Seven Marines die as tanker plane crashes
A U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) A U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 military refueling plane carrying seven Marines crashed into a mountainside Wednesday as it prepared to land at a forward operating base in western Pakistan, U.S. officials said. All seven aboard the plane died. Among those killed was radio operator Sgt. Jeannette L. Winters, 25, of Gary, Indiana, the first woman to be killed in the U.S.-led war on terrorism, Operation Enduring Freedom. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the soldiers. But I want to remind them that the cause that we are now engaged in is just and noble. The cause is freedom," President Bush said Wednesday evening. Maj. Chris Hughes, a Marine Corps spokesman in Kandahar, said the crash occurred about 8:15 p.m. (10:15 a.m. ET) as the plane approached the Marine base at Shamsi, just west of Quetta, Pakistan.

After the Fallujah fighting, US marines battle for hearts and minds
FALLUJAH, Iraq (AFP) May 06, 2004
Now that the fighting in Fallujah has died down, US marines have launched a battle for the hearts and minds of Iraqis in and around this city that has come to symbolize the anti-coalition insurgency. While they stay away from the Jolan neighborhood where the fiercest fighting took place over the past weeks, marines are meeting with residents and community leaders to offer compensation for battle damage and to seek goodwill. They already have settled dozens of smaller claims for cows killed in the crossfire, buildings damaged by gunfire or power lines downed in firefights. In one case this week, villagers just outside the Jolan district were surprised to see troops show up with food, water and cash just hours after they complained US vehicles broke their main water pipe. Marine lawyer Captain Kevin Coughlin offered an elder of the village 400 dollars to repair the damage. "Hopefully, with the money, you can make pipes better, not just a quick fix, but permanently better, so the children can have a better life," the marine in full combat gear told Abbas Aswad, clad in a traditional Arab robe. Aswad thanked the American profusely, pointed to the nearby US marine position where the pipe was damaged, then to the rest of the village, where about 100 people eke out a living amid the desert dust, and said 400 dollars was not enough.

FALLUJAH (AFP) May 08, 2004
US-trained forces have been given a key role in maintaining the peace in Fallujah, but some of the US marines who fought in the powderkeg city do not trust their local allies. "I've heard rumors and stuff about them playing ball for the other team," said Lance Corporal Stephen Bennett, one of a few dozen marines entrenched at the Fallujah train station. His gun is pointed at the Jolan neighborhood, which until last week was the scene of heavy battles and which now is patrolled by members of the US-trained Iraqi Civil Defense Corps.) ICDC troops and the newly formed Fallujah Brigade have been given responsibility for security in Fallujah in a deal that ended weeks of fighting and let the marines lift an almost month-long siege of the Sunni Muslim city. The US-led coalition said Friday their numbers continued to rise, with 1,750 men from the Fallujah Brigade reporting for work the previous day, as well as some 1,100 ICDC and 750 police. Officers hail the deal as a step in the right direction, but some of the men eye the lightly armed Iraqis with mistrust.

Instances of Use of United States Forces Abroad, 1798 - 1993
by Ellen C. Collier, Specialist in U.S. Foreign Policy,
Foreign Affairs and National Defense Division
Washington DC: Congressional Research Service Library of Congress October 7, 1993 Summary
This report lists 234 instances in which the United States has used its armed forces abroad in situations of conflict or potential conflict or for other than normal peacetime purposes. It brings up to date a 1989 list that was compiled in part from various older lists and is intended primarily to provide a rough sketch survey of past U.S. military ventures abroad. A detailed description and analysis are not undertaken here.
The instances differ greatly in number of forces, purpose, extent of hostilities, and legal authorization. Five of the instances are declared wars: the War of 1812, the Mexican War of 1846, the Spanish American War of 1898, World War I declared in 1917, and World War II declared in 1941.

Marines give boot to suspects in horse shootings
A total of 34 horses were killed February 23, 1999

Web posted at: 12:53 a.m. EST (0553 GMT)
RENO, Nevada (CNN) Two men who face trial on charges of killing 34 wild horses in Nevada have been discharged by the Marine Corps, CNN learned Monday. Lance Cpls. Scott Brendle, 21, and Darien Brock, 20, were "administratively processed for separation for commission of a serious offense and received a discharge under other than honorable conditions," according to a statement from the commanding general of the first Marine division, officials told CNN. The officials said they were not sure when the discharge was first issued. The Marine Corps had pledged cooperation with investigators and denounced "this type of abhorrent behavior" in a statement last month. The Marine Corps action came as a surprise because the two have yet to be tried. Officials had said they would most likely be discharged from the Marines and lose all benefits if they were found guilty.

Perhaps no action in American military history has been so thoroughly documented, examined, and dissected as the Pearl Harbor attack. Investigation has followed investigation; a host of books have been written on the subject, all in an effort to pin down the responsibility in the welter of charge and countercharge. The issue of what individuals or set of circumstances, if any, should bear the blame for the success of the Japanese raid has not been, and may never be finally decided. On one point, however, there has been unanimous agreementthat the courage of the vast majority of defending troops was of a high order.
The first inkling of the Japanese attack came not from the air, but from the sea. At 0637 on 7 December, more than an hour before any enemy planes were sighted, an American patrol bomber and the destroyer [USS]

Many have asked why I have not indicated, eagle , globe and anchor, rather than just "GLOBE and ANCHOR," implying that I have erred. No error, it reads as I intended. Apparently unknown to most Marines of today, there was a time in the Corps when Marines referred to their emblem ( EMBLEM , not "ega"but that's yet another story) as simply the "Globe and Anchor," and there are still some old timers and writers around who use the term. There are many writings available, most of them older writings, but some more recent, where you will find this. One of the best examples of this, perhaps, may beand there are many morea quote in the recent book by Colonel Jon T. Hoffman, USMCR, Chesty . It reads as follows: "Colonel Robert D. Heinl, the premier historian of the Old Corps and a former subordinate of Puller, believed that Chesty was one of the greatest raconteurs that ever wore the Globe and Anchor."

They had just gone up to the door when two shotgun birdshot rounds were fired through the door, hitting the officers. One yelled `cover me!' to the marines, who then laid down a heavy base of fire. . . . The police officer had not meant `shoot' when he yelled `cover me' to the marines. [He] meant . . . point your weapons and be prepared to respond if necessary. However, the marines responded instantly in the precise way they had been trained, where `cover me' means provide me with cover using firepower . . . . over two hundred bullets [were] fired into that house."[1] O perations other than war (OOTW) present numerous challenges to leaders instilled with a doctrine principally designed for fighting Soviet-style armies during large-scale conventional wars.[2] Some of these missions (e.g., peacekeeping, peace enforcement, and nation assistance) pose doctrinal problems due to what has been described as "the American proclivity for satisfying political decisions by using conventional military forces to produce effects that are foreign to their nature."[3] In other instances, the term OOTW presents a doctrinal challenge because the domestic activities that were once among the Army's prominent missions, such as quelling riots or performing disaster relief, had been receiving short shrift in deference to warfighting. The notion that killing people and breaking things should be the US Army's sole concern is a relatively recent development; one need only note the role of the Army in putting down Shay's rebellion in 1786-87 as well as its many other noncombat operations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since it is unlikely that US policymakers will soon stop asking the military to perform tasks for which it is not presently designed, an understanding of the differences between war and operations other than war may help leaders primarily trained for high-intensity combat to adapt to the particular demands of other military operations.

OAS_AD('Top'); Marines Return Hostile Fire in Fallujah Friday, April 09, 2004 OAS_AD('Middle'); Muqtada al-Sadr search That news came as the U.S. military announced that one soldier and an Iraqi driver were killed Friday when insurgents hit a fuel convoy on the western edge of Baghdad. A second soldier was killed in an attack using roadside bombs and small arms at Camp Cook, a U.S. base in northern Baghdad, the military said. Senior sources at the Dept. of Defense confirmed that two U.S. soldiers and "several contractors" were listed as "unaccounted for" in today's fuel convoy attack west of Baghdad. The suspension of military offensive actions was initiated by U.S. forces to allow for talks between all parties and to allow the residents of Fallujah to bury the dead and tend to the injured. At least 450 Iraqis were killed and more than 1,000 wounded in fighting in the city of Fallujah this week, hospital officials said. The U.S. death toll across Iraq this week has reached 46. At least 643 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.
