Software Glitch Gives Spirit a Breather
Despite a software hiccup that gave the Spirit rover a short break in its trek to the "Columbia Hills," the robot has set a new record for autonomous driving on Mars. On sol 133 of its mission Spirit drove about 371 feet (113 meters) on its own, more than 100 feet farther than its previous record, 256 feet (78 meters). The long drive was possible partly because of a two-day break in activity due to a software fault that popped up on sol 131. While quickly remedied, the hiccup left rover planners unsure of Spirit's final position, which they spent sol 132 reacquiring using the rover's onboard cameras. The pause in driving activity gave Spirit a chance to charge up its batteries, preparing the robot for the longest drive in its history on Mars. That software glitch appears to have occurred during a vulnerable three-microsecond period, when Spirit's computer attempted to perform a "write" command over a "write-protected" part of its RAM memory. According to Spirit's flight software team, the chances of the glitch occurring again are extremely low and no modifications to the planning process were needed to avoid the possibility in the future. The Opportunity rover, Spirit's twin, is vulnerable to the same software fault, they added.

Historia, im¡genes y comentarios.

Mars Attacks

Welcome to The Daily Martian Weather Report . The launch of the Mars Global Surveyor from the Cape Canaveral Air Station took place on November 7, 1996. After a ten-month cruise to Mars, the MGS spacecraft executed its orbit insertion maneuver on September 12, 1997. The period of the initial orbit of Mars was nearly two days. The mission plan called for a three- to four-month aerobraking sequence to modify the orbit to one suitable for mapping the red planet. The mapping phase of the mission was then scheduled to begin in the spring of 1998, and to continue for one complete martian year (687 days). Unfortunately, problems with one of the two MGS solar panels forced the aerobraking sequence to proceed more slowly than planned. MGS executed its final aerobraking pass through the upper martian atmosphere on February 4, 1999, and successfully performed its aerobraking exit maneuver later that day. MGS executed its transfer to mapping orbit on February 19, 1999, and since then has been in the desired mapping orbit with a period just under two hours and an altitude of approximately 250 miles. The primary mapping phase of the MGS mission began in March, 1999, and was completed in January, 2001 after one martian year. An extended mapping mission began on January 31, 2001 and is expected to continue into the year 2002. The extended mission will permit study of year to year changes on Mars.

Two others will roam, grind and bore. Together, they could revolutionize our knowledge of the red planet and extraterrestrial life. The robotic explorers from Europe and the United States are using entirely different approaches to the cosmic quest, which begin this month with launches that take advantage of an exceptionally close Earth-Mars alignment. The Beagle 2 lander is a shoestring biologist, built by the British at the behest of the European Space Agency for an estimated $60 million. It departed Monday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The dog-sized bot, only 73 pounds (33 kilograms), will look for direct evidence of existing life, whether combing the Martian atmosphere for methane, a possible biological byproduct, or checking rocks for a form of carbon favored by cells.
