Project Summary
This issue describes the MARS-96 robotic spacecraft scientific mission to Mars prepared according to the Federal Program of Space Exploration developed by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Space Agency. The Mars 96 spacecraft was launched from Baikonur on 16 November 1996. The spacecraft was not inserted into the interplanetary trajectory to Mars due to a malfunction in the Block-D (the third stage of the rocket) and during the third revolution around the Earth the spacecraft reentered the Earth's atmosphere and fell into the Pacific Ocean.
Information was provided by Space Research Institute, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytic Chemistry, Lavochkin Research Association, Keldysh Applied Mathematics Institute, Flight Control Center and the Mars-96 scientific experiment teams.

Mission to Mars (2000)
Synopsis:
The year is 2020 and NASA has made another giant leap for mankind- successfully landing a team of astronauts on Mars. However, shortly after their arrival on the Martian surface, Mission Commander Luke Graham and his colleagues encounter something bizarre, shocking and chilling that brings about a catastrophic and mysterious disaster which decimates the crew. Graham is able to send one hasty cryptic message back to Earth before his nightmare begins. Haunted by the enigmatic last communication received from the ill-fated Mars One crew, NASA hurriedly prepares and launches a rescue mission to investigate the tragedy and bring back survivors- if any. Co-piloted by Commander Woody Blake and Jim McConnell, with colleagues Dr. Terri Fisher and scientist Phil Ohlmyer on board, the astronauts set out on a heroic six-month journey to Mars.

Kees uses data from NASA's Mars spacecraft to create stunning renders of Mars as it is now, and may have been in a watery past. New Mars has spoken with Kees in a previous article about his work, and Stuart Atkinson welcomes him back once more to this website with a new interview that covers how he creates his images and his associations with NASA and ESA.

Fiction by a scientist who knows both how to tell a good story and the territory it is set in. Mars (Greek: Ares ) is the god of War. The planet probably got this name due to its red color; Mars is sometimes referred to as the Red Planet. (An interesting side note: the Roman god Mars was a god of agriculture before becoming associated with the Greek Ares; those in favor of colonizing and terraforming Mars may prefer this symbolism.) The name of the month March derives from Mars.
