Introduction
Marsupials evolved from ancestral therian mammals (which give birth to live young, but have no true placenta) over 80 million years ago; well before the demise of the dinosaurs. Eutherian mammals (which have a true placenta) also evolved from therian mammals, but evolved independently from marsupials. Although we are most familiar with marsupials like the American opossum and images of the Australian kangaroos and koalas, there are about 250 species of marsupials. However, in terms of lactation biology, most of what we know is derived from study of kangaroo species. Limited evidence from other marsupial species indicates that we can expect many similarities in strategies of lactation among most marsupials, so the kangaroo species makes an acceptable general model for much of the Order Marsupialia. Nevertheless, significant differences among marsupial species likely will be found as more species are studied. Marsupials do seem to have the potential for an extended gestation, but this has not been exploited evolutionarily. This suggests that the emphasis on lactation, as opposed to intrauterine development, should be viewed as an alternate reproductive strategy and not as a more primitive form of mammalian reproduction. Despite the immature development of the newborn marsupial, they nevertheless can travel (unaided by the mother) from the birth canal to the mammary area or pouch and can attach to a teat and begin to suck. In addition, they are able to breath the atmosphere of the pouch.

marsupials (general Information). marsupials are mammals in which the femaletypically has a pouch in which it rears its young through early infancy.
http://www.fortheanimals.com/menu2/marsupials/ed_marsupials.htm
Sugar Gliders Marsupials (General Information) Marsupials have a small, relatively simple brain compared with that of placental mammals. The braincase is generally narrow. This does not mean that they are slow witted or lethargic. Even the sleepy-eyed koala can jump from tree to tree, and the Tasmanian devil is a big challenge for any other animal, no matter the size. Some of the other adaptations include the New World opossums, which have a clawless, opposable hallux (the big toe) on the hind foot which they use much like a thumb to gain a foothold in the trees, since they are arboreal in habit. The South American water opossum has developed webbed feet. The bandicoots of Australia are highly adapted to fast running, so the digits of their hind feet are greatly reduced, except for one enlarged toe which has somewhat the same effect as a horse's hoof. Burrowing and gliding marsupials have likewise developed modified limbs. All in all, marsupials thrive by adapting to their different environments well. We usually associate marsupials with Australia, where, indeed, the order displays its famous diversity of species. Of the 260-280 living species, 170 are native to Australia or the adjacent islands of Tasmania, New Zealand, New Guinea and the smaller ones. The remaining 51 species are the few living descendants of a once extensive marsupial group in the Americas. They are now relatively unobtrusive, such as the Virginia opossum (the only true "opossum") and similar forms like the tiny mouseopossums or ratopossums, and are all greatly overshadowed by the placental mammals of North and South America.

Their true origins have become the stuff of folklore and mysticism, but the fear that humans have had toward these shape shifting counterparts have led to their near extinction and to the werewolves’ extreme distrust and fear as well as understandable animosity toward humanity in general. Werewolves can change to and from their human form at will, but extreme anger and flashing lights can trigger a

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL WORKS IN MAMMALOGY
This bibliography is designed to guide beginning students in mammalogy to literature in specific areas. The works included are primarily monographic and of wide coverage. It is also a work in progress; I add new works and update editions when any such come to my attention. Note: This list has been compiled by scouring through curatorial offices and the library in the Department of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. It has been updated by perusing the new main library books borrowed by curators. I note the Museum's call number or the Library of Congress number on the back of the title page; these are not always the same, and I prefer the Museum Library's number. Several titles are taken from publisher's fliers and Choice cards; the pagination is not always correct for books that are yet to be issued, and they usually end in suspiciously round numbers. To recommend inclusion of additional works or to correct listings, please notify John H. Wahlert

Central Highlands, Victoria, Australia—In these temperate, humid forests, with mountain ash 100 meters high—the tallest flowering trees in the world, huge tree ferns, stately beeches, moss-covered logs, and ancient eucalyptus—everything seems perfect.
Globally, however, forest animals that den in the hollows of large trees are losing their homes to logging, which consumes old-growth forests and harvests second-growth forests before they develop hollows. Without dens, forests lose arboreal animals that serve as critical pest controllers, seed dispersers, or pollinators, a loss that threatens the forests' survival.
Here the animal in question is the highly endangered Leadbeater's possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri).
