As Marines occupy Port-au-Prince:
Reign of terror follows US-backed coup in Haiti
By Bill Van Auken 3 March 2004 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author By means of covert subversion and overt military intervention, the Bush administration has overthrown a popularly elected president and resurrected political forces linked to decades of dictatorship and counterrevolutionary terror in Haiti. Among the first acts of the right-wing gunmen was the storming of the penitentiary in Port-au-Prince, freeing some 2,000 prisoners. Apparently, the main aim of this action was to liberate a number of notorious killers from previous dictatorships, including Prosper Avril, who headed a military junta that ruled the country from 1988 to 1990 and was convicted on charges of illegally imprisoning and torturing political dissidents. The action also provided a fresh group of recruits for the terror squads from among the criminals who were let loose. The FRAPH, a paramilitary group formed under the military regime that took power when Aristide was first overthrown in a US-backed coup in 1991, received financial support and political guidance from the US Central Intelligence Agency and is blamed for the murder of at least 3,000 Haitians.

United States Marine Corps During World War 2, Queen Elizabeth Park was the site of the largest United States Marine Corps camp in New Zealand. The camp housed more than 20,000 men in and around the present park boundaries. QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK
During the war the threat of Japanese invasion was great. While many of our armed forces were engaged in battle in Europe and North Africa, people feared the worst. With a commitment to freedom, President Roosevelt promised Winston Churchill that the United States would protect allied countries.
For the first time in history New Zealand was to become host to the troops of foreign ally. Camps were set up throughout New Zealand for forces to use as bases for recuperation, training and preparation before embarking for battle.
To recapture life at the camps and to recognise the aid the United States Marines gave to our region, the Wellington Regional Council has erected a commemorative plaque, flags and interpretation panels at Queen Elizabeth Park.
CAMP BUILDING
In April 1942 the Public Works Department, already busy with its own works, were given six weeks to build and set up camps to house 1st and 2nd Divisions of the United States Marines.

Marines going to Tora Bora to hunt bin Laden
Outgoing President Burhanuddin Rabbani, left, embraces Afghanistan's new leader Hamid Karzai. SUMMARY: U.S. military officials said Monday that the movement of U.S. Marines into the mountains of eastern Afghanistan to search for Osama bin Laden is "imminent." Meanwhile, Afghan leader Hamid Karzai appointed an early critic of his interim government to a key defense post. And a man accused of trying to set off explosives on a trans-Atlantic flight made his first court appearance Monday. UPDATE: The Marines' mission to hunt for bin Laden is the reason U.S. warplanes have stopped bombing the Tora Bora region, military officials said. U.S. Special Forces will accompany the Marines as they search the network of caves and tunnels for bin Laden and his al Qaeda followers. Karzai named Northern Alliance Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum as his deputy defense minister. Dostum, an ethnic Uzbek, had been critical of the interim Afghan government, saying it didn't adequately represent the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance. "We have a very old, good relationship, my brother Gen. Dostum," Karzai said.

Search focuses on southern Afghanistan
A convoy of trucks carry surrendering Taliban fighters across the Bangi Bridge on the Konduz front line on Saturday. SUMMARY: U.S. forces are searching for Taliban leaders and Osama bin Laden around the Afghan cities of Kandahar and Jalalabad, the U.S. commander in the region said Tuesday. Meanwhile, Afghan groups gathered in Germany to hammer out a framework for a post-Taliban government in Afghanistan. UPDATE: Gen. Tommy Franks, the chief of the U.S. Central Command, said Tuesday U.S. and allied intelligence sources have led coalition forces to pay "very close attention" to the areas surrounding Kandahar and Jalalabad. But Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld noted those areas were not the only places the U.S.-led coalition is looking for bin Laden. ( Full story Author Larry Goodson said the caves and tunnels of southern Afghanistan are unlikely to be destroyed strictly by aerial attack and could allow Taliban troops and al Qaeda operatives to move long distances without surfacing. US Marines withdraw from Fallujah
US Marines are pulling back from some of their siege lines around Iraq's rebellious city of Fallujah as local police take up positions after talks on ending a month of fighting that has cost hundreds of lives. Daybreak saw none of the gun battles and US air strikes of the previous evening but it remains unclear whether a full deal has finally been agreed and what its terms might be. Marines and police spoke on Thursday of cooperating with senior officers of Saddam Hussein's now disbanded Iraqi army to restore order. That might signal a reversal of a US policy of excluding leading figures in Saddam's Baath Party from the new order in Iraq. Some Iraqis have been urging a change of tack in order to tap technical expertise among former officials.

Gunfire erupts after detainees leave Kandahar
U.S. Marines escort detainees at Kandahar airport Wednesday. (CNN) Gunfire erupted Thursday shortly after a C-17 transport plane containing 20 al Qaeda and Taliban detainees took off from a U.S. military base in southern Afghanistan. The gunfire was not directed at the plane, which had taken off about 15 minutes earlier, a U.S. Central Command spokesman told CNN. U.S. Marines at Kandahar International Airport answered the small arms fire with M-16 rifles and machine guns. Two Marine Cobra helicopters canvassed the area and tracer fire crisscrossed overhead. The sedated, hooded prisoners were chained to their seats after boarding the aircraft under heavy security. The C-17 will stop in an undisclosed location, at which point the detainees will be transferred to a C-141 transport plane and taken to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba. Many of the 331 other detainees in Kandahar, including 45 brought there Wednesday night, will eventually be moved to Cuba, where U.S. military personnel are constructing a detention center. (

U.S. marines accused of civilian deaths in Mosul
Last Updated Thu, 17 Apr 2003 9:09:47 MOSUL, IRAQ - Two straight days of gunfire exchange between U.S. marines and Mosul residents has caused 17 deaths in Iraq's third-largest city, say local hospital officials.

Eighteen people were reported wounded in the exchange. U.S. Central Command said its troops were involved in a gun battle Tuesday, but had no immediate comment on Wednesday's events. "They are killing us and no one's talking about it," Zahra Yassin said at a hospital with her wounded son. "We want Saddam back. At least there was security." Wednesday's shooting apparently began when police tried to drive looters away from a burning bank. The looters were after old Iraqi coins which lay scattered on the street. To disperse the crowds an Iraqi policeman fired warning shots in the air. This sparked U.S. marines, stationed on a roof across from the bank, to open fire with a heavy machine gun. A marine sergeant near the scene denied U.S. troops fired into the crowd.

CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina (CNN) Defense attorneys on Wednesday began describing U.S. Marine Capt. Richard Ashby's version of events that led his EA-6B Prowler jet to sever a ski gondola cable last year in Italy, sending the car crashing to the ground. All 20 people aboard were killed. The defense opened its case after the prosecution rested earlier in the day. Prosecutors had questioned 55 witnesses during 11 days of testimony. Ashby is being court-martialed on charges of manslaughter in the February 3, 1998, incident near Cavalese The first two defense witnesses to testify members of Ashby's squadron said they considered Ashby an excellent pilot. Ashby is expected to testify in his own defense.
