smaller size, while also increasing its diversity and improving the quality of its academic and extracurricular programs. In doing this, he has developed a strong apology for Episcopal schools, for boarding schools, and for smaller, more focused secondary school communities. In all three ways, his argument is distinct, and he provides a uniquely encouraging perspective for secondary school educators and for parents of teenagers in America today.

Home Involvement Activism Publications ... Resources "Including students as representatives on boards and committees takes classroom learning into the community and opens the door for many more students to become involved in the policies and practices that shape their schools." Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster Students on School Boards of Education Resource Guide Second Edition, August 2003 Created for www.SoundOut.org Description A multi-topic resource guide promoting Student Voice, Participation, Engagement, Involvement, and Representation on Local, District, Regional, and State Boards of Education. Includes research, examples, and other resources for students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members who support validating student voice in school decision-making by including students on school boards. For more information on students as education decision-makers, click here Introduction STUDENT participation on boards of education is a small part of a much larger movement towards meaningful student involvement throughout education. Since the 1960s the effort to promote student representation has waxed and waned, according to the will of school officials and the sincere interest of students involved. Today that tide is turning, and students across the US are calling for deepened engagement in the decision-making that affects them on all levels - in the classroom, in the auditorium, and in the boardroom. This guide can also serve students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members around the nation as they lobby for student participation on school boards of education.

When you think of boarding school most people think about being on lock down, a strenuous workload, and uniforms. But it's exactly the opposite, its lots of fun. I would know on a first hand basis because I go to an all girls prep school in Baltimore Maryland, named Oldfields School.
The only thing I sometimes dislike about my school is that its four hours away from home, in New York City. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Its just that sometimes when I get a little homesick I wish I can just leave for a little while and come back. Oldfields on the whole is a very good school. It was like the groundbreaker for all the things I've always wanted to experience. I have two more years left at Oldfields and I hope to make the best of it. We seek to do this within a small and familial residential community which values the moral and spiritual development of our students. Throughout its history, Saint James has remained committed to the precepts of sound mind and body, emphasizing the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and moral development of each student through challenging academics, daily athletics, extensive activities, and community service. At the start of each academic day, the entire School gathers for Chapel, providing an opportunity for thought and reflection for faculty and students of all faith traditions. Simultaneously challenged and supported, Saint James students study a traditional core curriculum, which provides a solid foundation for strong academic achievement at the collegiate level.

    Miss Mary Blades

Mary Blades was born in 1814 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She came to St. Mary's County in the 1840s, initially as the tutor for Dr. and Mrs. Briscoe's children. In 1846, the St. Mary's Seminary (the predecessor of St. Mary's College of Maryland) was founded, and Miss Blades was offered a teaching job, which she declined due to the low salary. At about the same time, Dr. Briscoe established a boarding school on Sotterley property with Mary Blades as teacher. The census indicates that Mary Blades was still a resident of Sotterley in 1850, and 7 of Dr. Briscoe's children and 4 boarders were attending the school. Miss Blades would teach the usual geography, grammar, and history to young girls (as young as ten) who would come from Calvert and Charles Counties. But it has also been said that Miss Blades would often talk about interesting books she had been given to read by the rector of the local Parish. Mrs. Kate Thomas, who attended the school, remembers maintaining a beautiful garden outside the small classroom in Sotterley's front yard. She also recalls one of her classmates, a Miss Susie Harris, who learned to play the comb, and dance the very popular steps of the day. The girls had quite a lot of fun amusing themselves with music and dancing, a pastime Dr. Briscoe found foolish.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.

Over the decades, Severn has changed remarkablythe addition of a Middle School, the admittance of young women, the departure of boarding students, the construction of new fields and buildingsbut the dedication of each headmaster and the Board of Trustees to the original guiding ideals has not changed. It exists to inspire in its students a passion for learning, a commitment to personal excellence and integrity, and a sense of social responsibility.
    Philosophy
Severn School believes in educating the whole person in a student-centered school community. Severn holds the dignity, self-worth, and potential of each individual in high regard. In a complex and changing world, Severn values industrious effort and these enduring principles:

Alumni Profile Storyteller: Kimberly Ayers ’75
    by Vince Watchorn
Kimberly Ayers ’75 says she has the best job in television.
She just does what she’s always done and has always been interested in: she tells peoples’ stories, learning more about the world and herself as she works. A reporter and story producer for the National Geographic Channel’s National Geographic Today since November 2001, Kimberly looks at the world as a set of constantly converging cultures revealed through stories about their histories and futures.
Recently, those stories have included a five-part series on California Route 1, and another entitled “Hidden Hawaii.” In response to September’s World Trade Center tragedy, she produced a photo essay called “Faces of Fear.” Recently, she was producing two stories about Tibet: the photos of National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry (who took the famous picture of the Afghan girl) on Lhasa, the capital, and a piece on a new nature preserve at the foot of Mt. Everest.
Kimberly’s sense of her craft dictates that stories aren’t mere anecdotes or vignettes, but clues and pathways to our cultural identities. “We always have one foot in our home culture, but we’re touched by so many others.” Examining different places in the world shows a broader perspective, she says, allowing us to “make sense of social and political conflicts between cultures, and to find oneness amongst vast difference.”
