Island Culture The long distances between islands and the low elevation of the land presented a challenge for early Marshall Islanders. The wave formations provided the clue to the direction of the next island. This information was passed on through "stick charts" constructed with thin strips of pandanus wood and cowry shells to show ocean patterns and islands or atolls. The Marshallese are known throughout the world for their unique knowledge of fishing techniques and styles. Their expertise in building canoes that could travel long distances combined with their exceptional navigational skills have amazed people around the world. The elders explanation of complex navigational concepts were passed down through generations along with the verbal history of the islands. There are two major dialects of the Marshallese language, correlating to the two chains of atolls: Ralik and Ratak. However, the difference between the two dialects is minor and Marshallese is considered homogeneous. Studies suggest that Marshallese is most closely related to the languages of Pohnpei, Kosrai, and Kiribati.

Marshall Islands
After almost four decades under US administration as the easternmost part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Marshall Islands attained independence in 1986. The Marshall Islands have also been home to the major US Army Base Kwajalein (USAKA) since 1964. US Government assistance is the mainstay of this tiny island economy. Agricultural production is primarily subsistence and is concentrated on small farms; the most important crops being coconuts and breadfruit. Small-scale industry is limited to handicrafts, tuna processing, and copra. The tourist industry, now a small source of foreign exchange employing less than 10% of the labour force has great potential to grow.

Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Micronesia Marshall Islands These beautiful islands are a collection of 1,225 islands and islets of which only five are single islands. The rest are grouped into 29 coral atolls which together make up more than one-tenth of all the atolls in the world. They resemble strings of pearls in a blue ocean backdrop, which is why they are referred to as the 'Pearl of The Pacific'. They lie in two parallel chains known as Sunrise and Sunset (Ratak and Ralik) and in true atoll form, they are narrow and low and encircle large central lagoons. All the islands have glorious white sandy beaches, tall palms and are lapped by crystal clear waters. Of the 29 atolls, 27 are accessible by small plane (Air Marshall Islands). Majuro and Kwajalein Atolls, the two population centres are serviced by both Air Marshall Islands and Continental Air Micronesia jet aircraft. There are also regular flights to Guam, Hawaii and Fiji.

Country Reports on Human Rights Practices
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor
March 4, 2002
The Republic of the Marshall Islands is a self-governing nation under the Compact of Free Association with the United States. The Constitution provides for free and fair elections and executive and legislative branches. The legislature consists of a 33-member Parliament (Nitijela), as well as a Council of Chiefs (Iroij), which serves a largely consultative function dealing with custom and traditional practice. The President is elected by majority Nitijela vote, and he appoints his Cabinet from its membership. The Constitution provides for an independent judiciary; however, past governments have attempted to influence the judiciary. Under the Compact of Free Association, the United States is responsible for defense and national security, and the country has no external security force. The national and local police forces have responsibility for internal security. These agencies honor constitutional and legal civil rights protections in executing their responsibilities. The population of approximately 51,000 is of Micronesian origin and concentrated primarily on the Majuro and Kwajalein Atolls. The economy depends mainly on transfer payments from the United States. Coconut oil and copra exports, a small amount of tourism, import and income taxes, an open ship registry, a tuna preparation plant (locally referred to as tuna loining), ship chandelling, and fishing licensing fees generate limited revenues.

Marshall Islands Tours Overview
The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is a nation of more than 50,000 living on 29 coral atolls and 5 small low-lying islands in the central Pacific, mid-way between Hawaii and Australia. The RMI adopted its constitution in 1979, and signed the Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986. The RMI became a member of the United Nations in 1991. The natural beauty and rich culture of the Marshall Islands attracts tourists from around the world. Pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life make the Marshalls a premiere dive destination. Yet our country faces formidable challenges in the form of rapid population growth, and accelerated sea-level rise, among others.

World's Largest Atolls Smack dab in the middle of the Pacific lie two great chains of islands, Ralik and Ratak, composed of hundreds of islands, islets and atolls, including the world's largest, Kwajalein. In addition to the legacy of hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll during the 1950s, Kwajalein continues to be the scene of "Star Wars" missile defense testing, with missiles fired from California being shot down over the atoll's massive lagoon. But like elsewhere in the Pacific, the islanders know that their economic future may lie in tourism, and scuba divers are slowly beginning to trickle into Bikini to dive its nuked shipwrecks. news + weather Click here for the latest Google headlines

CULTURE Marshallese society has always been stratified, and despite increasing Westernization and the introduction of a moneyed economy, social status still comes as much from one's kinship as it does from one's own achievements. Chiefs continue to wield a great deal of authority over land ownership and usage. Food cultivation on the islands has always been catch as catch can. Fish and seafood provide the bulk of the nonvegetable dishes, with tuna a staple of the catch. On land, breadfruit, coconut, arrowroot, yams, taro and pumpkins are the traditional mealtime mainstays. With the increasing Westernization of the Pacific, North American junk food has been increasingly dominating more traditional staples; on the rise too are the related health problems of obesity, diabetes, high blood-pressure and alcoholism. In travels between the islands, early inhabitants learned to read the patterns of the waves and the positions of the stars, and they made stick charts to record and pass on their observations to less experienced navigators. By tying flat strips of wood together in imitation of the wave patterns and attaching cowry shells to the sticks to represent particular islands and atolls, the experienced navigator could memorize the patterns for when he was out at sea - the charts were not actually taken on the journeys. Although few modern Marshallese know how to read the charts, many still make them for their popularity as souvenirs.
