Scientific Profile
The department of Marine Enviromental Geology investigates the material composition and conditions in the ocean and on the seafloor as well as related geochemical and biological processes in the sediment. This area of research covers various aspects of marine science, including control processes in the marine sediment zone of the oceanic crust and parts of the ocean and atmosphere. Of particular interest are processes affecting thermal and mass transport between crustal components, including sediments, and the hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere. Here, the Holocene is the timescale of principal importance; however, other periods of the Earth's history that showed extreme environmental conditions or climates analogous to the present are also of interest.

126. NGDC/WDC MGG, Boulder-Marine Minerals Bibliography & Geochemical Database
A computerized bibliography and geochemical database on offshore marine mineral deposits. Primarily contains chemical analyses of presentday marine deposits of ferromanganese nodules and crusts (more than 140,000 analyses), but also includes some data for heavy minerals (approximately 1400 analyses). Analyses can be downloaded from the website or ordered on a CD.

From 1983 through 1992, the National Geophysical Data Center compiled a comprehensive, computerized bibliography and geochemical database on offshore marine mineral deposits as a cooperative effort with the Ocean Minerals and Energy Division of the National Ocean Service of NOAA, and the Office of International Activities and Marine Minerals (INTERMAR) of the Minerals Management Service. In 1991, the completed database and bibliography were released on CD-ROM. more about the marine minerals bibliography and database... More Marine Minerals Resources on the Web
