Likiep Atoll Likiep Atoll
Likiep is an atoll of 65 islets, home to about 500 Marshallese, just 112 miles to the northeast of Kwajalein. World travelers Harry and Cheryl Hale made the trip from Kwajalein. Likiep is unique in the Republic of the Marshall Islands in that it is the only series of islands and communities that were owned by Europeans. With the intent of developing a Copra (coconut) plantation, A. Capelle, a German, and J. deBrum, a Portuguese, acquired rights to the Atoll in 1876. From then through several generations, the Capelles and deBrums dominated the culture and community of the island of Likiep and its affiliated atoll islands, running them as a company community. The islands seem to have prospered during the peak years of copra production.

C214 Marshallese Culture II
Issue Date: August 7, 2003
The 117th Annual Convention of the American Philatelic Society APS Stampshow 2003, in Columbus, Ohio will be a First Day of Issue venue for a new set of postage stamps from the Marshall Islands featuring Marshallese Culture. The stamps will be issued simultaneously on August 7, 2003, at the APS convention and at the General Post Office in Majuro, and will showcase fascinating aspects of the traditional culture of the Marshallese. Even as late as the early 1800s, Western civilization had not yet reached the Marshall Islands. Subsequently, the unique culture and traditions of the Marshallese people remained virtually untouched by foreign influences. Over the course of many centuries, the proud and eminently resourceful Marshallese developed a rich and vibrant culture. Their distinctive ways are demonstrated in their methods for constructing homes, their clothing styles, their expert canoe-building techniques and their remarkably sophisticated fishing strategies. Since the early days of their civilization, the Marshall Islanders proved to be extremely skilled navigators and made extensive canoe voyages among the atolls. Designed by artist Nicole Harvey, these eight fascinating stamps showcase different facets of Marshallese culture, and feature: Kabua's Daughter on Pandanus, Traditional

I. The Ten Challenges From the experience of other Pacific Island countries and East Asian countries, and after taking careful review of our own experience in the Marshall Islands, we are reminded that ten key enabling conditions are necessary to achieve Vision 2018:
  • Sound system of governance with political stability and commitment to our Vision 2018, and a competent and honest public service; High investment in education and research; Foster a culture of high savings, investment and productivity; Our ability to take advantage of emerging global trends; Effective and responsible economic and financial institutions; Facilitating equitable development of our Outer Islands; Strengthening the spirituality of our Marshallese people;

    prehistoric settlement of the Marshall Islands
    Marshall I. Weisler
    Low coral atolls are the most precarious landscapes for human habitation since they have limited land area, humus-poor, undeveloped coralline soils and potable subterranean water restricted to the largest islets of an atoll. Since most atolls are scarcely more than 2 or 3 m above sea level and are frequently inundated by surge and seasonal typhoons, the long-term prehistoric occupation of atolls is all the more amazing (Figure 1). Figure 1. The northern end of Maloelap Atoll. Extensive excavations were conducted at a large habitation site and horticultural system on Kaven, the largest islet of the atoll.
    Since 1993, a multi-disciplinary project has been examining the human colonization of these small, dispersed landmasses, the cultural and economic adaptations to these unique islands and the historical transformations of atoll societies. Figure 2.

    and Giff Johnson
    The story of how I came to be the only Bikinian woman ever to dive the ships on Bikini Atoll actually began 37 years before I was born. It was in 1946 that officials from the U.S. government flew to my homeland to ask my people if they were willing to give up their islands "for the good of mankind" so that the American military could test nuclear weapons.
    My people were moved off of Bikini and are now living on a small island in Majuro Atoll, Ejit Island (see Bikini: inside story
    When I was 14 my parents sent me away to Portland, Oregon in the United States to go to school. After four years, I returned to the Marshalls where I met my husband, Jack, an American who works for our people in our Majuro office: we were married in 1989. My education and my experience in America left me with a great desire to learn and to experience new things. In my culture, a woman has a very traditional role to fill: namely, we are expected to take care of the children, wash the clothes and cook the food. It is our duty, in our custom, to take care of the house while the men go off to work and to gather food.
    When I returned to the Marshalls I felt oppressed by these expectations. I wanted to be different, I wanted to be myself, I didn't want to be constrained

    Continental Micronesia Airline's flight 927 from Hawaii to Guam makes many island stops on its Monday, Wednesday, and Friday run. Several islands are military bases, and you are not allowed to leave the plane unless you are on official business. I soon discovered that Continental Micronesia (Mic for short) has two planes, and if one plane is out of service, you can be stranded on a south Pacific island for days at a time.
    The primary purpose of my trip was to conduct workshops on climate and global change. Before and after the workshops and on weekends, I found time to go birding and saw 17 life birds (*) in Micronesia and five in Hawaii. The field guide that used was The Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific by H. Douglas Pratt, et. al..
    The three islands that I birded were: Kosrae with birdlist of 38 species of which 15 are resident plus two extinct endemics [Kosrae Crake (Porzana monasa) and Kosrae Mountain Starling (Aplonis corvina)], Marshall Islands with 78 species of which 65% are vagrants and 19 resident species with the Purple-capped Fruit Dove extirpated, and Pohnpei with 61 species that include 34 resident birds of which the Pohnpei Mountain Starling (Aplonis pelzelni)is probably extinct, the Pohnpei Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus ponapensis) is rare, and 5 endemics [Pohnpei Lory (Trichoglossus rubiginosus), Pohnpei Flycatcher (Myiagra pluto), Pohnpei Fantail (Rhipidua kubaryi), Gray White-eye (Zosterops cinereus), and rare Long-billed White- Eye (Rukia longirostra)].
