marquetry today for the most part is still traditional. Paging though the past twentyyears of Fine woodworking Magazine most of the inlay work is traditional.

A simple marquetry picture. What is Marquetry? Marquetry is the art of inlaying different woods, and other natural materials to create a picture. To inlay is to set a material onto another surface, but recessed in so that inlayed material is at the same level as the surface. Most of the time the inlayed material is wood but it could be ivory, mother-of-pearl, tortoise shells, bark, straw, stone, metal, gems, etc. All the peculiarities, grain, knots, defects, etc. are used in the overall effect of the picture. One of my favorite effects is to use a spalted wood for an ominous looking sky. Marquetry is often found on the finest furniture. It has been around for thousands of years, and today is considered something of a dying art Marquetry depending on how one defines was practiced in Egyptian and Roman times. Pierre Ramond says that King Mausole was the first to use it in his palace in 350 BC. It was widely use for the rich in the 17 th th , and 19 th Fine Woodworking Magazine most of the inlay work is traditional. I personally would not work with any colors past what is natural, but I have seen beautiful work using dyed woods.

Wet-sanding Basics For most of us, finishing means applying varnish, polyurethane, or paint with a brush. The dream of a glass-smooth tabletop is always spoiled by brush marks and bits of dust and other debris. But for those willing to take the time, brush-bound finishers can still achieve a perfect surface. The idea is to build up a thick layer of finish, then polish it smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. This article tells how. Spring Cleaning For efficiency and safety your shop should get a thorough cleaning annually. So why not time it with spring? Do some basic power-tool maintenance, too. Well-maintained and adjusted tools work better. They're safer, too. This article included several tips on making your shop a better place to work.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Woodworking is the process of building, making or carving something using wood This article describes the wood that comprises trees and boards. For the Chinese element, see wood (classical element) Wood is a material found as the primary content of the stems of 'woody plants', especially trees, but also all shrubs. These perennial plants are characterised by stems that grow outward year after year, and that are composed of cellulose and lignin based tissue. Plants that do not produce wood are called 'herbaceous'; this group of plants includes all annual plants, many perennial plants, and most submerged and floating aquatic plants.

History
Along with stone, mud, and animal parts, wood was certainly one of the first materials worked by primitive man. Indeed, the development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials. Two ancient civilizations to use woodworking are the Egyptians and the Chinese. Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian drawings. There are also copies of ancient egyptian work, such as chairs, that still exist. The metal used for this by the Egyptians was probably bronze or even straight copper, as ironworking was not developed until much later.

A carcass is the part of a tire that remains when the tread is removed. Carcass was a British goregrind/death metal band formed by Napalm Death guitarist Bill Steer. The band focused on topics mostly relating to the medical field and bizarre combinations of medical equipment and chemicals with human anatomy. This lyrical focus lead many in the music press to falsely believe that one or more members of the band had studied medicine. There is more evidence to show that this lyrical focus was a method of pushing vegetarian beliefs (for example "Exhume to Consume"). The band broke up after relasing

VENEERING, MARQUETRY AND INLAY
Fine WoodWorking ANNOTATION

An excellent book that deals with these 3 subjects from the perspective of actual projects. It gives a good description of how veneers are produced at a mill. I particularly like the projects that deal with vacuum presses. There is a good article on the marquetry of Vadim Aksyeonov, a Russian artist who creates 'wooden' renderings of Russian landmarks. Finally there is reference made to the art of marquetry with an extract from the book called Marquetry by Pierre Ramond. There are several examples of his work and some of the students from l'Ecole Boulle which will give you an idea of the scope and range of this medium. This is a good reference book for the advanced users of veneers particularly in the area of veneer application and the use of woodworking tools.
COVER Veneering, marquetry and inlay are great ways to dress up your woodworking. In these 23 articles from the pages of Fine Woodworking magazine, you'll get the best technical advice available, with information on everything from sawing your own veneers to creating inlay patterns freehand. There's even advice on working materials like birch bark, silver and turquoise. If you're looking for a way to expand your woodworking repertoire, this collection of articles is a great place to start. The "Best of Fine Woodworking series spans over ten years of Fine Woodworking magazine. In book form for the first time, the material is organized by subject and indexed for easy reference. There is no duplication between these books and the popular "Fine Woodworking on..." series.

ANNOTATION
This is an excellent book on the fret saw method. It has lots of detailed photographs that help with understanding the techniques being described.
Although the book is called "The Art of Marquetry", there is not too much on "ART" to say, but Craig spends most of his time describing the "double-bevelled" technique. This, as he describes, is when the two pieces of veneers are cut at the same time. The first veneer cut makes the hole, the second, the piece to fit in it, hence the "double". It is called "bevelled" because the angle of the cut is about 12% (depending on the thickness of the veneer).
In conclusion I would say that the book has some excellent detailed photographs which demonstrate the techniques being described by Craig. However, I would also add that it is only useful if you intend to pursue marquetry on the basis of cutting veneers with a fret or scroll saw. The book does demonstrate the sand shading technique very clearly. As far as the "Art" goes, Craig covers very few aspects that could be considered useful or instructive from an artistic perspective.
AUTHOR
Craig Vandell Stevens Craig Vandall Stevens designs and builds one of a kind furniture in his one-person shop in Sunbury, Ohio. He studied furniture making at the college of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program in northern California, a program renowned for its excellence in craftsmanship and attention to detail. There under the instruction of master cabinetmaker Jim Krenov, he developed an extensive background in traditional cabinetmaking techniques and hand-skills. The focused environment of the college became the setting for Craig to begin exploiting the delicate art of marquetry

Selecting The Best Wood
Our craftspeople spend hours sorting through stacks of wood, looking for boards with just the right color, grain pattern, and figure. The uniquely colored African satinwood and Bolivian rosewood were carefully selected for Steve Knowles' Impulse End Tables. The beautiful quilted maple in Bryan Boyle's coffee table is very difficult to find. The natural color and grain of the woods in Rich Soborowicz's table are used to create the delicate rose marquetry in the table top.
