The Mars Mission Continues
java.com to learn more. Friday Jan 16, 10:00 AM PT Q:What exactly is Java's role in the Mars Rover mission? A: The places where NASA scientists have used Java for this mission is all on the ground side right now. They have created this collaborative command and control system called Maestro , which does this combination of data visualization, collaboration, command and control. It lets them look at images and create 3-D reconstructions of terrain. It allows various experimenters to look at the scenes and topography, browse the image databases and take part in all the participation they need to do. And to do it in a remote, distributed and collaborative kind of way - so they could actually have scientists at institutions all over the world who are not only looking at the data, but also collaboratively deciding on the way the mission should proceed. One of the nice things that the JPL guys have done is that they've made a "cleaned up for civilians" version of this application available that's called Maestro. Q:How is the Java assisting in controlling the Rover from earth?

3-D Mars rover animation Mars satellite fleet KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Florida (CNN) NASA will try to launch the second of two robot Mars explorers Sunday night following several scrubbed attempts, space agency officials said Thursday. Opportunity, the second of two Mars Exploration Rovers, was originally scheduled for launch June 25 but was delayed due to the tight schedule after the June 10 launch of its sister craft, Spirit. The next launch is scheduled July 6 at 10:43 p.m. EDT. A backup opportunity is available at 11:26 p.m. EDT. A problem with cork insulation on the rocket designed to boost the rover to Mars forced NASA to scrub a launch last weekend, after two other weather-related delays. Following those aborted attempts, NASA said the problem would be inspected.

Red Mars
by Kim Stanley Robinson
If you are looking for a way to fully experience the landscape, geography, and possible future history of our neighboring planet, Red Mars is a great starting point. Winner of the 1993 Nebula award for best novel from the SF Writers of America, the book is a return to "hard" science fiction, based on a detailed and thorough knowledge of current Mars science. The first book of a trilogy including Green Mars and Blue Mars , Red Mars is a possible future history of the colonization of Mars by a group of scientists chosen by Russia and the United States, and their efforts to create a new lifestyle on the new planet. It includes up-to-date technology with ideas which are still only theoretically possible, as well as political and psychological theory, a thorough understanding of the myths of Mars as well as other literature, and an intriguing and comprehensive storyline. Overall, Red Mars is a masterwork of the possible, as well as a thought-provoking look at the human psyche and its relationship to environment.

about Mars
Mars is a simple services-oriented network status monitor written in Java. It monitors a network by simulating client connections to Internet services and reporting when those services are not responding. It is quick and easy to install and configure, which distinguishes it from other, more complex, more fully-featured network monitoring tools.

156. Spherix - Mars Research
The original published papers from the Viking Labeled Release Life Detection Experiment conducted in 1976 on the surface of mars. Life on mars?
http://www.biospherics.com/mars/
  • In 1997, Biospherics' President and CEO,
Dr. Gilbert V. Levin , announced his new conclusion that his 1976 Viking Labeled Release (LR) life detection experiment found living microorganisms in the soil of Mars.
  • Objective application of the scientific process to 21 years of continued research and to new developments on Mars and Earth forced this conclusion. Of all the many hypotheses offered over the years to explain the LR Mars results, the only possibility fitting all the relevant data is that microbial life exists in the top layer of the Martian surface.
Levin presented this result in an invited talk at the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Optical Engineering on July 30, 1997 in San Diego. On July 20, 1998, he presented another paper with new findings supporting the conclusion.
