    RESEARCH PROGRAMS
    Generation Goal 3
Aim: Application of new knowledge and technologies for conservation of endangered marsupials in collaboration with conservation agencies and groups.
Generation Goal 3 draws on fundamental research in Generation Goals 1 and 2. Microsatellite libraries have been developed for koala, chuditch, numbat, planigale, phascogale, Grey kangaroo, tammar and many other species. These genetic tools are now being used to support management programs of captive populations and the investigation of the genetic consequences of the reintroduction or translocation of captive bred animals into the wild.
The Native Species Breeding Program (NSBP) at Perth Zoo has continued its close collaboration with Western Australia Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM), and other organisations involved in conservation of endangered species in WA.
The success of this core program of research and captive breeding at Perth Zoo is due to the integration of the specialist keepers into a team which is focussed on recovering threatened species and managing their reintroduction into their former known habitat.

CURRENT CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES FOR MANAGEMENT OF OVERABUNDANT MARSUPIALS

ABSTRACT Pest species may cause environmental degradation and losses to primary production, endanger native plants or animals, or be sylvatic reservoirs of disease. In Australia, 13 native species of marsupials are considered to be pests, while mainland New Zealand has 3 introduced species. Current methods of control include poisoning, shooting, trapping and commercial harvest. In this paper, I review the current pest control techniques and strategies for the management of overabundant marsupials, with emphasis on control strategies for brushtail possums in New Zealand and kangaroos in Australia. INTRODUCTION Marsupials classified as pests in Australia are all native wildlife, whereas all of New Zealand's marsupial pests are introduced. This difference has a profound influence on the type and extent of management. In Australia, the management of overabundant marsupials focuses on reducing the deleterious effects of these pests and at the same time conserving viable populations throughout their natural range. In contrast, the management of overabundant marsupials in New Zealand aims to minimise their deleterious effects and if any pest were eradicated it would be seen as a bonus. Cowan and Tyndale-Biscoe (1997) recently reviewed the status of mammalian pests in these two countries. They listed three species of marsupial in New Zealand, and of these by far the most important is the brushtail possum (

There is an urgent need for concerted action to conserve the marsupials and monotremes of the Australasian region. Australia has the worst extinction rate for the mammals of any continent or country and Papua New Guinea and eastern Indonesia are undergoing rapid development which, if not properly planned and controlled, could threaten the habitat of many marsupials, as well as other species. This Action Plan provides an overall perspective of the problems that confront conservation agencies and NGOs in the region and recommends actions required before the year 2000.

The Class Mammalia is extremely diverse. One of the most fascinating aspects separating the various groups of mammals is reproduction. The Prototherians are egg-layers, belying the traditional descriptive of mammals as all being live-bearing. Taxonomically, Prototheria is considered a Subclass. These are the monotremes, Order Monotremata. They have a cloaca and only one external opening, hence the name [ mono = one, treme = opening, -ata = having]. The extant representatives are the platypus and the three species of echidna, or spiny anteater Subclass Metatheria is made up of the Order Marsupialia , having a marsupium. Subclass Eutheria contains all of the placental mammals and represents the "typical" mammal, with which we most readily relate. We humans are, of course, placental mammals. Class Mammalia refers to the presence of mammae and even the egg-layers nurse their young, once they hatch. Therion is Greek for "beast" or "wild animal" and eu- refers to "best."

Wild animals of Outback Australia Outback Northern Territory is host to a large variety of wildlife, most of it indigenous, like the large kangaroo and the saltwater crocodile: now a tourist attraction, where from the boat "Adelaide River Queen" they are fed meat and have to jump for it. The Desert Death Adder lives up to its name as one of the most poisonous on earth and there are poisonous spiders too, although the large spider on this page is harmless. When the whites started to explore the vast interior, they introduced camels, complete with Afghan camel drivers, in the late 19th century. Later released, these camels now form large herds in the Centre and are used in tourist safaris. Donkeys are sometimes seen in remote regions too, as are horses and especially domestic cats gone wild, considered the worst pest in the bush as they tend to kill large amounts of native marsupials and birds. However, 18 other species in the kangaroo family are endangered. In some areas, red kangaroos are often considered pests. Some people fear that they compete with domestic livestock for grass. Kangaroos are hunted for their meat and hides. Government sanctioned culling programs are controversial because many people believe that culling, coupled with a severe drought, could severely endanger red kangaroo populations. Habitat: arid grasslands Range: western and central Australia Diet: Red kangaroos are herbivores. They feed on grasses, herbs and shrub and tree leaves. Length: The body of an adult red kangaroo measures 2.5 to 4.6 feet. The tail adds an additional 2 to 2.5 feet to the overall length. Weight: 50-150 lbs Lifespan: In the wild, the large kangaroos live about 15 years.

However, other species of kangaroos, wallabys, and wallaroo are listed as endangered. Habitat and range: The Bennett’s Wallaby is found in the woodlands and some grasslands of Tasmania, the islands in the Bass Strait, and coastal areas along the southeastern coast of Australia. Diet: Bennett’s wallabies are herbivores. They eat grasses, leaves, and brush. Length: The wallaby body measures 16 to 40 inches long, with another 30 to 40 inches on the tail. Weight: 30-50 pounds Lifespan: Approximately 15 years Fact File: The Bennett’s Wallaby is one of over 240 species of marsupials. Marsupials are found in North America, Central and South America, and Australia and nearby islands. What’s the difference between a kangaroo and a wallaby? Generally speaking, kangaroos are larger. However, there are exceptions to this naming system. For instance, the musky rat “kangaroo” measures only 14 inches and weighs only one pound.

Santiago, Chile Preliminary lab analysis and opposing views from different veterinarians regarding the discovery of the alleged humanoid being have generated controversy and debate not only in Chile, but also throughout Latin America and in Europe. Ever since Mega News Network of Chile first reported the story of the 3-inch long creature found near Concepcion by family members during an outdoors trip, numerous speculations, rumors, and theories about the origins of that creature have begun to spread.
The opinions from different veterinarians and health specialists in Chile are sharply divided, some point out that the alleged humanoid creature is nothing more than part of the local wild life, mentioning the possibility that it is a wild cat, or perhaps a so-called monito de monte or mouse opossum (Dromiciops Gliroides), which is a marsupial commonly found in Chile and Argentina. Other health specialists assure that the creature does not fit the descriptions of any local animal.
Doctor Mario Dussuel conducted a preliminary analysis on the tiny carcass. According to Dussuel, the 3-inch long carcass indicates that is neither a fetus, nor the remains a feline. "I took a good look

    Warning Dead Koalas, Slow Down
    Jul 23, 7:58 am ET
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Koalas dead ahead, slow down.
Koalas killed by cars are to be painted a fluorescent red and left on the side of roads for 24 hours in a "Stephen King-style" shock tactic to make Australian motorists drive more carefully through the marsupials' breeding grounds.
The shock tactic has been adopted by the Redlands Shire Council east of Brisbane in the tropical state of Queensland in the hope of protecting its large koala population, a council spokesman said on Tuesday.
Last year 609 koalas were hit by cars and trucks on the shire's tree-lined roads, and 146 of those died.
"Roadkill" koalas are now having a fluorescent red strip painted on them as part of a six-month trial to warn other motorists to look out for the cuddly but slow-moving marsupials as they cross the road.
"It might put some people in the shoes of those who have to scrape the koalas off the roads," said Australian Koala Foundation executive director Deborah Tabart.
But not all councilors supported the tactic.

Students should learn to identify the major marsupial and monotreme families, and some of the techniques for studying these animals in captivity and in the wild. This subject also covers the basic taxonomic features of modern marsupials and monotremes, the separate radiations of marsupials in Australia and South America, and the relationships between the three groups of extant mammals. This subject builds upon existing generic skills, including an ability to approach and assimilate new knowledge from observation and the literature, and an ability to use that knowledge to evaluate and communicate results. Students should gain practical experience in observation, trapping and handling of wild animals and an ability to integrate their observations with existing literature and knowledge. Students should also develop skills in analysing, interpreting and evaluating data, and gain experience in writing a scientific report.

Australia has totally unique fauna, found nowhere else on the planet. An amazing continent, covered by deserts and yet with fringes of rainforest on its North East coast. Extreme heat and specialized plant life has created uniquely adapted wildlife. South Lakes Wild Animal Park now has the largest and most varied Kangaroo collection in Europe. We have presented them in a way that you can only experience again, if you travelled to Australia. That is, freely in a large natural enclosure with the visitors allowed to wander along marked paths and interact with them - if the kangaroos choose! Kangaroos are marsupials, the gestation period is very short, around three weeks, the young is born around 2 cm long, looking nothing like a young kangaroo, it then climbs up into the mothers warm secure pouch and fixes itself onto one of its mothers nipples. Within a few months, a small pink head can be seen popping out of the pouch. It takes around 6 months before the Joey is large enough to fully leave its mothers protective pouch. They are all called macropod, referring to their large hind legs which allow them to hop and leap great distances. There are 56 known species of Australian macropod.

They first appear in the Late Cretaceous of North America, spread to Europe and North Africa, but survive now mostly in South America and Australia. Marsupials have the same highly derived skeletons, jaws and teeth as placentals. Marsupials differ in giving birth to tiny undeveloped young after a short pregnancy, but then lactating for a longer period than placentals. This is more specialized, not primitive. Marsupial Lineages Marsupials have been thought of as a single order (Marsupialia) for many years. However, recently it has been suggested that there should be 4 (or more) separate orders in order to represent their diversity properly. The American marsupials: 1. Marsupicarnivora The Ameridelphia include the family Didelphidae, the present day opposums, that are omnivorous. The monito del monte Dromiciops is a mouse-like South American marsupial in a family of its own, Microbiotheriidae, and may be the closest relative of the Australian marsupials. Large extinct carnivorous marsupials from South America, the Borhyaenidae, also belong.

Living mammals are placentals (eutheria), marsupials, and monotremes The longest line of human ancestry must hide its diminished head before the pedigree of this insignificant shellfish. We Englishmen are proud to have an ancestor who was present at the Battle of Hastings. The ancestors of Terebratulina caput serpentis may have been present at a battle of Ichthyosauria in that part of the sea which, when the chalk was forming, flowed over the site of Hastings. When all around has changed, this Terebratulina has peacefully propagated its species from generation to generation, and stands to this day, as a living testimony to the continuity of the present with the past history of the globe.
On a Piece of Chalk by T. H. Huxley in Macmillan's Magazine The evolutionary history of the Cenozoic mammals ( placentals marsupials ] and monotremes ) is better known than that of any other class of vertebrates. This is so because terrestrial sediments of this age are: fairly complete (except for Australia where there is little Cenozoic continental sediment.); accessible (near to the surface and exposed by gullying); and, easily worked (unconsolidated for the most part as exposed, for example, in the Calvert Cliffs State Park, Chesapeake Bay, MD).
