Life on Mars. Is that a possibility? Did it ever exist? A U.S. space probe is on its way to the red planet to try to start answering those and other questions about Mars. The Global Surveyor will map the entire Martian surface and is expected to produce a spectacular mosaic of the planet. The mission is the first step in a planned decade-long exploration of Mars, and comes four months after NASA revealed what some say is "the biggest discovery in the history of science" a Martian meteorite with supposed evidence of ancient microscopic life.

Lander to listen for the sounds of Mars
The Mars Microphone November 1, 1999
Web posted at: 7:25 p.m. EST (0025 GMT) (CNN) An idea first proposed by the late Carl Sagan will finally come to fruition in December, when NASA and the Planetary Society conduct an unusual experiment aboard the Mars Polar Lander The primary mission of the Lander is to study the soil, weather and atmospheric dust of Mars, as well as to take photographs of the southern polar region. But the compact spacecraft will also carry a tiny microphone, like those used in hearing aids, that will give scientists and laypeople their first chance to hear what the surface of Earth's neighbor sounds like. "The Red Planet"
Mars, the red planet, is the fourth planet from the sun and the most Earth-like planet in our solar system. It is about half the size of Earth and has a dry, rocky surface and a very thin atmosphere.
MARS' SURFACE
A Mollweide projection of Mars made from four pictures taken by Hubble Space Telescope in 1999. A storm is visible in the top left near the pole. The surface of Mars is dry, rocky, and mostly covered with iron-rich dust. There are low-lying plains in the northern hemisphere, but the southern hemisphere is dotted with impact craters. The ground is frozen; this permafrost extends for several kilometers. Olympus Mons, the largest volcano on Mars; it is perhaps the largest volcano in the Solar System. It is 17 miles (27 km) tall and over 320 miles (520 km) across. It is thought to be extinct. The north and south poles of Mars are covered by ice caps composed of frozen carbon dioxide and water.

This is a selected list of resources for those who want to examine with a skeptical eye some of the claims at the fringes of science that seem connected to astronomy. The last section includes some general books that deal with a broader range of pseudo-scientific topics. Instructors can often use the enormous media and student interest in some of these topics as a way of generating discussion about what constitutes science and about how the scientific method allows us to test controversial hypotheses and determine whether nature really works in the way they claim. Jelly plants could grow, and glow, on Mars
Green-glowing Arabidopsis thaliana a future pioneer of Mars? By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) An invasion of an alien species with plant and animal attributes could take place within years. But Earth would be the departure point, not the destination. Terrestrial scientists planning to sprout genetically altered weeds on Mars hope to take part in a $300 million mission to the red planet that could pave the way for human colonization. The plants, which will contain genes from jellyfish to make them glow in response to environmental stresses, could leave Earth on a spacecraft bound for Mars as early as 2007, according to NASA. MESSAGE BOARD Destination Mars "It will be a symbolic step of life from Earth, leaving Earth, and growing somewhere else," said Chris McKay, a NASA scientist involved in Mars missions. A robotic gardener will scoop up, analyze and fertilize martian soil in miniature greenhouses, which will house germinating specimens of a common mustard plant known as thale cress.

The MARS cipher - IBM submission to AES MARS is now available worldwide under a royalty-free license from Tivoli . Read the press release or contact Ron Silletti at 914-765-4373 for more details. May 19, 2000: Here is the latest version of our "final comments" (in MS word PDF , or Postscript format). Also, here are two technical notes: one about linear analysis ( postscript pdf ) and the other about key-agility ( postscript pdf A note regarding repeated differences in the MARS s-box is available here August 11, 1999: MARS was chosen as a finalist in the AES selection process. A suggested "tweak" in the key-setup routine of MARS was accepted by NIST. A pseudocode of the new key-setup rutine is available here. Also, you can find here the new test vectors for MARS. MARS is a shared-key (symmetric) block cipher, supporting 128-bit blocks and variable key size. It is designed to take advantage of the powerful operations supported in today's computers, resulting in a much improved security/performance tradeoff over existing ciphers. As a result, MARS offers better security than triple DES while running significantly faster than single DES. The current C implementation runs at rates of about 65 Mbit/sec. on a 200 MHz Pentium-Pro, and 85 Mbit/sec. on a 200 MHz PowerPC. In hardware, MARS can achieve a 10X speedup factor. Still, both hardware and software implementations of MARS are remarkably compact, and easily fit on a smartcard and in other limited-resource environments.

Take a flight over the surface of Mars
Artist's concept of the Mars Global Surveyor
(CNN) Ever imagined what Mars would like from an orbiting spacecraft? NASA this week released a short Y2K Mars "movie," composed of images snapped by a camera onboard the Mars Global Surveyor. The spectacular footage offers a glimpse of the red planet near the south pole as clocks on Earth struck midnight, January 1, 2000, in the time zone that includes Mexico City and Chicago. The bright white/pink surfaces in the movie are the martian south polar cap, where it was early summer as the Earth's new century arrived. The martian atmosphere is hazy and pink with particles kicked up by dust storms that occur along the margin of the retreating seasonal frost cap.

Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) launched from Cape Canaveral Air Station on 7 November 1996 and was successfully put into orbit around Mars on 11 September 1997! On 31 January 2001, MGS completed the mapping phase of the mission, which lasted one martian year (two Earth years). During this phase, the MGS instruments systematically monitored and made measurements of the planet's surface and atmosphere. The spacecraft is now in its extended mission, continuing to acquire new data and provide support for the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission, currently on its way to Mars. This is the homepage for the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) , in the Department of Geological Sciences at Arizona State University . TES is one of five instruments on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. The goal of this website is to present up-to-date information about the TES instrument and its activites at Mars as well as information about infrared spectroscopy and links to many other Mars-related sites. We also have a very active Mars K-12 Outreach Program.
