U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II One way to understand the Second World War is to appreciate the critical role of merchant shipping... the availability or non-availability of merchant shipping determined what the Allies could or could not do militarily.... when sinkings of Allied merchant vessels exceeded production, when slow turnarounds, convoy delays, roundabout routing, and long voyages taxed transport severely, or when the cross-Channel invasion planned for 1942 had to be postponed for many months for reasons which included insufficient shipping.... Had these ships not been produced, the war would have been in all likelihood prolonged many months, if not years. Some argue the Allies would have lost as there would not have existed the means to carry the personnel, supplies, and equipment needed by the combined Allies to defeat the Axis powers. [It took 7 to 15 tons of supplies to support one soldier for one year.] The U.S. wartime merchant fleet constituted one of the most significant contributions made by any nation to the eventual winning of the Second World War In the final assessment, the huge US merchant fleet... provided critical logistical support to the war effort...

Kandahar isolated as opposition gears up
SUMMARY: Allied bombing Monday destroyed two bridges leading out of Kandahar, Afghanistan, further isolating the Taliban's last stronghold, as Afghan opposition forces and U.S. Marines prepared for a possible final assault on the southern city. Meanwhile in Germany, a revised draft agreement put forth by the United Nations for an interim post-Taliban government in Afghanistan was close to being finalized, sources said Monday. UPDATE: Kandahar has only one access and exit route, almost isolating it from the surrounding countryside, CNN has learned. Airstrikes pounded the Kandahar area Sunday night and Monday, mostly centered on the airport east of the city. ( Full story Maj. James "Bo" Higgins, an intelligence officer with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, said the military campaign for Kandahar had reached "a culmination point." Higgins said no decision had been taken to commit U.S. Marines to the coming battle for Kandahar, but Afghan opposition forces were moving toward Kandahar from the north and southeast. (

At 12:30 in the morning of May 10, approximately 20 U.S. Marines executed a military assault on the Port-au-Prince home of 69-year-old Annette Auguste, a.k.a. Souer Anne.  Auguste’s residence is part of a compound that includes four other apartments that were also invaded by the U.S. military forces.  The troops covered the heads of 11 Haitians with black hoods and then forced them to lay face down on the ground while binding their wrists with plastic manacles behind their backs. The victims of this terrifying U.S. military invasion included five-year-old Chamyr Samedi, 10-year-old Kerlande Philippe, 12-year-old Loubahida Augustine, 14-year-old Luckman Augustine, and seven adults. The Marines blew up a vehicle and a substantial part of Auguste’s three-story house, leaving behind c4 and c5 explosives paraphernalia including blasting caps and igniters. Not a single member of the Haitian National Police force (PNH) or the de facto Haitian government was present when the U.S. forces attacked the residence, said the arrestees.  All the detainees except Auguste were released after questioning.

Bush: 'We're smoking them out'
A landing craft carrying U.S. Marines exits the assault ship USS Peleliu Wednesday in the Arabian Sea. Military officials say the Marines took command of a secret airstrip in southern Afghanistan Monday. var clickExpire = "-1"; //> (CNN) President Bush said Monday U.S. forces were smoking out the people responsible for the September 11 attacks, and stressed Afghanistan "is just the beginning" in the war on terrorism. "I said a long time ago, one of our objectives is to smoke them out and get them running and bring them to justice," Bush said. "We're smoking them out. They're running. And now we're going to bring them to justice. I also said we'll use whatever means necessary to achieve that objective and that's exactly what we're going to do." Bush said the United States has entered a "dangerous period" in the war against terrorism and warned that Americans should expect some U.S. combat deaths.

Friday, April 30, 2004; Page A01 FALLUJAH, Iraq, April 29 U.S. Marines will withdraw from this violence-wracked city and hand over responsibility for pursuing insurgents to a new militia headed by former Iraqi army officers under a deal brokered by the top Marine general in Iraq, military officials here said Thursday. In Washington, senior Pentagon officials insisted a final agreement had not yet been reached, but Marine commanders here said they had received orders to prepare for a pullout that would begin Friday. In one of Baghdad's southern suburbs, meanwhile, eight U.S. soldiers were killed by a car bomb in one of the deadliest single attacks against American forces in weeks. The surprise agreement in Fallujah, which was authorized by Marine Lt. Gen. James T. Conway, is intended to give more responsibility to Iraqis for subduing the city while attempting defuse tensions by pulling Marines back from front-line positions. But some U.S. military and civilian officials privately expressed concern that Conway's strategy involves too hasty a retreat and relies too heavily on Iraqis whose combat skills and allegiances have not been fully examined.

Wednesday, April 7, 2004; Page A01 BAGHDAD, April 6 Sunni Muslim insurgents killed about a dozen U.S. Marines in heavy fighting Tuesday in the western city of Ramadi, a military spokesman said. Troops from the United States and several allied countries also came under fire from militiamen loyal to Moqtada Sadr, a militant Shiite Muslim cleric, in cities across southern Iraq. The clash in Ramadi, about 60 miles west of Baghdad, erupted Tuesday night when gunmen engaged Marines in the vicinity of the provincial governor's palace, according to a senior defense official in Washington. In addition to the Marines killed, about 20 were wounded and an M1-A1 Abrams tank and a Bradley Fighting Vehicle were hit and damaged, the official said. He added that the Marines inflicted "heavy casualties" on their attackers. In nearby Fallujah, meanwhile, Marine officers said that after two days and nights of fighting, they had established control over much of the city where four civilian contractors were killed last week and the bodies of two of them were mutilated. Marines reported taking fire from rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades as they entered the city.

Pentagon: al Qaeda regrouping in Afghanistan
U.S. Marines at the Kandahar International Airport carry 25mm ammunition. (CNN) Some members of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network may be regrouping in Afghanistan and forming smaller groups that could resurface later, a Pentagon spokesman said Wednesday. "We believe those dangerous groups are still in Afghanistan," Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem told a Pentagon news briefing. Stufflebeem said many other al Qaeda fighters, who were targeted by U.S. airstrikes and flushed from the mountainous Tora Bora region of eastern Afghanistan, probably fled into Pakistan. Anti-Taliban forces are trying to negotiate the surrender about 1,500 heavily armed Taliban fighters, who fled Kandahar before the city fell last month. The group has taken up positions about 120 miles northwest of Kandahar, near Baghran in Helmand Province. There are reports that the group may be sheltering Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar and possibly bin Laden, but Stufflebeem said there was no conclusive evidence that the men are together.

U.S. Marines likely to lead peacekeeping mission in Kosovo
February 12, 1999
Web posted at: 8:36 p.m. EST (0136 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. Marines may lead the way if the United States sends any ground troops on a peacekeeping mission into Kosovo, Pentagon sources said Friday. Kosovo is an embattled province of Serbia, the main Yugoslav republic. During the past year, more than 2,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands driven from their homes by clashes between the majority ethnic Albanians and Serbian security forces. Pentagon sources said current plans call for some 2,200 Marines, now on ships in the Mediterranean, to be dispatched to Kosovo. Those Marines would remain in place until more heavily armed Army troops could be brought in from Germany.

This is from the Washington Post, January 6, 2004: Marines To Offer New Tactics In Iraq
"We Are All Alone In Indian Country"
That was how we described it when we talked among ourselves in the 1960s. While not politically correct in the '90s, it summarized how 5,000 select CAC/CAP Marines and Navy Corpsmen felt as they stood for the first time in an isolated Vietnamese village, surrounded by jungle, terrifying booby-traps, and thousands of supposedly hostile Vietnamese civilians. They were part of the Marine Corps Combined Action Program (CAP). The CAP program placed a squad of Marines and one Navy Corpsman in villages from Chu Lai to the DMZ in South Vietnam from 1965 to 1971. Images of fanatical Viet Cong pouring out of the jungles and rice paddies hovered in the minds of each of us as we hunkered down for our first night of sleep in such hostile territory. That first night, each new Marine and Corpsman counted the friendly faces of as few as 7 Americans, then looked with mixed emotions at a poorly equipped platoon of Vietnamese Popular Forces, the local village "militia". Each Marine or Corpsman certainly pondered the distance to the nearest American military base. Each calculated how long it would take for help to arrive. Each knew that, when needed, help would probably not arrive in time.
