Edgar Rice Burroughs
Barsoom Series
Perhaps best known for his Tarzan series, which is itself a cross of genres, Burroughs' Barsoom saga establishes Mars as the stage for SF and Fantsay protocols to mix indescriminantly. The stories recount the exploits of John Carter as he battles with various green, yellow, and black men before he wins the hand of the red-skinned princess Dejah Thoris. Although Carter's adventures take place on Mars, he travels there by magical means, and Barsoom itself is inconsistent and scientifically implausible.

PASADENA, California (AP) After a journey of seven months and 303 million miles, a six-wheeled NASA rover will speed like a bullet Saturday night toward the surface of Mars and, if all goes as planned, stop with a bounce. The plunge through the Martian atmosphere at 12,300 mph will mark the start of the riskiest portion of the voyage thus far. As the unmanned spacecraft Spirit plummets to the rocky surface 80 miles below, it will rely on the precisely choreographed use of heatshields, parachutes and rockets to slow its descent. Just eight seconds before hitting the ground, the golf cart-size Spirit should inflate a set of airbags to cushion its impact.

55. Mission To Mars
Cornell University, NASA s JPL and Bill Nye present the next mission to the planet mars Athena in 2003. It s actually mars, the fourth planet from the Sun.
http://athena.cornell.edu/kids/
When you dream about going places, where does your mind take you? The Grand Canyon, Africa, or New York? If you spend time looking at the stars, you'll notice a bright one that's a bit red. It's actually Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun. But mainly, it's the next place humans are going to explore. Mars is where we're all going on this site. Mars is so much like the Earth that we have to go there and see what happened. Where did the water go? When we look at close-up pictures of Mars, we see stream beds where water used to flow. We see big canyons and ice caps at the North and South Poles of Mars. Our planets are a lot alike. But something happened on Mars to make the water disappear and make it a cold place with a very thin atmosphere. So, we're sending robot instruments and rovers to Mars to study the environment and look for signs of life. There's a lot to do. Come on!

Our goals:
  • Throughout: Elicit business and government financial and political support for our agenda.
  • Phase One: Build and test watertight, submersible, mobile housing units (seasteads) first in sheltered coastal waters, then on the Emperor Seamounts.
  • Construct and test heated airtight biodomes in Antarctica between 90 degrees west and 150 degrees west and in the Transantarctic Mountains and the Taylor Dry Valley. These tested domes and tents will be property of the Mars Sovereignty, though scientific tests may be conducted with other nations, such as USA, Russia, China, New Zealand, etc.
  • Phase Two: Construct a launch site and build modified rotary rockets to place cargo in Earth orbit.
  • Phase Three: Construct and launch Earth docking port in geosynchronise high orbit.
  • Phase Four: Construct and launch Mars return vehicle and robot mining equipment to dig into the cliffs of Olympus Mons.
  • Launch further Mars return vehicles, ice mining robots, and construction robots to build greenhouses.

The "Face on Mars"
Introduction
In July, 1976, Viking Orbiter 1 was acquiring images of the Cydonia region of Mars as part of the search for potential landing sites for Viking Lander 2. On 25 July, 1976, it photographed a region of buttes and mesas along the escarpment that separates heavily cratered highlands to the south from low lying, relatively crater-free, lowland plains to the north. Among the hills was one that, to the Viking investigators scrutinizing the images for likely landing sites, resembled a face. Owing to the importance of the landing site search, and with a desire to provide the public with at least one familiar-looking landform amid the craters and exotic terrains found all over Mars, an image including the face-like hill was released as part of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's public relations effort. The text of that release notes the face-like hill. Subsequent to this release, some people have argued, mostly in the lay literature, that the face-like hill is artificially shaped. Although their argument has been expanded to a host of nearby features, none commands public interest like the "Face." This page will provide interested persons with both the raw Viking images, transformed to GIF format, and a brief tutorial (with examples) of image processing techniques applied to create "better looking" images.

60. ASTRO KIDS: Mars
Images, details and facts about this planet, its surface and its temperature.
http://www.astronomy.com/content/static/AstroForKids/mars.asp
JPL/NASA Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. Its orbit is roughly 142 million miles from the sun. The planet's reddish color is caused by rust (iron oxide) in the soil. Mars is the planet most like Earth. It takes 687 Earth days (about 2 Earth years) for Mars to go around the sun one time, and Mars spins on its axis at about the same speed as Earth does. It takes 24 hours and 37 minutes (about 1 Earth day) for Mars to rotate one time. Part of the middle section of Valles Marineris
JPL/NASA
Olympus Mons is the largest volcano peak in the solar system.
JPL/NASA Mars has the largest canyon (Valles Marineris), and the highest volcano (Olympus Mons) in the solar system. If Valles Marineris were on Earth, it would span the United States, from New York on the East Coast to California on the West Coast. It is about 1,300 miles long, 310 miles wide, and about 5 miles deep. Olympus Mons is nearly 3 times higher than Mount Everest. It rises above the Martian surface more than 82 thousand feet. This giant volcano's base is the size of Missouri. There are also lots of channels on Mars, and they look like Earth's river channels. Most scientists believe water once flowed on the martian surface, but new studies suggest there may still be water in some places on the surface.
