He started boxing at the age of four when his father, Gregory Doyle (a Korean War veteran who boxed for the Canadian Armed Forces and an Irish Stick Fighting expert) bought him his first pair of boxing gloves. Glen boxed until age 12 when he began a quest to find a martial art that was more suited for his size and weight. During this time he experimented with Aikido, Hap Ki Do, Tae Kwon Do, and military hand-to-hand combat. His quest ended in 1983 when he began studying Hung Gar Gung Fu with Sifu James Lore at the

(Redirected from Martial arts
Martial arts , also known as fighting systems , are bodies of codified practices or traditions of unarmed and armed combat , usually without the use of guns and other modern weapons. They are often taught today with the goal of developing both the character of the practitioner and the mindful, appropriate, controlled use of bodily force. The martial arts, perhaps due to a half-century of dramatic portrayals in popular media (see orientalism ), have been inextricably bound in the Western imagination to East Asian cultures and people. Martial arts are by no means unique to Asia , however. Humans around the world have always had to develop ways to defend themselves from attack, often without weapons. As a result, there are many martial arts known and practiced; for further information on a particular art, see the list of martial arts "Martial arts" was translated in 1920 in Takenobu's Japanese-English Dictionary from Japanese bu-gei or bu-jutsu military affairs". This definition is translated directly from the Chinese term

AN INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS
By Liang Shouyu Translated by Bill Chen and Mike Sigman Please bear in mind that "Wushu" translates to "martial arts" in general in this context, and does not imply the negative connotation of empty showmanship that some "wushu" may have gained. [In this version, I have changed the Chinese romanization to consistent Pinyin style. TWC]
INTRODUCTION TO WUSHU
Martial arts or Wushu, have been created and developed for self-defense and survival throughout human history. Correct Chinese Wushu training improves physical ability, health, and willpower; it gives an individual an excellent method of exercise, a personal art form, a competitive sport, and a basis for self-defense and sparring. Total martial training includes Ti (kicking), Da (punching), Shuai (throwing), Na (controlling), Gi (hitting), Ci (thrusting), etc. Related to each style are basic forms, or sequences, which may involve defense strategies, offense, retreat, mobility and immobility, speed and slowness, hard or soft postures, emptiness and fullness, with or without weapons. Other training will include practical defense using that particular style, defense simulation such as two-man choreographed sequences for beginning contact training. There are also internal and external body training methods to strengthen the body to withstand strikes and blows. In the advanced stages of training, a student begins full-contact training by sparring with semi-control in order to add realism to the training.

About Us A - Z Site Map Top Pages ... Posters by BD The term martial arts refers to a variety of traditional Asian combat techniques. These ancient fighting methods are practiced today for self-defense, physical and spiritual fitness, law enforcement, recreation and competition. Although many traditions of the original teachers of the martial arts live on, the styles and techniques are often adapted to fit modern life and cultures. The origins of the Asian styles of martial arts are shadowed in mystery as they were commonly practiced in secret and were often developed, taught and refined by people in religious orders. The Asian fighting methods are believed to have been introduced into China from Tibet and India, where they were used by monks as a means of protection and physical fitness. Over the centuries, the techniques were refined and expanded, giving birth to new forms of fighting, which were then spread into other parts of Asia.

Martial arts sports versus combative styles
How much credibility does your instructor really have?
by Don Cunningham I have occasionally been asked why I studied judo and kendo when I obviously have a deep interest in the more historical Japanese martial practices of jujutsu and kenjutsu . Aside from mundane issues like spare time or limited access, the principal reason is the traditional Japanese martial arts as taught today have a serious lack of credibility. At the risk of being overly simplistic, the primary goals of martial arts study can generally be classified into three areas. The most popular objective today is sports competition, to win against others in organized contests. Many others study martial arts to enhance various other aspects of their personal lives, to develop both physical and emotional qualities. Ironically, the least common reason today was likely the original historical objective, that is, to kill or maim an opponent. Organized competitions have been around a long time. The Japanese certainly don’t have any monopoly on combative sports, either. Greco-roman style wrestling was one of the first Olympic events in ancient Greece. Boxing was popular long before the Marquis of Queensbury established standard regulations. In Japan

    By: UCMAP Executive Staff
    Date: August 1997
    Overview:
The U.C. Martial Arts Program is always interested in incorporating new martial arts clubs into its family. Due to the very high number of requests that we have received it is impossible for our program to accept everyone. The following document outlines our requirements for accepting a new club into our program.
    New Club Requirements:
At present UCMAP has a total of six active clubs. These clubs are Hapkido, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Tai Chi and Wushu. The following is an outline of the requirements a new club must meet before it will be considered for admission to UCMAP. All applications for starting a new club must be submitted in writing to UCMAP's Technical Director.

Martial arts instructor says students learn much more than self defense
VICTORIA MARTY Associated Press HENDERSON, Ky. Her fists clenched, Sheara May punched the air in short staccato movements, defending herself against an attacker that at that moment was more in her head than right in front of her. The Central Learning Center freshman may have been imagining a confrontation, but her smile never left her face. Most of the sweat dripping down her face and body was hidden by her white Tae Kwon Do uniform and camouflage belt that showed she is more than a third of the way through to gaining expert status as a martial artist.
