Marine geology in West Greenland fjords.
Introduction Marine Geology at GEUS includes both commercially funded offshore survey activities and scientific investigations of coastal and offshore areas, principally worldwide, but for obvious national reasons most focusing on Danish and Greenland territory with further activities concentrated in North Atlantic waters around the Faroe Islands. The main issues of study are the exploiration of seabed raw materials and mineral resources, the investigation of potential geohazards in deep-water areas of interest for offshore hydrocarbon exploitation, environmental quality, and more generally sedimentary processes relevant for various reasons (e.g. coastal defense) and subjects related to global climate change.
Issues and Goals The Marine Geology Group at the GEUS Department of Quaternary Geology deals with studies of the (Quaternary) geology of coastal and shelf areas as well as deep-ocean sedimentary systems. Basic scientific information is critical to understanding environmental changes in these areas. By using knowledge of the fundamental geologic processes that create and modify the seabed, geological models and prediction scenario's are made. The models and scenario's are used by scientists, political planners, and managers to assess and predict future change, such as the possible risk of slope instability in deep-water areas, coastal erosion, various effects of (abrupt) climate change and sea level rise, long-term impact of various contaminants, potential effects of seabed sand extraction and trawling activity as well as submarine fluid and gas seepage.

Geomorphic and Geologic Studies
Following the early onshore research dealing with the geomorphology of coastal land forms and process-oriented sedimentology, Coastal Studies Insititute researchers started investigating the marine extensions of coastal depositional systems, especially deltas and reefs. Driven largely by the availability of new technology such as side-scan sonar and high resolution seismic, CSI researchers developed a marine geology program that started with studies of the offshore Mississippi River delta and since has encompassed other domestic as well as foreign study sites. In additional , marine geology studies have expanded beyond the continental shelf to continental slope and deep basin floor evnironments. Notable studies conducted by CSI researches in the realm of marine geology include:

Purpose:
The past decade has seen tremendous growth in our data acquisition capability, with a wide range of data types collected at increasingly higher resolutions. With these advances in data acquisition come new problems in data synthesis and access. It is becoming increasingly difficult for individual investigators to synthesize and organize single data sets let alone manage them in a manner that allow data to be accessed efficiently by other investigators for other problems. National archiving of some marine geoscience data is carried out (e.g. underway geophysics, multibeam, core data). There have been several attempts by individual PI's to establish geographic- or data-specific databases. However, the access to many data types remains difficult and incomplete. Large quantities of data are under-utilized by primary users and access to these data can be virtually impossible for secondary users. Some of the questions addressed included:

    Methane trapped in marine sediments as a hydrate represents such an immense carbon reservoir that it must be considered a dominant factor in estimating unconventional energy resources; the role of methane as a 'greenhouse' gas also must be carefully assessed.

    Hydrates store immense amounts of methane, with major implications for energy resources and climate, but the natural controls on hydrates and their impacts on the environment are very poorly understood. Gas hydrates occur abundantly in nature, both in Arctic regions and in marine sediments. Gas hydrate is a crystalline solid consisting of gas molecules, usually methane, each surrounded by a cage of water molecules. It looks very much like water ice. Methane hydrate is stable in ocean floor sediments at water depths greater than 300 meters, and where it occurs, it is known to cement loose sediments in a surface layer several hundred meters thick. The worldwide amounts of carbon bound in gas hydrates is conservatively estimated to total twice the amount of carbon to be found in all known fossil fuels on Earth.

The Poor Knights and The Poor Squires ( The Pinnacles ) Geology Maori Habitation of the Poor Knights Islands According to reliable information obtained from old Maori living on the adjacent coast, the Poor Knights Islands were inhabited for many generations by a population of some three to four hundred Maori. They were self sufficient, cultivating arable land and supplementing their diet from abundant fish and shellfish life. The northern and larger of the two, named Tawhiti Rahi, was occupied by a sub tribe or Iwi called Ngatiwai, with Tuaho as their chief, while the Ngati Toki (a hapu of Ngatiwai) their chief Tabu, lived on the southern island which is called Aorangi. The chief Tatau was ruler over both islands. In calm weather Aorangi offered fairly easy landings in two places for canoes. Owing to the precipitous nature of the cliffs surroundings Tawhiti Rahi, the canoes of these islands would on approaching of bad weather be lifted by ropes from the sea. Pigs obtained from Captain Cook were bred and kept on Aorangi only, and were used principally as barter when dealing with the mainland tribes for totara timber. This was used largely by the islanders in the building of canoes. dwellings and fortifications. About the year 1808 a party of natives belonging to the Hikutu tribe from Hokianga paid a visit to Aorangi and requested to be supplied with pigs, but they were ordered off empty handed without being allowed to land. Soon after this incident it happened that Tatau and his warriors joined the notorious Hongi Hika on a fighting expedition to the Hauraki Gulf.
