81. The Problems
The dingo, a wild doglike animal, is thought to have been introduced It replacedthe thylacine and tasmanian devil and commonly fatally attacks marsupials.
http://www.biology.iastate.edu/intop/1Australia/Australia papers/Australia-Dilge
The Threatening of Australia's Marsupials By Amber Dilger, 1998 Extinctions and declines have not uniformly affected marsupial species. Terrestrial, medium-sized marsupials in the weight range of 35.0 g to 5.5 kg have proven to be more vulnerable, and omnivores and herbivores have declined to a greater extent than carnivores. Arboreal species such as possums and gliders and species that use rock piles for shelter have been less affected. Most problems with extinction and endangerment occur in the southern arid zone and the wheat belt of Western Australia; while the tropical north of Australia, the mesic northeast and coast of New South Wales, Tasmania, and numerous offshore islands have remained relatively unaffected by local extinctions (Short 1994).
The problems
Seven main hypotheses have been put forward to explain why species have declined and/or disappeared from various parts of Australia, and they include: 1) clearing for agriculture, 2) draining and salination of wetlands, 3) grazing and browsing by introduce animals, 4) changed fire regimes, 5) introduced predators, 6) disease, and 7) overkill by hunters (Kennedy 1992). By studying the history of threatened fauna and patterns of decline, experts have come to the conclusion that some of these hypotheses can be dismissed as not being a primary cause of declining populations. For instance, there is no direct evidence that disease has led to any mammal extinctions, though epidemics have been blamed for the decline of carnivorous marsupials in southeastern Australia and Tasmania at the turn of the century. Though Aborigines and early European settlers hunted many species for food, there is also no evidence that overkill by hunters caused any excessive declines or extinctions. Kangaroos once were one of the most widely hunted marsupials, but remain so abundant today to be considered a pest. The case of the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) possibly presents a debatable exception because this carnivorous marsupial was treated as wolves once were in North America-with zealous overkill. It is presumed extinct, but there have been supposed sightings of it in Northern Tasmania.

The Charge Opening Statement I know the bare minimum about the Howling movies. What I do know is that the first film was a cult hit by director Joe Dante, who also helmed such classics as Gremlins and Piranha . There was a sequel, the humorously titled Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf , which starred Sybil Danning. If that's not entertainment, I don't know what is. In 1987, a second sequel was produced, Howling III: The Marsupials . I can't think of a less frightening subtitle to call a film than "The Marsupials." Yes, nothing says terrifying to me like the image of Australian mammals. Anyhow, the general lot of the Howling sequels have been straight-to-video fare, and with good reason (do YOU remember seeing Howling VII: New Moon Rising playing at your local multiplex?). AMAZING WILD LIFE: BIODIVERSITY The Toronto Zoo houses thousands of species of native and exotic plants, including more than 500 species of trees and shrubs and it is home to hundreds of different species of wild life. But the Metro Zoo's collection represents only a very tiny portion of the species found in the world. 1. During your trip to the Zoo you will see many amazing animals. As you walk through the Zoo watch them closely. Find at least 3 animals (don't forget this includes insects, birds, fish and so on) and write down something unusual that you discovered about each one. (E.g. Giant Hissing Cockroach - they are really huge and they really do hiss!) Try to find animals that are different from the ones your friends find. When you get back to school put together a list of all the amazing animals you saw and all the things that make each of them special. 2. During your trip through the Zoo look at the plants within the pavilions. Find plants with leaves that are shaped like the illustrations below. If you can, find out the plant's name or make up your own.

Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus harrisii click on thumbnail to enlarge The Tasmanian Devil cannot be mistaken for any other marsupial. Its’ spine-chilling screeches, black colour, and reputed bad-temper, led the early European settlers to call it The Devil. Although only the size of a small dog, it can sound and look incredibly fierce. Powerful jaw and teeth enable it to completely devour its’ prey – bones, fur and all. In prehistoric times, the animal roamed widely over mainland Australia. Today, however, the hardy little devil is only found in Tasmania. Appearance It has a thick-set, squat build, with relatively large broad head and short, thick tail. The fur is mostly or wholly black, but white markings often occur on the chest, rump and shoulders. These markings vary between individuals. Body size also varies greatly, depending on the diet and habitat (living place). Adult males are usually larger than adult females. Large males weigh up to 12kg, and stand about 30cm at the shoulder.

- ABOUT AUSTRALIA AND THE MARSUPIALS -
(page 2)
Unlike placentals, marsupials are born in a very undeveloped state, and in a great number of species they are then protected within an abdominal pouch where they are milk fed until much more mature. Two thirds of all the estimated 250 living marsupial species are found in Australia and its neighboring islands including New Guinea. Most of the remaining species live in South America. The only marsupial which currently occurs in North America is the common and widespread Virginia opossum ( Didelphis virginiana A circa 1928 photo of a thylacine from the Hobart Zoo. The third group of mammals are the monotremes. They feed their young milk as do other mammals, but they also posses a number of reptilian characters. They are the most primitive of all living mammals as they have similarities to reptiles in their skeletal structure, and most amazingly, they still lay eggs! The monotremes are represented today by only three genera: Zaglossus (the long nosed echidna)

Marsupials: Very Special Mammals
written and reported by Stephanie S. on the Tucker Tiger Today Show's Science Spot
Mammals are warm-blooded animals that have fur or hair. Most mammal babies are born alive. They get milk from their mother.
A particular group of mammals are called marsupials. Marsupials have a pouch. They are sometimes called "pouched mammals". A female marsupial carries its baby in its pouch.
Most people say that the iskangaroo the main marsupial. However, there is no main marsupial. Marsupials include kangaroos, wallabies, oppopossumsazTasmanianvils, marsupial moles, and koalas and many more.
The only marsupial found in the United States is the opossum. South America and Australia have most of the different types of marsupials. Marsupials are becoming very rare.
