by Normon Solomon Ronald Reagan, Hedgehogs and the November Election Since Ronald Reagan’s passing, the media have been filled with a celebration of his youthful spirit, his indomitable optimism, his faith in America’s greatness and in America’s goodness. His words have been reverberating: “morning again in America,” “springtime of hope,” “a promised land,” “the last best hope of man on earth.” The imagery varied, but a single, overarching principle remained: Reagan’s pledge to return America to its essential role as “a shining city on a hill,” a place of goodness, promise and hope. In other words, Ronald Reagan was one hell of a hedgehog.

The Regional Maritime Security Initiative was disclosed during congressional testimony by Admiral Thomas Fargo, U.S. Pacific Commander. The proposal grew out of the Proliferation Security Initiative, a U.S.-led multinational group cooperating to halt the transfer of nuclear technology by land and sea. Admiral Fargo told Congress that he expected "a broad range of support" from Southeast Asia as "all the countries are concerned about the trans-national threat. This is a pretty vast space, and no country can do this by itself." Najib Razak, Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, objected to the idea as a question of national sovereignty. Marty Natalegawa, an Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman said, "The security of the Malacca strait is for Indonesia and Malaysia to shoulder. Therefore, we will not accept any policies or steps that are inconsistent with that reality." Both countries complained that they had not been briefed on the proposal by U.S. officials. International security experts have expressed concern about the vulnerability of shipping in the strait, through which a quarter of the world's trade passes every day.

Publish exclusive world news on your site U.S. Marines engaged in 'silent war' near Syrian border SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM Monday, April 19, 2004 BAGHDAD – The United States has been fighting what officials term a silent war with Syria which killed at least five soldiers over the weekend. U.S. officials said U.S. Marines have deployed along the Syrian border to stop the flow of insurgents and equipment to Iraq. They said Marines have engaged with both Sunni insurgents as well as some Syrian security personnel along the border in clashes that have intensified over the last few weeks. The U.S. military presence – increased by more than a third over the last two months – was said to be focused on the western Iraqi towns of Al Qaim and Qusaybah, regarded as key points in the smuggling of insurgents and weapons from Syria to Iraq. Health insurance for the self-employed: Special offer Officials acknowledged that at least five soldiers of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, who replaced the 82nd Airborne Division, were killed in battle with 150 insurgents in Husaybah over the weekend, Middle East Newsline reported. "The Marines did suffer some casualties there," Maj. Gen. John Sattler, director of operations for U.S. Central Command, said. "But in the end, they were able to go ahead and calm that area down. I would say the last six, seven, eight days, we've had some sporadic fighting up in that area, but very limited casualties on the part of the Marines."

E-Mail This Article Published on Sunday, March 30, 2003 by the Sunday Times/UK US Marines Turn Fire on Civilians at the Bridge of Death by Mark Franchetti in Nasiriya THE light was a strange yellowy gray and the wind was coming up, the beginnings of a sandstorm. The silence felt almost eerie after a night of shooting so intense it hurt the eardrums and shattered the nerves. My footsteps felt heavy on the hot, dusty asphalt as I walked slowly towards the bridge at Nasiriya. A horrific scene lay ahead. Some 15 vehicles, including a minivan and a couple of trucks, blocked the road. They were riddled with bullet holes. Some had caught fire and turned into piles of black twisted metal. Others were still burning. Amid the wreckage I counted 12 dead civilians, lying in the road or in nearby ditches. All had been trying to leave this southern town overnight, probably for fear of being killed by US helicopter attacks and heavy artillery. Their mistake had been to flee over a bridge that is crucial to the coalition's supply lines and to run into a group of shell-shocked young American marines with orders to shoot anything that moved.

With U.S. Marines gone, quiet returns to battle-scarred Fallujah
By Robert Moran Knight Ridder Newspapers FALLUJAH, Iraq - Traffic is brisk on the streets of Fallujah, and drivers - instead of stopping for masked insurgents toting rocket-propelled grenade launchers - are yielding these days to the outstretched hands of Iraqi traffic cops. On the surface, life has returned to what passes for normal in this battle-scarred city. The shops and roadside vendors are open for business again. A notice posted at the mayor's office urges parents to send their children back to school.

U.S. Marines were sent to rescue wounded members of the 507th Maintenance Company on March 23, the day the Fort Bliss unit was attacked in Iraq, but nine of the Marines who took part in the rescue effort were killed and eight others are missing, Pentagon officials said Sunday. Meanwhile, efforts by the Red Cross to secure access to the American POWs have not succeeded, officials said Monday. U.S. military officials also confirmed that the four bodies discovered a few days ago in shallow graves are of American troops, but have still not determined the branch of the military in which the troops served, much less their names.

A new bin Laden statement
Bin Laden appears gaunt and pale in a videotape believed to be made in November. SUMMARY: Appearing gaunt and pale, Osama bin Laden called the September 11 attacks on the United States "blessed terror" in a new videotaped statement mailed to the Arab language Al-Jazeera television network. In Afghanistan, U.S. Marines are preparing to shut down Camp Rhino and transfer to the Kandahar airport and a U.S. airstrike targeted what the Pentagon said was the compound of the Taliban's minister of intelligence. UPDATE: Bin Laden accused the United States of hating Islam in an excerpt of a videotaped statement aired Wednesday by the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television network. "These events have revealed many important issues to Muslims. It's very clear that the West in general, and America in particular, have an unspeakable hatred for Islam." ( Full story The White House dismissed bin Laden's latest statement. "This is nothing more than the same kind of terrorist propaganda that we've heard before," said Scott McClellan, deputy White House press secretary. (

Maj. Gen. David Grange: Marines pack a punch
David Grange is a former U.S. Army major general and now a CNN military analyst. UPDATE: With about 1,000 Marines on the ground, The coalition finally has a forward operating base inside Afghanistan. It's about 300 miles from the north Arabian Sea to Kandahar province, which made assaults launched off ships pretty much out of operational reach without having to stop and refuel somewhere. Reducing the operational radius for missions gives the U.S. tremendous capabilities. The Marines are a very good combined arms team, integrating air and ground forces. They have attack helicopters and Harrier jets, with its vertical take-off capability, for close-air support; they have artillery; they have some lightly armored vehicles; and, of course, they have ground troops. It makes sense for these guys to go after any target that raises its head, and they're ready to go now. It just depends on intelligence, and they'll coordinate with special forces' liaisons in the area for that reason. This force is very nicely shaped for interdiction missions and to provide muscle for special operations forces, and I can also see them doing reconnaissance, and blocking roads.

Marines And The O.S.S.-WW II Col. Peter J. Ortiz, USMC (The following information is from information provided by Historical Section HQMC, Washinton, D.C.). "One of the most decorated Marine officers of World War II, Colonel Peter Ortiz served in both Africa and Europe througout the war, as a member of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Although born in the U.S., he was educated in France and began his military service in 1932 at the age of 19 with the French Foreign Legion. He was wounded in action and imprisoned by the Germans in 1940. After his escape, he made his way to the U.S. and joined the Marines. As a result of his training and experience, he was awarded a commission, and a special duty assignment as an assistant naval attache in Tangier, Morocco. Once again, Ortiz was wounded while perfoming combat intelligence work in preparation for Allied landings in North Africa. In 1943, as a member of the OSS, he was dropped by parachute into France to aid the Resistance, and assisted in the rescue of four downed RAF pilots. He was recaptured by the Germans in 1944 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW. Ortiz's decorations included two Navy Crosses, the Legion of Merit, the Order of the British Empire, and five Croix de Guerre. He also was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French. Upon return to civilian life, Ortiz became involved in the film industry. At the same time, at least two Hollywood films were made based upon his personal exploits. He died on 16 May 1988 at the age of 75."
