In Australia, 13 native species of marsupials are considered to be pests, while mainland New Zealand has 3 introduced species. Current methods of control include poisoning, shooting, trapping and commercial harvest. In this paper, I review the current pest control techniques and strategies for the management of overabundant marsupials, with emphasis on control strategies for brushtail possums in New Zealand and kangaroos in Australia. INTRODUCTION Marsupials classified as pests in Australia are all native wildlife, whereas all of New Zealand's marsupial pests are introduced. This difference has a profound influence on the type and extent of management. In Australia, the management of overabundant marsupials focuses on reducing the deleterious effects of these pests and at the same time conserving viable populations throughout their natural range. In contrast, the management of overabundant marsupials in New Zealand aims to minimise their deleterious effects and if any pest were eradicated it would be seen as a bonus. Cowan and Tyndale-Biscoe (1997) recently reviewed the status of mammalian pests in these two countries. Marsupials Do It Their Way The Class Mammalia is extremely diverse. One of the most fascinating aspects separating the various groups of mammals is reproduction. The Prototherians are egg-layers, belying the traditional descriptive of mammals as all being live-bearing. Taxonomically, Prototheria is considered a Subclass. These are the monotremes, Order Monotremata. They have a cloaca and only one external opening, hence the name [ mono = one, treme = opening, -ata = having].
