" That observation was made to me by a young Marine crewman of an amphibious assault vehicle, an AAV. We were in a command version of the transport, and the officers were having a hard time getting the hang of opening and closing the heavy top hatches. From my vantage point, it looked more like someone was going to lose a head. Savidge discussed the military activity Thursday with CNN Anchor Paula Zahn. SAVIDGE: The U.S. Marines have secured the key city of Kut. Kut is located on the Tigris River. It is one of the last rivers you're going to be crossing before you get toward Baghdad. It's a very ancient and a very crucial city because of its geographic location. The military also thought it could have been a key city when it came to some sort of fight with the Republican Guard. It was the Baghdad Division of the Republican Guard that was headquartered in this particular region. However, [there are] no indications of heavy fighting, but certainly if you take a look over here, there [are] all the indications of a clear U.S. military Marine buildup already in this particular area.

Carlson got an early start in his career as a maverick. He ran away from his home in Vermont at the age of 14 and two years later bluffed his way past the recruiters to enlist in the Army. When war broke out in 1917, he already had five years of service under his belt. Like Merritt A. Edson, he soon won a commission, but arrived at the front too late to see combat. After the war he tried to make it as a salesman, but gave that up in 1922 and enlisted in the Marine Corps. In a few months he earned a commission again. Other than a failed attempt at flight school, his first several years as a Marine lieutenant were unremarkable. In 1927 Carlson deployed to Shanghai with 4th Marines. There he became regimental intelligence officer and developed a deep interest in China that would shape the remainder of his days. Three years later, commanding an outpost of the Guardia National in Nicaragua, he had his first brush with guerilla warfare. That became the second guiding star of his career. In his only battle, he successfully engaged and dispersed an enemy unit in a daring night attack. There followed a tour with the Legation Guard in Peking, and a stint as executive officer of the presidential guard detachment at Warm Springs, Georgia. In the latter job Carlson came to know Franklin D. Roosevelt.

According to an officer with a 2nd Marines reconnaissance unit, one informant, whose information was corroborated by other sources, told Marines that Al Majeed has been hiding his identity by dressing up in plain attire, so he can blend into the populace. It was also reported that Al Majeed has been driving around in an old red car, possibly a 1979 Nissan.
